The Kamutamba AFD project works under the umbrella of Academics for Development*, with the aim of helping the St. Theresa's Mission Hospital, in Zambia. The hospital is an essential health institution for over 210.000 patients from the impoverished rural area of northern Zambia. Our group is currently contributing to the Kamutamba project, started by a Belgium couple in order to assist in making S
aint-Theresa Hospital self sustaining after the passing of national legislation making health care free to the Zambian citizens. This has placed the burden of all financial responsibility on the hospitals, with insufficient funds coming from the national government. Kamutamba has already created a restaurant, store, and a guesthouse, for which the profits go to the hospital’s day-to-day costs. Even with these income generating activities the hospital is running a deficit, threatening to leave hundreds of thousands of Zambians without healthcare. We intend to create an electronic bookkeeping system for these projects successful integration and continuation, in hopes of the hospital being able to use this system in more of their activities. This would further cut costs for the hospital’s activities, as well as improve functionality and efficiency. Our team will also stay 6 weeks in Zambia, in order to conduct research on possible business opportunities the hospital can take in the upcoming years.
