Without serious breeders ..ALL breeds are doomed. This is why we have breed or species societies. To make sure that a breed remains true to its original standard and stays strong for generations not born yet. Horse societies have breeder inspection before a mare or stallion is allowed to breed. Same goes for many species. "But I don't want to show ..I just want pretty birds .."doesn't help at all. If you buy great stock and gooi it in with your rooster that jumped the fence from next door ..you are slapping serious breeder in the face. Some people have spent 40 years keeping birds to standard ..does that mean nothing at all ?..
Yet as breeders we have to reduce our numbers occasionally and sell those who are excess or don't pass muster with us for the next breeding generation. I can weep when good birds are lost in the backyard system. Never to be seen again. Happened to my Sumatras ..and other breeds too over the years. I respect the need for pretty birds .. but any bird will do. Doesn't have to be something I've worked on for 20 years. Crossbreeds are good for a household. So are hybrids. Why on earth spend a fortune on good birds and then let them disappear into a crossbreeding mess ?I may sound harsh but money and ego have become more important than common sense and dedication.

The main cause is the male not effectively fertilizing the female, it can be because the male is too young/old, the male-to-female ratio is off, the male is infertile/sick, stressed.

Other factors are lack of nutrition, insufficient lighting, and imperfect mating.
