Amos Youth Centre

Amos Youth Centre The Amos Youth Centre is a community-led, youth-driven organization.

Our vision is to be one of Zambia’s leading educational non-profit organizations that brings hope into the lives of youth that are in despair and adversity by supporting and guiding them to become a generation of empowered, educated and responsible citizens inspired to create change in their local communities, nation, and Africa broadly. In order to attain this mission, our goals include:
--Equal

access to quality education for vulnerable youth— To empower youths through direct sponsorship and educational activities provided at its facilities to broaden their learning process and ultimately enable them to realize their full potential.

--Narrowing economic and social gaps through mentorship and career guidance— To act as mentors and role models for vulnerable youth in the community to promote equality between the vulnerable and the rich, the orphans and the non-orphans, and the female and male students—thereby bridging the gap between different demographics in society. Additionally, mentoring and helping students choose the right careers through deliberate programs of academic support and counselling.

--Elimination of HIV/AIDS stigma and health disparity for HIV-positive students—To eliminate all aspects of stigma and discrimination that is associated with HIV/AIDS in target communities and provide HIV-positive members of Amos Youth Centre with additional support to ensure their health does not affect their ability to learn.

--Creation of transparency, accountability and sustainability, as a leading non-profit organization in Zambia and Africa—To build a trusted organization that raises the bar for all Zambian NGOs in terms of transparency and accountability, and builds trust from its donors, partners, stakeholders and the community in which it operates.

In our latest blog, we share the inspiring story of Kelvin Banda, an Amos Youth Centre alumnus who has spent more than a decade growing with the organisation.

Today, Kelvin serves as one of our Young Learners teachers, guiding students in Grades 5, 6, and 7 with the same dedication and encouragement that helped shape his own journey.

But his story goes far beyond the classroom. The blog reflects on the challenges that almost forced him to leave school and the role that mentorship, opportunity, and a supportive community played in helping him achieve his dreams.

Read Kelvin's story and discover how investing in a child can create a future leader who returns to uplift others.

Amos Youth Centre currently has 24 students attending our College Prep Program – young people who have graduated from secondary school and are continuing to receive mentorship, academic support, and life skills training as they prepare for their futures.

Today, we spotlight John, one of our high school graduates who is now giving back by teaching Mathematics, Chemistry, and Civic Education to grade 10 and 11 students.

John joined AYC in 2020 while in Grade 7 after being introduced to the centre by his sisters, who were also part of the program. Since then, he has grown into a passionate young leader with dreams of studying Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Through the College Prep Program, John has continued learning about budgeting, critical thinking, and personal development while also using his knowledge to support younger students at the centre.

Young people like John remind us that when students are supported consistently, they often return to uplift others in their community.

Every week, our high school graduates attend Youth Friendly Corner sessions at Kafue General Hospital, where they are guided by experienced health workers through important conversations about their health and future.

Through this partnership, young people have access to accurate sexual and reproductive health information, support services, and products in a safe and welcoming environment.

These sessions are helping our youth make informed decisions, ask questions freely, and gain the confidence they need to thrive as young adults.

At AYC, we believe that empowered young people are better prepared for life beyond the classroom.

Our weekly LitClub sessions continue to bring excitement to the students at the Amos Youth Centre.

The club currently brings together 70 students from our three learning sites, AYC’s Learning & Leadership Centre, the Read for Rose Special Education Program, and our outreach site at Soloboni Primary School.

These weekly sessions are facilitated by trained teachers who have also received literacy training from our peer organisation, ReachAll Organisation.

Students in the club have reported improvements in reading, spelling, writing, and confidence in the classroom. Through storytelling, reading circles, and interactive literacy activities, children are building foundational skills that will support them throughout their education journey.

Did you know that in Quarter 1 alone, Amos Youth Centre served 20,025 plates of food to children and youth at our Learning & Leadership Centre in Kafue? That averages to nearly 350 nutritious meals every single day.

Each plate includes a balanced combination of protein, vegetables, and starch to help ensure that our students are healthy, nourished, and ready to learn.

For many children, school meals are more than just food. They provide comfort, consistency, and the energy needed to focus in class and participate fully in learning.

At AYC, we understand that feeding a child is also part of educating a child.

Meet George, a 5th-year student at The University of Zambia -UNZA studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He is the first in his family to attain higher education.

George started coming to our Learning & Leadership Centre when he was in grade 5. He completed his secondary education thanks to AYC’s sponsorship program.

As we commemorate National Higher Education Day, we recognise the importance of encouraging students to pursue post- secondary education and raising awareness on making tuition more affordable and accessible to all. At AYC, we realise this importance, and that is why we have over 80 students pursuing tertiary education in the various colleges and universities around the country.

This World Environment Day, we are celebrating the young environmental stewards growing and learning at Amos Youth Centre. There are 45 students currently participating in sustainable gardening classes at our Urban Farming & Permaculture Learning Space, aka The Kia Garden.

The group includes 30 Young Learners and 15 secondary school students who are learning the basics of gardening, biofabrication, and soil health.

Beyond the classroom, many students have already started small backyard gardens at home, putting their lessons into practice and learning the importance of sustainability, nutrition, and environmental care.

World Environment Day reminds us that protecting the environment begins with education, action, and empowering young people with practical skills that can shape a more sustainable future.

Our Young Learners Program has grown this year to 477 children, including 289 girls and 188 boys!

Through access to trained teachers, interactive lessons, traditional games, and play-based learning, students are building strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, and confidence.

Today, we highlight Teacher Kelvin, one of our dedicated Young Learners teachers, as he teaches Integrated Science to our Grade 5 students.

Teachers like Kelvin continue to create safe, engaging, and supportive classrooms where children are encouraged to learn, ask questions, and grow into confident learners.

A total of 83 students, including those at our Read for Rose Special Education Program, are currently benefiting from digital learning through our partnership with Tablets For Kids, thanks to The African Education Program (AEP).

With access to tablets and Mwabu Education Zambia's impactful learning platform, students are able to strengthen their learning in interactive and engaging ways that build confidence and curiosity in the classroom.

Technology continues to play an important role in helping children access quality education, especially when paired with supportive teachers and safe learning spaces.

We are happy to share that 6 women from our 12th Cohort of the Women Business Training received small business grants to help them strengthen or launch their businesses.

This milestone has been made possible through our partnership with Rubis Energy Zambia, whose support is helping us continue training women entrepreneurs beginning with our 11th cohort.

These grants are more than financial support. They are an investment in confidence, resilience, and the ability for women to provide for their families and grow sustainable businesses within their communities.

From small grocery stands to food businesses and tailoring ventures, these women are putting their lessons in record keeping, budgeting, customer care, and business management into practice every day.

We are proud to walk this journey with them.
