It is easy to think of a wheelchair follow-up as purely a mechanical process. When we fix the nuts and bolts of the wheelchair, we can forget about the child who sits on that wheelchair. When we adjust the size of the wheelchair, it is easy to overlook the smile of the child which intersects with your gaze as you look up at them. Follow-ups are more than just the mechanised process of making sure a wheelchair is in working condition; it’s about so much more than that. It’s about the humanity of the person whose wheelchair we are following up. The humanity and connection of the child who laughs while playing with the volunteer. This is what we want to remember today: the shared moment of connection that thrives in between the mechanised processes of that which we call the follow-up.
È facile considerare il controllo periodico della sedia a rotelle un processo puramente meccanico. Mentre sistemiamo bulloni e viti, rischiamo di dimenticarci del bambino che su quella sedia è seduto. Quando ne regoliamo le dimensioni, è facile non cogliere il sorriso del bambino che incrocia il nostro sguardo mentre lo osserviamo. I controlli non si limitano alla mera procedura meccanica di verifica della funzionalità del mezzo; rappresentano molto di più. Riguardano l'umanità della persona a cui la sedia è destinata: l'umanità e il legame con quel bambino che ride mentre gioca con il volontario. È proprio questo che vogliamo ricordare oggi: quel momento di condivisione e connessione che nasce e vive nel cuore stesso delle procedure meccaniche che chiamiamo "controllo".
