LIV Durban

LIV Durban LIV provides holistic residential care for orphaned and vulnerable children. LIV exists to raise the next generation of leaders in our nation.

It is our mission, our purpose, and our passion. We place parentless children into a family environment where they receive unconditional love, spiritual discipleship, care and nurturing. All their physical needs are met. Children are tomorrow’s future, so the manner in which they are raised will influence who they become. HIV/AIDS and poverty have resulted in many children being abandoned and orph

aned. We want these children to grow up to be a generation that will influence positive change within South Africa, our continent and indeed the world. If these children are equipped with essential moral values and life skills, they truly can live lives that influence and inspire significance and lasting impact. The future plan is to see many villages across our land, raising future leaders, and ‘turning scars into stars’ by providing a fresh start in a supportive community. The train is moving….we invite you to get onboard.

Nosipho is turning three years old in July.

When she came to LIV in April, she couldn’t stand or walk, and was still having trouble with crawling.

Over the next few months, this precious little girl received incredible love, support and encouragement from her LIV mom, the cluster she lives in, our on-site therapist Pamela and the ECD. And in May, we witnessed her taking her first steps!

Sometimes the most special victories we see happen in the smallest, most mundane moments. We might just miss it if we don’t pay attention.

All glory to Jesus for his steadfast love and faithfulness as He strengthens His people to love on His children, just as He loves us.

This is a story about what is possible when organisations work together towards the same goal.

Amanda arrived at LIV Durban when she was 6 years old. She had lived at Ithemba Lethu, a baby home that cares holistically for vulnerable babies from 0 to 2 years old.

Amanda arrived at Ithemba Lethu at 18 months old with significant developmental delays and challenges. By the time she reached the age when other children were finding new homes, an opportunity had not opened up for Amanda yet. At 6 years old, her next steps were still unclear, and her family at Ithemba Lethu were praying for the right opportunity to open up, knowing that she desperately needed more space.

And then, the “suddenly’s” happened.

Amanda moved into LIV Durban with her new LIV foster mother, Mum Thembi.

“She was so excited,” says Melissa Leslie, director of Ithemba Lethu. “The bed was all made up for her… she felt like she was going home.”

“It’s so important that organisations are working together,” says Nicole Freese, social worker at Ithemba Lethu. “At Ithemba Lethu, we've got a role and a function, and we've got limited resources, but out there are organisations that can take it to the next level.”

Organisations working in this space often just work in silos. “But it's so important that we're not threatened by what each person does, but we actually come together and we say, ‘How are we going to give children the absolute best that they deserve?’” says Nicole.

These children never asked to be in the system. They came. And we have a responsibility to make sure each child gets to be who they were created to be. 🫀

This is Christine.

In light of National Child Protection Week starting today, she has a beautiful story to share about how God so intentionally prepared her and her family to adopt twin boys.

When Christine and her husband, Jan George, decided to adopt, she felt God put the desire to have twin boys on her heart, but wasn't quite sure if it would all work out that way.

But over the next few months, she has testimony after testimony to share about how God worked in the details to pave the way for two precious twin boys to enter into their family.

May her story point you to God's goodness and His heart for his children.

This is Anna.

After doing LIV4Change in 2018, coming back to the village to work in our Early Childhood Development department in 2021 and needing to leave because of a denied visa, the Lord put it on Anna's heart to come back again this year.

With fresh perspective and a new attitude, Anna expected to be involved in a new way on the village this time. But to her surprise, she felt prompted by the Lord to go back to the babies class in the ECD, where she'd worked before.

Listen to her testimony of how the Lord knows our hearts better than we know ourselves. He puts us exactly where we need to be and qualifies us to be there, no matter what the world around us says, or even what we tell ourselves. He never changes.

We hope her story encourages you!

See you next Friday! 🌟

For years, we have dreamed of becoming a truly sustainable village. 🌤💧🌿

After the devastating 2022 Durban floods left the village without water for six weeks, it was clear that something needed to change.

A few weeks after the floods, a member of the Masimong Foundation reached out to the village and asked to support the village in an area of need. That need was water. The Masimong Foundation generously sponsored exploration for a borehole, and the beginning of our water story was birthed.

Experts thought that if three boreholes could be located, they would produce enough water for the entire village.

When exploration began, a miracle happened. "By the Lord's grace, He supplied not only enough water for the whole village, but four times more water than we actually needed," says Werner Louwrens, who has faithfully led the water project over the last four years.

Over his 20 years of surveying the area, our surveyor said he had never seen a borehole big enough to supply the water LIV would need. The Lord's kindess.

What followed was the beginning of the “Living Off the Grid” campaign: a vision to provide reliable water and solar power for the children, families, school, and medical facilities at LIV Durban. Through the campaign, LIV was able to raise the R2 million needed to implement this vision.

"I was always excited about this project, but could never understand how in the world this can happen," Werner says.

"The Lord works one step at a time, despite our shortfalls. At the end of the day, it's Him doing these things, He's just using us as His vessels. We just need to be obedient to the next step, no matter how big or small," says Werner.

Today, every department at LIV Durban operates using clean water pumped from our borehole, purified in our water purification plant and pumped up to each house and department.

"We will be saving R1,8 million on our water bills each year," Werner says.

Thank you so much to each and every partner, donor, supplier and intercessor that has contributed to making the water project a reality, helping us to more efficiently serve the community and serve our children. 💧

This is Mom Fikile.

Mom Fikile has faithfully led our LIV Clean team for 10 years now. Back in 2020, Covid 19 brought about the opportunity for Mom Fikile to plant a church in our Owethu community clinic, along with two other staff members, Malume Ben and Mom Sindi.

Listen to her story of what God can do and build with a simple “yes”.

The ultimate vision for our therapy department is that we would become a place of such excellence in healing, that people would begin to ask why it works — and we would be able to point them to the cross.”

Our therapy department spans a wide range of care: occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, educational psychology, psychology, and counselling. At the core of this vision is a desire to create a space where children can experience holistic healing, mentally, physically, and emotionally, bridging developmental gaps and nurturing each child toward wholeness.

“Jesus cares for these children far more than we ever could, and He is the true source of all healing,” says Jess Hattam, Therapy Department Mentor.

If you would like to partner with us, through prayer, giving, or offering your skills and services, we would love to hear from you.
