What's on my mind ?as usual a lot ..and after the
show this weekend I'm concerned about where this 26+ year hobby is going ..entries to shows are good but are swayed in favour of "fashionable "breeds..breeds that are perceived as having value and resale value..many older utility breeds are dying out(in the hands of serious breeders anyway)4 leghorns on show ..One Rhode Island Red..2 New Hampshire reds ..it's a sad story when nobody cares about the future of these breeds. When are people going to see that there's no money to be made in this hobby but the future of these breeds lies in our hands. It takes only 3 to 5 serious breeders to keep a breed going in its pure form..but 300 bad breeders can destroy a breed forever

This boy is special. To me anyway. He was entered on ppk Youngbird show on 25 April ..he won Best of Breed and when I was debenching and putting him in his box he escaped ..in NGchurch hall grounds in Muldersdrift with resident Spotted Genet..there was no catching him. He hid inbthe thick bush ..next day nothing. ..couldn't catch him. Went home. Caretaker there said he'd try to trap him ..anyway...after a week bush living and evading being eaten by a genet finally he came to his senses and was caught by PPK. I got him back this weekend. Eternally grateful to PPK and Joachim Losos for getting my boy back to me.

First babies are in the brooder. So hopefully this will be our focus and concentration going forward. Feeding a nation is more important than points.
So far they have not disappointed me. And an added benefit is they have broodiness too. In the next few weeks we will have a giveaway of 30 fertile eggs to a lucky person wanting to try out the Rustic.

It’s Mother’s Day in some parts of this beautiful planet and I love to take every opportunity I can to celebrate womanity and how we have nurture flowing from our bones whether we are mothers or not.

Good show in Middleburg yesterday. Big show. Drive home was exhausting stressful..lots of trucks and the roads are getting increasingly scary as I get older. Sadly I have to admit that these trips must come to an end. The expense. The risks and the stress are outweighing the enjoyment lately. Mothers day will be spent unpacking birds ..making sure they're all OK and happy ..making sure all at home are OK and happy .Grateful for being home safely and seeing good friends again .
