Happy International Seed Day! Today we celebrate the foundation of our food, our culture, and our future. But in Zambia, that future is under threat.

Two proposed bills aim to replace our current seed laws with UPOV 91 – a system that criminalises farmers, legalises biopiracy and hands control to a handful of corporations.

As we commemorate World Water Day 2026 under the theme “Water and Gender,” we are reminded that equitable access to water, sanitation, and hygiene is deeply connected to gender equality, dignity, and inclusive development. Women and girls continue to face the greatest challenges in accessing safe water, yet they remain key agents of change in building sustainable solutions.

Starting this year, Chitambo Development Foundation- CHDF will strengthen, continue, and expand its work in the WASH space by actively seeking and collaborating with more partners to scale impactful interventions. Our focus remains on promoting inclusive and community-driven WASH systems, advancing hygiene behaviour change, and building climate-resilient solutions that respond to the needs of vulnerable populations. Through these efforts, we aim to ensure that women, men, and young people are meaningfully engaged in shaping solutions that improve health outcomes, livelihoods, and overall well-being.

Water is not just a resource; it is a foundation for opportunity, resilience, and equality. As we move forward, we reaffirm our commitment to working with partners to drive sustainable change and ensure no one is left behind.

Today, 21 March, we join the world in commemorating the International Day of Forests under this year’s theme, “Forests and Economies: New Solutions for a Better World.”

At Chitambo Development Foundation- CHDF , we recognize that forests are central to livelihoods, climate resilience, and sustainable economic development, particularly for rural communities in Chitambo. However, our forests are increasingly under threat from deforestation driven by charcoal production, unsustainable agricultural expansion, and illegal logging, challenges that continue to degrade ecosystems and weaken community resilience.

CHDF remains committed to addressing these challenges by promoting sustainable forest management, strengthening community awareness on conservation and responsible land use, supporting reforestation and tree planting initiatives, and advancing climate-smart agriculture and agroforestry practices. At the same time, we are working to encourage alternative livelihoods that reduce dependence on forest resources while empowering communities to actively participate in environmental governance.

We believe that safeguarding our forests is not only an environmental responsibility but also a pathway to building resilient local economies and a better future for all.

Today, as Zambia commemorates National Youth Day under the theme “Arise and Soar,” the Chitambo Development Foundation- CHDF celebrates the energy, innovation, and leadership potential of young people who are shaping the future of our communities.

At CHDF, our programmes recognize the critical role of youth in driving sustainable development. That is why women and youth collectively account for 60% of our targeted beneficiaries across our interventions.

Starting in 2026, CHDF has many youth-focused programmes lined up in the areas of education, health, agriculture, environment and natural resource management, livelihoods, and economic empowerment. These initiatives aim to equip young people with the skills, opportunities, and support needed to thrive and contribute meaningfully to community development.

To the youth of Zambia: Arise, dream big, and soar to greater heights. The future belongs to you.
