CHILDREN RAISE THEIR VOICES FOR CLIMATE ACTION AT THE 2026 CHILDREN’S CLIMATE SUMMIT
Environment Africa Zambia (EAZ) supported 5 children and youths from Zimba and Livingstone Districts to participate in the Children’s Climate Council held on 5th May, 2026 and the 2026 Children’s Climate Summit on 6th May in Lusaka. The event was hosted by Care for Nature Zambia with support from Environment Africa under the theme, “Securing the future for every child through climate action.” The summit brought together more than 80 children from all provinces of Zambia, government officials, civil society organisations and climate action stakeholders to discuss climate change, environmental protection and child participation in environmental decision making processes.
A key highlight was a presentation from a youth working with EAZ Levy Muwana on “Integrating Climate Change in Child Rights Programming with a special focus on General Comment No 26,” which emphasized the need to protect children’s rights from climate change impacts. The event also saw the formation of the Children’s Climate Council Committee, with two children from the eco clubs working with EAZ under the Kindernothilfe-Germany (KNHG) and The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) funded project in Zimba District elected to the executive committee. Congratulations to Charity Hamaimbo and Jack Robert Yandisha for being elected into the committee. The summit empowered children to actively participate in climate governance and promote sustainable environmental solutions in Zambia.
Mr Herrick Mwewa, the Principal Climate Change Officer, officially opened the Children’s Climate Summit on behalf of the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment (MGEE) Permanent Secretary, Dr Douty Chibamba on 6th May, 2026. He highlighted the link between climate change and children’s rights and how this affects children. He also mentioned that the recent droughts experienced in the country showed the urgent need for stronger climate action and child-sensitive policies.
The Children’s Climate Summit successfully created a platform for children and youths to engage with stakeholders on climate issues affecting their rights and future. The event reinforced the importance of child participation in climate governance and promoted collaborative efforts toward sustainable environmental action in Zambia.
