IT IS HIGH TIME GOVERNMENT CONSIDERED DOING A TOTAL OVERHAUL ON GREAT EAST ROAD

The Kum'mawa Development Coalition, also known as UMODZI KUM'MAWA, is disturbed by the recent cut-off of Lusaka from the eastern parts of Zambia due to heavy rains. Two culverts at Kankumba and Chansanje along the Great East Road in Rufunsa District have been washed away. This incident highlights the ongoing danger posed by this road to its users, as it is not the first time such a situation has occurred.

The Great East Road has become a serious risk to those who travel on it. Many bridges along this route have lost their strength, and lives are now at stake. The road has not received the necessary upkeep, making it increasingly unsafe for transportation.

We strongly appeal to the government to take immediate action and repair the entire stretch between Lusaka and Luangwa Bridge. A full assessment and reconstruction are essential to ensure that this route can safely support the movement of people and goods without interruption.

Furthermore, we urge Government to expand its roadwork initiatives to include other critical roads in the province, such as those leading to Chipata, Lundazi, and Chama. Upgrading these routes is crucial for the safety and development of the region, ensuring better connectivity and protecting lives.

URGENT CALL FOR THE WITHDRAWAL OF BILL 7 AS IT IS A THREAT TO DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES AND LOCAL GOVERNANCE

The KUM'MAWA DEVELOPMENT COALITION, known as UMODZI KUM'MAWA, stands in solidarity with His Royal Highness, Paramount Chief Mpezeni, in voicing our grave concerns regarding the recent Constitution Amendments under Bill 7. We echo his sentiments that the lack of consultation with traditional leaders and vital stakeholders undermines not only the integrity of the legislative process but also the fundamental rights of the Zambian people.

These amendments threaten to erode the democratic values we hold dear, silencing the voices of communities who should actively participate in shaping the laws that govern them.

In light of overwhelming opposition from various sectors of society including the Church, the Non-Governmental Organizations Coordinating Council (NGOCC), Civil Society Organizations, the Law Association of Zambia, and the general populace, we call on the government to immediately recall or withdraw Bill 7.

The Zambian people have made it abundantly clear that they reject these proposed amendments, primarily due to the glaring absence of transparency and meaningful consultation processes. Our democratic framework thrives only when all stakeholders, especially those at the grassroots level, are actively engaged in such significant decisions.

Moreover, passing this bill without comprehensive consultations poses serious risks to our governance structure. It can lead to the marginalization of traditional leaders and local voices, ultimately destabilizing the fabric of our communities.

Additionally, such actions could result in a disconnect between the government and the people, fostering an environment ripe for discontent and resistance. The consequences may include undermining the already fragile trust in public institutions, thus exacerbating social and political tensions within our nation.

We implore the government to prioritize dialogue and inclusiveness over hurried legislation. The future of our democracy hangs in the balance, and it is imperative that we listen to the collective wisdom of our people.

As UMODZI KUM'MAWA, we remain committed to advocating for a transparent and participatory approach to governance, ensuring that all Zambians can have a say in shaping their own future.

KUM'MAWA DEVELOPMENT COALITION (UMODZI KUM'MAWA)'S RESPONSE TO HON. CORNELIUS MWEETWA'S COMMENTS ON PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU'S CANDIDACY

KUM'MAWA DEVELOPMENT COALITION, also recognized as UMODZI KUM'MAWA, is compelled to respond to the unwarranted remarks made by Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa regarding the formation and launch of TONSE ALLIANCE, as well as the unveiling of President Edgar Lungu as our Presidential candidate. As Government Spokesman, Mr. Mweetwa carries the responsibility of providing Zambians with transparency and accountability regarding the actions and promises of the UPND regime and its leader, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, since assuming office.

It is imperative that Mr. Mweetwa directly addresses the substantive promises made by his government, particularly the much publicized K50 per 25 kg bag of mealie meal and K13 per litre of fuel among other many empty promises. These commitments were made to the Zambian people, yet we, like many citizens, are still waiting for tangible results. His silence on these issues raises questions about the government’s priorities and actions toward the welfare of the Zambian populace.

Mr. Mweetwa must recognize that the TONSE ALLIANCE where we are a member is an electoral pact just like the ruling UPND alliance and operates based on rules of engagement as set by its constitution as the guiding framework. Just like most Zambians cannot question the candidature of president HH under the UPND alliance for 2026, KDC is expecting Mr Mweetwa as Chief government spokesman to stay away from dedicating their precious time and waste tax payers money to drive all the way to ZNBC studios only to go and discuss the Tonse Alliance 2026 Presidential. This approach is unfair to Zambian tax payers, our voters and indeed our constitutional democracy.

As a pressure group that stand to defend the rights and interests of Easterners regardless of their tribe, gender, age, political affiliation and religion, we find Mr. Mweetwa and the UPND’s non stop political criticism, malicious attacks and structured verbal harassments against former President, Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu both unnecessary, offensive and unacceptable.

It is perplexing for the chief government spokesperson to point all blame fingers at President Lungu for all the failed promises of the UPND government after being in power for close to four years now. Is president Lungu still in state house since August 2021? Why is Mr. Mweetwa failing to account what president HH has done and achieved before Zambians since taking over from president Lungu? To us, we believe this is what most people want to hear!

In conclusion, we appeal to the UPND government to allow President Lungu enjoy his democratic rights and fundamental freedoms as a Zambian citizen like any person. We as KDC, we oppose and condemn the UPND idea and practice of consistently attacking, harassing and insulting president Lungu every time he takes a political step or issues a statement. As an Easterner as well as the 2026 Presidential Candidate of the Tonse Alliance, we want the government to know that we shall religiously defend and stand with President Lungu.

URGENT CALL FOR THE UPHOLDING OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE RULE OF LAW IN ZAMBIA

The KUM'MAWA DEVELOPMENT COALITION, also known as UMODZI KUM'MAWA, expresses deep discontent regarding the ongoing failure of the UPND regime, under the leadership of Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, to uphold the rule of law, a principle they championed both before and after assuming office. Six decades into Zambia's independence, it is disheartening to witness that the fundamental rights of our citizens remain unprotected and neglected.

Mr. Hichilema’s repeated claims about the importance of the rule of law ring hollow when set against the backdrop of increasing repression faced by Zambians, particularly those from the Eastern Province.

Our coalition is particularly troubled by the continued harassment of individuals from Eastern Province, characterized by unwarranted long detentions and the denial of police bonds. The constitutional rights of our citizens appear to be disregarded, as exemplified by the cases of notable individuals like Mr. Thomas Allan Zgambo, a prominent journalist, and Mrs. Wanziya Chirwa Kampyongo, both of whom hail from Eastern Province. Their experiences reflect a broader pattern of injustice where citizens are treated as if they do not have rights to fair legal processes, casting a shadow over the rule of law in our nation.

Furthermore, the denial of bail to those appealing their sentences highlights a glaring breach of constitutional rights. Such actions not only undermine justice but also contribute to a culture of fear and intimidation within our society. As UMODZI KUM'MAWA, we are deeply saddened by these developments and are compelled to raise pressing questions about the current state of affairs. Is it now considered wrong to belong to Eastern Province? How can we, as citizens, stand by while our fellow countrymen face systemic discrimination and legal injustices?

We stand united in our demand for accountability and urge the UPND government to reaffirm its commitment to the rule of law by ensuring the protection of all citizens' rights, regardless of their region or background. Effective governance requires adherence to democratic principles, including the upholding of human rights. We call for immediate action to rectify these injustices and restore faith in our legal system, for the sake of our nation.

DECISIVE STEP AHEAD, UMODZI KUM'MAWA JOINS TONSE ALLIANCE FOR NATIONAL INCLUSION AND PROGRESS OF EASTERNERS

In a monumental move rooted in unwavering dedication to advancing and promoting the welfare of Easterners in particular and Zambians in general, KUM'MAWA Development Coalition (KDC) also known as UMODZI KUM'MAWA, has today formally decided to join and align with “Tonse alliance”.

As KDC, we endorse and embrace the values and mission objectives of Tonse Alliance as they are unifying, inclusive, pro Zambian, transcends political party boundaries and foster collective interests of all Zambians including Easterners. We firmly believe that our people centred synergy and collaboration with the Tonse alliance will amplify our efforts to secure a brighter and equitable future for Easterners in particular and Zambians in general.

Through this strategic alliance, UMODZI KUM'MAWA reaffirms its dedication to shaping a future where the needs of our constituents transcend political affiliations, prioritizing the greater good above all else. Our mission aligns seamlessly with the Tonse alliance's ethos, ensuring that Easterners and Zambians at large receive their rightful share from our natural resources, public wealth and national prosperity.

UMODZI KUM'MAWA CONDEMNS UPND'S 3-YEAR RULE AND URGES CHANGE GOING FORWARD

The Kum'awa Development Coalition, representing the inhabitants of Eastern Province under Umodzi Kum'mawa, wishes to congratulate the UPND for their three-year tenure and wishes them success in their final two years in office. However, KDC would like to express disappointment with President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND government for failing to rule under the National Framework of “One Zambia, One Nation”.

In this three years, the coalition has come to conclude that the New Dawn Government has made regionalism and tribalism more visible by continuously harassing, persecuting and arresting some known Easterners such Dr. Chris Zumani Zimba, Mr. Andrew Kamanga, Mrs. Esther Lungu, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Hon. Emmanuel Jay Banda, Hon Munir Zulu, Mr. Kaizer Zulu and others. This makes the coalition feel that, under this government, Easterners are on the top most wanted or targeted list!

We are also want to register our concerns which stem from allegations of rampant corruption, irregularities in the FIC report, and the shrinking democratic space under the UPND administration. Notably, opposition parties are denied the right to hold rallies, as exemplified by the incidents involving The Socialist Party and the Citizen First Party regards the Samfya Rally. The rising trend of unwarranted arrests of dissenters further highlights the diminishing democratic values in Zambia.

The stifling of democracy and increased political tensions have resulted in a challenging environment for opposition leaders and individuals expressing alternative viewpoints. Acknowledging the admission by Mr. Cornelius Mweetwa regarding sponsoring confusion to weaken the Patriotic Front, we call for a transformation in Zambian politics to restore faith in governance in the last remaining two years of UPND.

In the spirit of One Zambia, One Nation, the people of Eastern Province and all Zambians yearn for a change that prioritizes transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in the political landscape. Zambia is for all Zambians, pride and free people including Easterners!

KUM'MAWA DEVELOPMENT COALITION (UMODZI KUM'MAWA) CONDEMNS POLITICAL WITCH-HUNT AND PERSECUTION OF EASTERNERS IN THE NAME OF ECL AND ESTHER LUNGU

July 31, 2024

The KUM'MAWA DEVELOPMENT COALITION, also known as UMODZI KUM'MAWA, vehemently denounces the current wave of political witch-hunt and persecution aimed at Easterners under the guise of targeting ECL and Esther Lungu. This biased focus is unwarranted, unjust, and threatens the unity and integrity of our nation. We stand firm in advocating for fairness and justice for all, regardless of their background or affiliation.

We call upon the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) to redirect its investigative efforts towards probing into the activities of UPND top officials who are amassing wealth through questionable means. It is imperative that DEC prioritizes investigating the sudden proliferation of lodges, apartments, and commercial farms across the country, allegedly linked to these top Government officials among them Ministers as reported by the ACC. The focus should be on rooting out corruption and illicit practices that undermine the economic well-being of our nation.

The financial transparency and integrity of public officials must be upheld without bias or favoritism. Instead of needlessly targeting individuals whose financial capacity is unquestionable like the former Head of State and his family, DEC should focus on unearthing potential money laundering schemes and illicit activities as unveiled in the Financial Intelligence Center (FIC) report. UMODZI KUM'MAWA urges DEC to act swiftly and diligently in pursuing those involved in corrupt practices and safeguarding the interests of the Zambian people.

UMODZI KUM'MAWA reiterates its commitment to fostering a just and equitable society where the rule of law prevails. We urge DEC to uphold its mandate in a fair and unbiased manner, focusing on eradicating corruption and malpractice wherever they may be found. Together, let us strive towards a Zambia where transparency, accountability, and integrity reign supreme for the betterment of all citizens.

UMODZI KUM'MAWA DEMANDS TRUTH AND CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION OF PERMANENT SECRETARY KAWANA AND MATEMBO.

The actions unfolding in the wake of the leaked audios involving Hon Emmanuel Jay Banda have left the Kum'mawa Development Coalition, also known as Umodzi Kum'mawa, appalled and deeply troubled. The voices of Mr. Kawana and Mr. Matembo, attempting to coerce Hon Banda into altering his account of abductors are not just alarming but indicative of a systemic rot within the state. We also take note of the further conversations between Hon Banda and Minister of Health, Hon Sylvia Masebo in which Hon Banda underscores his position on his claims on two of his named abductors from State House.

It is imperative that President Hakainde Hichilema recognizes the severity of these exchanges and acts swiftly to address this grievous breach of trust. The actions of the two Permanent Secretaries constitute maneuvers to knowingly albeit a criminal act, which is in conflict with the law.

As the echoes of manipulation reverberate, our voices merge with those of concerned stakeholders, such as the Catholic Church represented by Caritas Zambia, in demanding accountability and transparency. Why does the state persist in pressuring Hon Banda to recant his statements in exchange for liberty? Are the authorities conceding to the implicit acknowledgment of involvement with the alleged abductors? Is Hon Jay Banda being unjustly detained to silence his truth?

The onus now lies squarely with the state to delve into its conscience and uphold justice in the matter concerning Hon Jay Banda. The revelation of high-ranking government officials seeking to barter freedom for altering a narrative throws a sinister shadow on the principles of integrity and fairness. It is paramount that a thorough investigation is conducted, and those implicated, such as Kawana and Matembo step down immediately to serve as key witnesses in revealing the hidden agendas and shedding light on their motivations.

We further reiterate our further call to the President to lay off his two Special Assistants in view of this continuously increasing revelations pointing to the involvement of Levy Ngoma and Clayson Hamasaka in this unfortunate incident in the history of our country.

Umodzi Kum'mawa reiterates its unwavering stance in advocating for truth and justice. The time for reckoning is now. The state's integrity is at stake, and any delay in addressing these grave transgressions only deepens the credibility crisis at hand. It is not just about Hon Jay Banda's freedom but the fundamental values of integrity, accountability, and transparency that must prevail in the halls of power. Let the echoes of truth resound, and may justice be swift and unwavering in the face of such egregious misconduct.
