FROM INMATE TO ENTREPRENEUR, SKILLS EMPOWERMENT CHANGES LIVES.

Roy Kazhila’s journey is proof that rehabilitation, skills development, and opportunity can transform lives.

After serving time in prison, Roy enrolled in the STEP-IN Programme implemented by the Prisoners’ Future Foundation (PFF) with support from Tools for Self Reliance. Through training in metal fabrication and welding, mentorship, psychosocial support, and reintegration assistance, Roy rebuilt his future.

Today, Roy runs a metal fabrication workshop in Munengo, Mumbwa District, creating window frames, gates, and doors while supporting himself with dignity and purpose.

His story reminds us that when people are given a second chance, transformation is possible.

“He almost lost his freedom… not because he was guilty, but because he had no money.

Vincent didn’t need more time in prison; he needed access to justice.

At one point, he gave up on his appeal. It seemed like the end of the road.

But sometimes, change begins with just one step… one legal document. And that changed everything.

Justice shouldn’t depend on your wallet but for many, it still does.

With your support, the Prisoners’ Future Foundation continues to restore hope, dignity, and access to justice impacting lives one case at a time.”

Prisoners’ Future Foundation Executive Director Engages Amnesty International Following Global Recognition

Prisoners’ Future Foundation (PFF) Executive Director, Mr. Geoffrey Mayamba, who was recently recognized as Zambia’s first Initiative Marianne Laureate, last week held a strategic meeting with Amnesty International.

The engagement focused on strengthening collaboration in advancing human rights, access to justice, and the protection of vulnerable populations, particularly persons in correctional facilities. The discussions also explored opportunities for partnerships in legal aid provision, advocacy, and promoting humane conditions of detention in Zambia.

Mr. Mayamba’s recognition under the Initiative Marianne underscores his commitment to justice sector reform and amplifies PFF’s role in championing the rights of marginalized communities.

His interaction with Amnesty International marks an important step toward building global alliances that support sustainable justice and human rights interventions in Zambia.

MOBILE COURT IN ACTION: JUSTICE DELIVERED AT MUKOBEKO MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON

Access to justice continues to take a progressive step forward through the use of Mobile Courts in Zambia with the support of the Embassy of Ireland, Zambia.

During a Mobile Court sitting held at the Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison Chapel in Kabwe, twenty (20) Ethiopian nationals were convicted for unlawful entry and stay in Zambia, contrary to the Immigration and Deportation laws.

The Mobile Court comprising a Magistrate Honourable Sebastian Mwenya, Public Prosecutor, Immigration Officers, Legal Aid Board and court support staff, was convened within the correctional facility to ensure timely access to justice for persons in custody. Proceedings were supported by interpretation services to guarantee that all accused persons fully understood the charges and court process, in line with fair trial standards.

The accused persons pleaded guilty and, in mitigation, expressed remorse while citing economic hardship as the reason for their migration. The court subsequently fined each individual K3,000 or, in default, sentenced them to two (2) months simple imprisonment.

This initiative highlights the critical role of Mobile Courts in:

o Reducing case backlog
o Enhancing access to justice
o Upholding fair trial rights
o Strengthening collaboration among justice institutions

The sitting also demonstrated strong coordination between the Judiciary, National Prosecution Authority, Department of Immigration, and the Zambia Correctional Service.

Following the judgment, deportation procedures are expected to be undertaken in accordance with the law.

Mobile Courts are not just about efficiency they are about bringing justice closer to the people.

PRISONERS’ FUTURE FOUNDATION CALLS FOR GREATER YOUTH JUSTICE REFORMS ON YOUTH DAY.

By Herman Machacha.

The Prisoners’ Future Foundation has called for increased support and justice reforms to help young people, especially those in correctional facilities, realise their full potential.

Prisoners’ Future Foundation (PFF) Communications and Resource Mobilisation Officer, Lilembalemba Muliyunda says young people across Zambia are not only future leaders but are already active drivers of change in society.

The organisation notes that many youths who come into conflict with the law face serious challenges, including delayed trials, limited access to legal representation, and reduced opportunities for education and rehabilitation.

It says such barriers often prevent young people from rebuilding their lives and contributing positively to society.

The Foundation says it remains committed to promoting access to justice through programmes such as the Mobile Court initiative, legal education, and reintegration support.

According to the organisation, these initiatives help ensure that justice is delivered in a timely manner while also giving young offenders a chance to rehabilitate and reintegrate into their communities.

The Foundation is further urging government institutions, civil society organisations, and community leaders to work together to create an environment where young people can access justice and opportunities for growth.

Meanwhile, the organisation says empowering young people requires practical investment in education, skills development, mentorship, and justice reforms that promote rehabilitation rather than exclusion.

The Prisoners’ Future Foundation says supporting youths both inside and outside correctional facilities helps strengthen families, communities, and the nation as a whole.

The organisation has since called on the nation to remember that every young person deserves a second chance and the opportunity to build a better future.

5th Edition of the Marianne Initiative

The Prisoners' Future Foundation (PFF) proudly acknowledges the 5th edition of the Marianne Initiative, bringing together 12 laureates and 12 powerful human rights causes from across the world.

This morning’s presentations which included the Presentation of PFF ED Mr. Geoffrey Mayamba highlighted the courage and resilience of these human rights defenders. Operating in often difficult and restrictive environments, their work is both inspiring and a powerful reminder of the urgent need for sustained global action.

At a time when human rights are increasingly under threat and those who defend them face growing risks, this initiative stands as a vital platform for solidarity, protection, and international cooperation.

As some of the laureates continue their training in Paris until July, and prepare to lend their voices at the upcoming Congress on the fight against the death penalty, PFF reaffirms its commitment to supporting such efforts. The fight against the death penalty remains central to our mission, and we stand in solidarity with all those advocating for justice, dignity, and the right to life.

We will continue to support these defenders beyond the training, especially in the field where their work is most critical and impactful.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the laureates for their unwavering commitment, and to all partners and institutions that make this initiative possible.
