🌟 WISE ZAMBIA STAFF SPOTLIGHT — CONCLUDING FEATURE
MEET MAGGIE INDOPU
Executive Director, WISE Zambia
FROM MARGINS TO POWER
As we conclude the WISE Zambia Staff Spotlight Series, we celebrate Maggie Indopu, the Executive Director providing strategic leadership to an organisation working at the intersection of hope, resilience and tangible change for rural women and young people across Western Province.
For Maggie, leadership is not simply about holding a position. It is about stewarding a vision, building a strong team and ensuring that every programme creates meaningful and sustainable opportunities.
“I have the privilege of leading an organisation that sits at the intersection of hope, resilience and tangible change for rural women and youth across Western Province.”
Leading WISE Zambia’s vision
As Executive Director, Maggie provides overall strategic leadership and guides the implementation of WISE Zambia’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, “From Margins to Power.”
Her responsibilities extend across the organisation’s four strategic pillars:
🔴 Education
🟡 Women’s Empowerment
🟢 Institutional Growth
⚫ Partnerships
She oversees programme design and implementation, resource mobilisation, stakeholder engagement, staff development, safeguarding, governance, financial accountability and transparent reporting.
Maggie also represents WISE Zambia on district and national coordination platforms, advocating for greater opportunities and stronger protection for rural women and young people.
Why she chose to serve
Maggie’s commitment is rooted in what she describes as the unfinished promise of rural Zambia.
Growing up, she witnessed how poverty, early marriage, gender inequality and limited access to education could silence the dreams of intelligent and capable girls and women.
“I saw potential extinguished simply because of geography and gender, and that injustice has never left me.”
She remains inspired by the courage of beneficiaries: the learner who walks several kilometres to attend school and the woman who saves a small amount each day through a Village Savings and Loan Association because she dreams of building a better future for her family.
For Maggie, WISE Zambia exists to turn that courage into opportunity and move women and young people from margins to power.
The transformation that inspires her
Maggie finds her greatest satisfaction in witnessing transformation as it happens.
It is present when a learner receives school fees and supplies and can remain in school. It is heard when a woman says, “For the first time, I have my own money, my own savings and my own voice in my household.”
It is also reflected in the trust of parents, community elders and traditional leaders who recognise WISE Zambia as an organisation that belongs to and works alongside their communities.
“Trust is our greatest currency.”
Maggie is especially proud of former beneficiaries who return as mentors, volunteers, advocates and contributors, helping the next generation of learners remain in school.
This cycle of giving demonstrates that investing in education does more than transform one life—it can create a continuing culture of opportunity and service.
Impact worth celebrating
WISE Zambia has supported approximately 1,400 young people and contributed to the graduation of 83 students from universities and colleges.
These graduates are becoming teachers, nurses, engineers, entrepreneurs and community leaders—strengthening Zambia’s human capital and contributing to the development of their communities.
Maggie also celebrates institutional milestones such as the procurement of STEAM laboratory equipment, the establishment of the Innovation Centre and the development of partnerships that expand WISE Zambia’s reach and sustainability.
“Every number represents a life touched, a dream nurtured and a future strengthened.”
The change she has witnessed
Through WISE Zambia’s work, Maggie has witnessed:
* Girls once at risk of early marriage complete secondary school and pursue tertiary education
* Women without reliable incomes become entrepreneurs and community leaders
* Traditional leaders become advocates for girls’ education and women’s empowerment
* Communities gain representation on district and national platforms
* Former beneficiaries return to support another generation
* WISE Zambia develop into a professional organisation trusted by communities, government institutions and development partners
She has also watched staff members grow in confidence, take ownership of their responsibilities and introduce innovative ideas.
“Empowering my team and seeing them grow is one of the most fulfilling parts of my leadership journey. Their growth is my growth.”
Her message to beneficiaries
“You are the reason we exist. Your courage, resilience and determination inspire us every day. Never give up on your dreams. Education is your power, and we are walking this journey with you.”
Her message to partners and supporters
“Thank you for trusting us and walking with us. Your investment in WISE Zambia is an investment in a more equitable and resilient Zambia.”
Together, WISE Zambia, its communities and partners are building a future in which every child, woman and young person—regardless of birthplace, gender or economic circumstances—has the opportunity to shape their own destiny.
“From Margins to Power is not merely a slogan. It is the calling I wake up to every day. Let us continue this work together with unwavering commitment and shared purpose.”
As our Staff Spotlight Series concludes, we also celebrate every member of the WISE Zambia team whose dedication turns the organisation’s vision into action.
👏 Join us in celebrating Maggie Indopu and the entire WISE Zambia team for their commitment to education, empowerment and lasting community transformation.
