Why Parents Hide Their Children with Disabilities
This is a troubling reality that continues to worry me deeply. I sought to understand why some parents hide their children with disabilities, and after careful reflection, engagement with families, and community observations, I have identified several reasons that contribute to this practice.
While these reasons do not justify the act, understanding them is crucial if we are to address stigma, promote inclusion, and protect the rights and dignity of children with disabilities.
Some of the key reasons include:
1. Fear of Stigma and Discrimination
Many parents fear societal judgment, ridicule, or rejection directed at both the child and the family.
2. Cultural and Religious Beliefs
In some communities, disability is wrongly linked to curses, punishment, or spiritual attacks, leading parents to hide the child out of shame or fear.
3. Lack of Awareness and Education
Some parents lack accurate information about disability, early intervention, and the abilities and potential of children with disabilities.
4. Emotional Trauma and Denial
The shock of a disability diagnosis can push parents into denial, making it difficult for them to publicly accept their child.
5. Economic Hardship
Poverty and the cost of healthcare, education, and assistive devices make some parents feel overwhelmed and helpless.
6. Inaccessible Services and Infrastructure
When schools, healthcare facilities, and public spaces are not inclusive, parents feel there is “no place” for their child.
7. Fear for the Child’s Safety
Parents worry about bullying, abuse, or neglect, especially when social protection systems are weak.
8. Negative Family or Community Pressure
Extended family members or community leaders may pressure parents to keep the child out of sight.
But the truth remains:
Hiding a child with a disability denies them their rights, limits their opportunities, and reinforces harmful stereotypes.
