When we think of farm animals, we often forget that their health and well-being require the same dedication, respect, and specialised medical attention as any other animal. From the smallest duckling to the largest pig, their health matters.

Ensuring proper veterinary care, disease prevention, and humane living conditions is what is needed. But true health also means psychological well-being, space to roam, fresh air, and a life free from cruelty.

How are you championing farm animals today? Whether it's choosing plant-based options or supporting high-welfare farming, every choice makes a wave. 👇

Today, the celebrates a momentous 18-year rescueversary at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. 🥳

In 2007, the Braila group faced malnourishment and poor health due to the Romanian zoo’s financial constraints.

Their future was bleak, with the risk of being sold to private photographers. But in June 2008, FOUR PAWS stepped in and rescued them, bringing them to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. ⛰️

Sadly, Gamba passed in 2024. 💔

From extreme droughts to flooding, South Africa is feeling the heat of the climate crisis. But did you know intensive animal agriculture is one of the biggest drivers of both environmental destruction and animal abuse? 🛑

As we approach , we are calling for change.

Globally, a massive 77% of agricultural land is used for livestock and animal feed, driving:
💨 Skyrocketing greenhouse gases
🌳 Deforestation & biodiversity loss
🦠 Severe public health risks

How you can help:
🌱 Reduce your consumption of animal products.
🥗 Choose plant-based alternatives.
📢 Advocate for kinder, greener policies.

Every meal matters. Let’s choose to . 💙

If you’re looking for Tiger Rafik on a warm afternoon at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, there is a very good chance you’ll find him exactly like this, completely submerged and living his best life in his pool! 🐯💦

Unlike most domestic cats, tigers absolutely love the water. In the wild, they are incredible swimmers and love soaking in rivers to cool down or just relax. Rafik is no exception, and he takes his pool time very seriously. 😉

On 7 May 2015, he made the big trip to South Africa from FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary and arrived at his forever home at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. For over a decade now, he’s been able to feel the African sun, run on natural grass, and, clearly, enjoy his favourite swimming spot.

Drop a 🧡 in the comments if you think Rafik is the ultimate pool king!

🐾 KEY MOMENT FOR SOUTH AFRICA’S PETS! 🐾

For the very first time, we have a credible, verifiable data on owned companion animal populations in South Africa! New data reveals that South African households are home to 7 million dogs and 2 million cats. 🐶🐱

This is a major milestone, giving us a reliable foundation for evidence-based policy reform and humane population management.

But while we celebrate this progress, the picture isn't complete. This data excludes stray dogs and cats, who remain uncounted. To truly tackle the pet overpopulation challenge, especially in under-resourced communities, we urgently need data on stray populations too.

"This milestone must now translate into action," says Nicola van Wyk, Policy Advisor at FOUR PAWS ZA. "With the right data and coordinated effort, we can implement humane population management solutions that benefit animals, communities, and public health."

We continue to work with Stats SA to include future data on key indicators like sterilisation rates and access to veterinary care. 🩺✨

Let us know in the comments: How many dogs or cats make up your household? 🏡❤️

Behind some jackets, coats, and luxury designer pieces are stories we don’t often see, stories of animals farmed for fur, feathers, or wool under cruel conditions, and production practices that put profit before compassion. 💔

Kindness is a choice we can wear every day. There are beautiful, warm, and ethical alternatives that don’t rely on suffering only thoughtful purchases. 🛍️🩷

This winter, choose to stand for something softer than fabric and stronger than trends. Choose kindness. 🐑🪿🦊

Friday mood, according to Tigress Sky ☀️🐯

Once upon a not so great start, Sky was born into illegal keeping in Slovakia. Fast forward past paperwork, pit stops, and a casual 13,000km flight later… she’s now stretching her paws under the South African sky at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary.

Let Sky be your Friday reminder: your beginnings don’t get to decide your ending. ✈️✨

Tigress Jade was offered a sprinkle of catnip on her enrichment…but she wasn’t impressed! 🐯

While many domestic cats go wild for it, big cats like tigers, lions and leopards at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary can respond with playful rolling, rubbing and sniffing. 🤩🐾

The effects vary from cat to cat, some like Jade, prefer to ignore it and stick to their own favourite enrichment activities. This time, she opted for a delicious watermelon. 😋🍉

We are throwing it back to 2025 today because we are so incredibly excited to announce that our annual campaign is back for 2026! 🐶

Last year, your incredible support transformed the lives of so many pups. But the pressure on animal welfare organisations across South Africa is mounting, and as winter bites, vulnerable dogs need us more than ever.

This year, we’re partnering with the amazing Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha. Our goal? To fund 67 kennels! 🐕❤️

As our Director Fiona Miles says, "Real change happens when communities come together with compassion and purpose."
