We often say, "It takes a village to raise a child." We love the idea of a community that nurtures, feeds, and teaches. But the village has a much more serious side.

When we see a child in our neighbourhood who is neglected, hungry, or showing signs of fear, and we choose to "mind our own business," we are breaking the village's most important promise.

Child protection isn't just the job of the police or social workers, it happens at the garden gate, the tuck shop, and the street corner. It is the courage to ask "Are you okay?" and the responsibility to call for help when the answer is "No."

This Child Protection Week, let’s be the eyes that watch, the ears that listen, and the voices that speak up for those who cannot.
Your intervention could be the turning point in a child’s entire life story!

In our society, we often raise boys to be "strong," to be "tough," and to "man up." But when we equate masculinity with silence, we leave our boys dangerously vulnerable.

True child protection means recognising that boys are just as at risk of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as girls - but they are often half as likely to talk about it. By forcing them to hide their tears, we accidentally force them to hide their trauma.

It is time to change the narrative.

A boy who speaks up is brave. A boy who expresses pain is strong. A boy who asks for help is protected.
Let’s disrupt the stereotypes that keep our sons, brothers, and students in the dark.
Check in on the boys in your life today. Let them know that "brave" means speaking your truth.

When we talk about child protection, we often think of physical safety. But intellectual safety is just as vital. When a child is denied an education, whether through forced labour, neglect, or lack of resources, their future is being stolen.

Education is the most effective long-term protection strategy we have.
A child who can read, write, and think critically is a child who:
• Knows their rights: They are harder to exploit.
• Can seek help: They have the vocabulary to speak up.
• Breaks the cycle: They move from vulnerability to opportunity.

Let’s keep our children in school and their futures in focus.

The playground has moved. Have your safety measures moved with it?🤳

We teach our children to look both ways before crossing the street. We teach them not to talk to strangers in the park. But are we teaching them how to navigate the "digital streets" of social media, gaming lobbies, and instant messaging?

Child protection no longer stops at the boundary of your home. Cyber-bullying, grooming, and identity theft are real-world threats that happen in the palm of a child's hand.
Protecting a child in the digital age isn't just about "taking the phone away".
It’s about:
• Open Dialogue: Making sure they feel safe coming to you when something feels "off" online.
• Privacy Literacy: Teaching them that their personal data and their bodies are not for public consumption.
• Active Supervision: Knowing who they are talking to and what platforms they are using.

Digital safety is a fundamental right. Let's ensure our children are as safe in the cloud as they are in our homes. 📲

When we talk about Child Protection Week, we often look at the playground, the classroom, or the home. But the most critical period of protection begins long before a child is born.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is 100% preventable, yet its effects are 100% permanent.

Every time a child is exposed to alcohol in the womb, their right to a healthy brain, a developing body, and a fair start in life is put at risk.

Child protection is a commitment to a child's life. It starts with the very first heartbeat. If we want to build a nation where children thrive, we must ensure they are born with the best possible foundation.

To every expectant mother: You are your child’s first line of defence. To every partner and friend: You are the support system that makes a sober pregnancy possible.
Let’s protect our future from the very beginning. 🤰

Today marks the start of National Child Protection Week in South Africa (29 May – 5 June 2026). This week is a vital reminder that the safety, dignity, and well-being of our children should be protected by our Constitution and driven by our communities.

This year’s national theme is “Working together in ending violence against children.”

What is Child Protection Week?
It is a nationwide call to action to raise awareness and actively create environments where children can thrive without fear. It reminds us that protection happens every single day in our homes, our schools, our streets, and our digital spaces.

Abuse and neglect thrive in silence, but safety happens when we choose to stand together. Let’s listen to our children, believe them, and shield them.

💚 Wear your green ribbon this week as a promise that you will not look away.
