AUGUST 9TH 2026.

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR A.

FIRST READING
“Stand upon the mount before the Lord.”

A reading from the first Book of Kings (1 KINGS 19: 9a, 11 - 13a)

In those days: When Elijah came to [Horeb the mount of God,] he lodged in a cave; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him. And he said, “Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

*The Word of the Lord.*

*RESPONSORIAL PSALM*
Taken from Psalm 85: 8ab and 9, 10 - 11, 12 - 13 (R.) 7

*R/. Let us see, O Lord, your mercy, and grant us your salvation.*

I will hear what the Lord God speaks;
he speaks of peace for his people and his faithful.
His salvation is near for those who fear him,
and his glory will dwell in our land. *R/.*

Merciful love and faithfulness have met;
justice and peace have kissed.
Faithfulness shall spring from the earth,
and justice look down from heaven. *R/.*

Also the Lord will bestow his bounty,
and our earth shall yield its increase.
Justice will march before him,
and guide his steps on the way. *R/.*

*SECOND READING*
“I would willingly be condemned if it would help my brother.”

*A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans (ROMANS 9: 1 — 5)*

Brethren: I am speaking the truth in Christ, I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.

*The Word of the Lord.*

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION*
Psalm 130: 5

*Alleluia.*
I long for you O Lord, my soul longs for his word.
*Alleluia.*

*GOSPEL*
“Bid me to come to you on the water. ”

*A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (MATTHEW 14: 22 - 33)*

[After the crowd was satisfied,] Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying, “Take heart, it is I; have no fear.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

TODAY’S MASS WAS A CALL TO STEADFAST FAITH, TRUST IN DIVINE JUSTICE, AND ACTIVE DISCIPLESHIP. THE CELEBRATION OF SAINT DOMINIC’S MEMORIAL REMINDED US OF THE POWER OF PREACHING AND PRAYER ROOTED IN FAITH.

*BY* _IMMACULATE COMMUNICATIONS DESK_

THE PROPHET HABAKKUK PRESENTS A LAMENT AND DIALOGUE WITH GOD CONCERNING INJUSTICE AND THE SUFFERING OF THE RIGHTEOUS.

DESPITE QUESTIONING WHY GOD PERMITS THE WICKED TO OPPRESS THE JUST, THE LORD RESPONDS WITH ASSURANCE: “WRITE THE VISION... IT WILL SURELY COME, IT WILL NOT DELAY.” THE READING CONCLUDES WITH THE CENTRAL MESSAGE: “THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL LIVE BY HIS FAITH.” THIS CALLS THE FAITHFUL TO TRUST IN GOD’S TIMING AND JUSTICE EVEN AMID TRIALS.

THE GOSPEL RECOUNTS THE HEALING OF AN EPILEPTIC BOY POSSESSED BY A DEMON.

AFTER THE DISCIPLES FAILED TO CAST OUT THE DEMON, JESUS DID SO INSTANTLY AND THEN TAUGHT THEM: “BECAUSE OF YOUR LITTLE FAITH... IF YOU HAVE FAITH AS A GRAIN OF MUSTARD SEED... NOTHING WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO YOU.” THE PASSAGE EMPHASIZES THE POWER OF EVEN SMALL, AUTHENTIC FAITH IN GOD.

IN HIS HOMILY, FR. MUTALE DREW CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE READINGS OF THE DAY:

*FAITH IN WAITING* : FROM HABAKKUK, HE URGED PARISHIONERS TO REMAIN FAITHFUL DURING SEASONS OF WAITING AND CONFUSION, TRUSTING THAT GOD’S VISION “HASTENS TO THE END AND WILL NOT LIE.”
*GOD’S JUSTICE FOR THE OPPRESSED* : FROM THE PSALM, FR. MUTALE REASSURED THE CONGREGATION THAT GOD SEES THE SUFFERING OF THE POOR AND WILL NOT FORSAKE THOSE WHO SEEK HIM.

*MUSTARD SEED FAITH:* FROM THE GOSPEL, HE CHALLENGED THE YOUTH AND ALL PARISHIONERS TO GROW THEIR FAITH. JUST AS SAINT DOMINIC FOUNDED THE ORDER OF PREACHERS OUT OF DEEP FAITH AND ZEAL, WE TOO ARE CALLED TO ACT BOLDLY, FOR “NOTHING WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE” WITH FAITH IN CHRIST.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 8TH 2026.

EIGHTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR II.

THE MEMORIAL OF SAINT DOMINIC DE GUZMAN, PRIEST.

FIRST READING
“The righteous shall live by his faith.”

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Habakkuk (HABAKKUK 1: 12 - 2: 4)

Are you not from everlasting, O Lord my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. O Lord, you have ordained them as a judgement; and you, O Rock, have established them for chastisement. You who are of purer eyes than to behold evil and cannot look on wrong, why do you look on faithless men, and be silent when the wicked swallows up the man more righteous than he? For you make men like the fish of the sea, like crawling things that have no ruler. He brings all of them up with a hook, he drags them out with his net, he gathers them in his seine; so he rejoices and exults. Therefore he sacrifices to his net and bums incense to his seine; for by them he lives in luxury, and his food is rich. Is he then to keep on emptying his net, and mercilessly slaying nations for ever? I will take my stand to watch, and station myself on the tower, and look forth to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint. And the Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain upon tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its time; it hastens to the end — it will not lie. If it seem slow, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Behold, he whose soul is not upright in him shall fail, but the righteous shall live by his faith.”

The Word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Taken from Psalm 9: 8 - 9, 10 - 11, 12 - 13 (R.) 11b

And the response is;
R/. You will not forsake those who seek you, O Lord.

The LORD sits enthroned forever;
he has set up his throne for judgement.
He will judge the world with justice;
he will govern the peoples with equity. R/.

For the oppressed, the LORD Will be a stronghold,
a stronghold in times of distress.
Those who know your name will trust you;
you will not forsake those who seek you, O Lord.R/.

Sing psalms to the Lord who dwells in Sion.
Tell his mighty works among the peoples,
for the Avenger of Blood has remembered them,
has not forgotten the cry of the poor. R/.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION.
2 Timothy 1: 10

Alleluia.
Our Saviour Christ Jesus abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel.
Alleluia.

GOSPEL
If you have faith, nothing will be impossible to you.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (MATTHEW 17: 14 - 20)

At that time: A man came up to Jesus and kneeling before him said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.” And Jesus answered, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.”
