They were already waiting when we landed. ✈️👁️

This past week our Kodiak flew a cataract surgery team to Ulongwe in northern Mozambique.

Together with Missão Betesda em Moçambique and the MozMed program, the team set up a surgical clinic, and 39 people had their cataracts removed. For many of them, it's the first time in years they can see their families clearly.

This river is what stands in the way of close to 400 children attending their school in Mozambique.

Several years ago, Mercy Air helped to build a suspension bridge across the river to provide children with a safe crossing. But earlier this year the strong flood waters washed the bridge away leaving children stranded with no safe way to cross the crocodile infested river.

Now that the waters have finally reached a low point, our partners S.A.M. Ministries Inc. are preparing the site for a new bridge that will be more flood resistant. Mercy Air and Aviation for Good are partnering together to send a team of volunteers to complete the bridge in October.

The local villagers have already done a lot of preparation getting the materials ready, breaking up local rock for the concrete, cutting local trees for the bridge top, and welding the steel work. Even an old ox cart was repaired to help cart river sand to the building site.

We have a longstanding partnership with SAM Ministries and are excited to be partnering with them once again to serve the people of Mozambique.

Our Kodiak is in Ulongwe, Mozambique at the moment working with doctors from Bloemfontein to provide free cataract surgeries in this remote region.

This is a new route for us and an exciting opportunity to serve this part of Mozambique. The medical team are hoping to complete close to 50 cataract surgeries this week!

Our team gathered to pray with them and see them off and we look forward to welcoming them home later this week.

Imagine the joy of being able to see clearly again after years of blindness.

This is the highlight moment of the Kalahari Wings Outreach. Patients often arrive feeling nervous but after a simple 15 min procedure and a day to heal, they sit amazed at the clarity and colours they can now see!

People across the Kalahari region are battling with cataracts and there is currently a long waiting list for this life changing procedure. Mercy Air, along with partners Medical Mission Eswatini, Caring4Sight Namaqualand have been working together for the past five years to meet this need.

This trip saw the treatment of the 1400th surgery patient! A fantastic milestone and we so enjoy being part of this project.

What a difference one week can make!

The Kalahari Wings team returned from a record-breaking week in the Northern Cape providing life changing cataract surgeries for free! They spent the first half of the week in Upington treating 72 patients, including a new record of 40 cataract surgeries in one day.

The team then moved on to Springbok where they completed another 44 surgeries. That’s 116 people who can now see again!

Well done to everyone and a big thanks to Medical Mission Eswatini, Caring4Sight Namaqualand and ISTAT Foundation for making this outreach happen!

Kalahari Wings 13 is halfway!

What a week so far! The team of surgeons, nurses, and volunteers have been working tirelessly to complete 31 surgeries on Monday, and 40 on Tuesday! Well done to the team from Medical Mission Eswatini and Caring4Sight Namaqualand for your exceptional effort and efficiency!

The team moved on to Springbok yesterday for the second leg of the outreach and hope to complete an additional 30-40 surgeries there before the end of the week!

A big thank you to ISTAT Foundation for their partnership in this project. We wouldn't have been able to fly the team to serve these remote communities and give the gift of sight without you!

This past weekend, we flew and Medical Mission Eswatini to a remote strip in eSwatini for a day of screening women and children for eye conditions that would require medical intervention. Identifying these conditions early and organising sight saving surgery goes a long way to improving people's lives. This is just one way that aviation can be used to reach isolated communities.

They're on their way!

Aviation for Good trustees, Ian, Cathy, and Rachel departed with our pilots this morning for a day's medical outreach in eSwatini to get a hands on look at how aviation can be used for good in remote communities. It has been such an encouragement getting to know this team over the last week. Safe travels!
