Hats on for Children's Palliative Care! ❤️

Today, our team at St Joseph's has put on their hats for a cause close to our hearts!

As part of the campaign, we're raising awareness of children's palliative care and recognising the importance of comfort, dignity and compassionate support for children and their families.

Behind every colourful hat is a meaningful message: children's palliative care is about helping children live as well as possible, while supporting their families throughout their journey.

A big thank you to our wonderful staff for getting involved and helping shine a light on this important cause.

Different hats, one shared purpose - caring for children and families.

Some people remember our history. Stanley lived it ❤️

Meet Stanley - a living legacy of St Joseph’s.

He came to St Joseph’s as a baby, a patient who grew up in our care, experienced the move from Philippi to Montana - and more than six decades later, he is still part of our story.

Stanley’s journey is a beautiful reminder that our heritage lives through the people who carry it with them.

What a morning! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️❤️

Yesterday, our community came together for a morning of movement, connection and support for St Joseph’s Children’s Hospital.

Despite the Cape Town wind making sure everyone worked a little harder, we had an incredible turnout, with participants taking on both the 5km and 10km routes.

And after crossing the finish line, there was no better way to recover than with a well-earned coffee and some delicious treats from Norfolk Deli.

To every runner, walker, supporter and person who helped make the morning possible - thank you. Your enthusiasm, generosity and support made the day incredibly special.

A special thank you to the African Research Society for organising the event, and to everyone who contributed behind the scenes to bringing it all together.

We are incredibly grateful to have a community that continues to show up for the children and families of St Joseph’s 💙

Thank you for running with us and supporting their journey of recovery.

A heritage built on courage, compassion and care ❤️

As we reflect on our heritage this month, Adrian van Stolk, Chairperson of the St Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Board, takes us back to the values that have shaped our story for more than 90 years.

In 1935, five Pallottine Missionary Sisters began a mission of care in Philippi. Their beginnings were humble, but their commitment was unwavering: to care for children who needed them, with compassion, dignity and love.

Their journey would span generations, changing times and even a move from Philippi to Montana. Yet through it all, the heart of the mission remained.

For Adrian, this legacy is a reminder that our heritage is about more than the buildings we have occupied or the milestones we have reached. It lives in the values passed from one generation to the next - and in the people who continue to carry them forward today.

“Love and care ultimately outlast prejudice and division.”
— Adrian van Stolk, Chairperson of the Board

More than 90 years later, that mission continues.

A heritage of care. A legacy that lives on.

The women who started it all ❤️

In 1935, five Pallottine Missionary Sisters from Germany began a mission of care in Philippi that would eventually become St Joseph’s Children’s Hospital.

The beginnings were humble, but their commitment to caring for vulnerable and seriously ill children laid the foundation for something that would continue long beyond those early years.

And they were only the beginning.

Across the decades, generations of Sisters, nurses and caregivers have carried that mission forward - each leaving their own mark on the story of St Joseph’s.

Today, more than 90 years later, that legacy continues through the people who care for the children and families who come through our doors.

From one generation to the next, the care continues ❤️

Here’s how giving works at St Joseph’s, plainly ❤️

A child stays with us for around 112 days.

That’s 16 weeks of meals, therapy, medical supplies, schoolwork - and someone there to care for them, even at two in the morning.

A once-off gift helps, and we are grateful for every one.

But monthly giving reflects the way recovery actually happens here: steadily, consistently and for as long as it takes.

👉 R100 a month can cover a week of meals for a child, every month.

👉 R1,000 a month can cover medical supplies for a child, every month.

Your monthly gift becomes part of a child’s recovery journey - from the care they receive today to the day they’re ready to return home.

If today feels like the moment, become a monthly donor through the link in our bio.

South African donors receive a Section 18A tax certificate.

From Philippi to Montana - a new home for a growing mission ❤️

St Joseph’s story began in Philippi in 1935, where a vacant presbytery became a place of care for children affected by tuberculosis and other serious illnesses.

Over the decades that followed, St Joseph’s grew - but its journey would also be shaped by South Africa’s history.

Under the Group Areas Act, St Joseph’s was forced to leave its home in Philippi and relocate.

In 1967, a new St Joseph’s opened its doors in Montana, with space for approximately 145 children and a distinctive circular chapel at the heart of the hospital.

More than half a century later, Montana is still our home.

The buildings have changed. The way we care for children has evolved. But the mission that began in Philippi more than 90 years ago continues.

A new home. The same commitment to care ❤️

A special moment of thanksgiving ❤️

Last week, the St Joseph’s community came together for a special Thanksgiving Service led by Archbishop Sithembele Sipuka, Archbishop of Cape Town.

It was a meaningful opportunity to pause, reflect and give thanks for our journey - for those who came before us, for those who continue to serve today, and for the many people who have supported St Joseph’s along the way.

As we celebrate A Heritage of Care this Heritage Month, moments like these remind us that our heritage is more than our history. It lives on through the people, relationships and shared commitment to care that continue to carry St Joseph’s forward.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special occasion ❤️
