Ciheb Zambia was honored to host Professor Christopher Welsh from the Division of Addiction Research & Treatment in the Department of Psychiatry at University of Maryland Baltimore. Professor Welsh is a renowned addiction psychiatrist with extensive experience in inpatient, outpatient, and telemedicine settings, supporting opioid addiction treatment, overdose prevention, and harm reduction initiatives.

Led by Ciheb Zambia CEO, Professor Lottie Hachaambwa, courtesy calls were made to the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary-Technical Services, Chainama Hills Hospital, and University Teaching Hospital to strengthen collaboration in addressing substance use disorders in Zambia. Through the partnership between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Ciheb Zambia and the University of Maryland Baltimore, the Ministry of Health was supported to establish Zambia’s first Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) clinic at UTH, a major milestone in expanding access to evidence-based addiction treatment services in the country.

As part of this continued collaboration, Ciheb Zambia and UMB are implementing the Integrated Services using Person-centered Interactions, Reach, and Engagement (INSPIRE) study, an implementation science research funded by the National Institutes of Health. The study is focused on assessing substance use behaviors, HIV risk, stigma, and healthcare utilization among people who use drugs and exploring factors influencing early MOUD implementation; and co-adapting an HIV status-neutral Collaborative Care Management Model with stakeholders.

The study will also establish a Community of Practice through the ECHO platform to strengthen the capacity of Zambian healthcare workers in addiction prevention, treatment, and management advancing Zambia’s commitment to improving mental health and substance use disorder services.

Ciheb Zambia recently attended a stakeholder breakfast meeting hosted by the Drug Enforcement Commission to help mobilize funds for the upcoming National Drug Rehabilitation and Skills Development Center.

With support from The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the CDC, we are partnering with the Ministry of Health Zambia to establish Zambia’s first Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) clinic at the University Teaching Hospital.

This clinic will offer opioid agonist therapy, psychosocial support, HIV/TB screening, and harm reduction services, a major step forward in addressing substance use disorders in Zambia.
