They were likely a mating pair and you disturbed them.
During mating season, it is possible to find snakes together like that.

Most of the times they see us first and quickly get away unnoticed or try to hide.
If snakes were after us, we would have been overwhelmed with snakebites.

Many people think that snakes will go out of their way to sneak up on us and bite us.
This is not truth.
Snakes will do almost anything to avoid us.

It is a Black Necked Spitting Cobra
Highly Venomous
seems to have just swallowed a Lizard.

Discourage your workers/caretakers from attacking snakes.
call snake handlers.

Yes, this a brown house snake
It is harmless
No problem with them roaming around your yard
tell the kids to report any sightings to adults and not attempt to do anything lest they make a mistake and it turns out to be a different snake.
