Abstract:
Septic waste mismanagement in Zambia is a growing but largely overlooked public health and environmental concern. In rapidly urbanizing cities like Lusaka, Kitwe and Ndola, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, unsafe sludge disposal practices, and weak policy enforcement have turned septic systems into ticking time bombs. This article exposes the hidden dangers of Zambia’s failing septic waste systems: linking them to deadly disease outbreaks, water contamination, and environmental degradation. It calls for urgent multi-stakeholder action, including stronger regulations, investment in treatment infrastructure, community education, and support for local innovation, to avert disaster and ensure safe, resilient sanitation for all.
