While participating in a restoration practitioners networking event held at Grootvadersbosch (GVB) Conservancy during February 2025. We had the privilege of joining GVB restoration project manager on a evening walk through the Afromontane forest to visit the redwood trees introduced as a source of timber in the 1920's.

Redwoods are native to California and Oregon in the USA and were first introduced to South in 1885. The stand in GVB Conservancy are recognised as Champion Trees due to their size and historical value.

It’s been a while since we last posted here — but we haven’t been idle. Over the past year, SunSeed has been working on various conservation projects, from exploring threatened habitats to supporting biodiversity restoration initiatives and knowledge-sharing on the West Coast.

Here are a few shots from the botanical walk at Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Area outside of Porterville with the Weskus branch of the Botanical Society of South Africa, in search of the summer flowering Disa uniflora (Pride of Table Mountain).

Walking through a sea of Ericas and cooling of in mountain streams made the day so much more memorable.
