Success in our communities isn't built on a spreadsheet - it's built on trust. 🀝

In South Africa, the mining and extractive sectors face a massive, deep-rooted trust deficit that goes back decades.

True progress won't happen until we hold our politicians accountable, push our mine operators further, and build a neutral table before escalation happens. That is exactly what the Institute for Social Dialogue is working to accomplish.

Watch the clip below and share your thoughts on how we can build better relationships between industries and local communities!

Mining is being asked to do more than ever before.

Social licence, energy transition, capital discipline and ESG verification all carry real pressure - and when dialogue starts late, the cost rises fast.

At ISD, we help mining stakeholders surface issues early, convene the right voices and structure neutral dialogue before disputes escalate.

Actual or potential social risk in your mining area?
Let ISD convene a neutral dialogue process before issues escalate.

ISD invites South African universities, research institutes and specialist consultancies to submit proposals for independent research on social cohesion in mining-host communities.

This research will help build an evidence base for stronger social dialogue, improved sector practice and more inclusive approaches to community development across South Africa’s mining belts.

Focus areas include: social license to operate, social dialogue, shared value, traditional leadership and municipal structures, SLP effectiveness, and the future of mining communities.

Submission deadline: 15 June 2026, 17:00 SAST

Beneath the surface of the gold sector, tensions may often brew long before they become visible.

While the industry focuses on operations, communities on the ground frequently experience a different reality. From consultation fatigue and delayed communication to overlapping structures and competing expectations, these hidden pressures can easily escalate when trust is broken.
At the Institute for Social Dialogue (ISD), we believe that true sustainability requires everyone to have an equal voice. We provide a completely neutral, independent space where communities, government, and mining companies can surface these issues early.
By moving away from fragmented engagement and toward structured dialogue, we help all stakeholders build mutual understanding and resolve challenges collaboratively.

There are a lot of misconceptions about structured dialogue. Does it mean taking sides? Does it delay real action?
At the Institute for Social Dialogue (ISD), we hear these myths all the time. But when the stakes are high, misunderstanding the process can cost you time, trust, and practical solutions.
Myth 1: It’s just another meeting.
Myth 2: It means choosing sides.
Myth 3: It delays action.
Myth 4: It’s based on opinion.
Ultimately, dialogue itself is not the end goal. It is the vital mechanism we use to build trust, clarify complex issues, and drive real-world outcomes.
Swipe through the carousel to see how we turn tension into practical outcomes!
