Bowlers 4 Babies

Bowlers 4 Babies We make up and donate gift packs for the babies of new mothers at the local Provincial hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal, SouthAfrica.

These mothers are from a poor rural background and often present at the hospital with no baby clothes for the new arrival. We are a group of lady bowlers from bowling clubs on the Natal South Coast in Kwazulu Natal , South Africa who knit, sew and crochet items for babies. We also welcome donations from any non-bowlers who have the same desire to serve the community.

Report from Kirstine :

Good morning Liana and I took a trip out to Murchison yesterday, the maternity ward was quite full!

There were two prems, a little boy and a little girl, it’s the little girl in the picture.

There were two moms in labour, and two moms in for Caesar.

We handed out a total of 33 packs and left 6 with Sr Latha as we normally do.

There were 3 mommies who had lost their babies, they each got a small gift too.

Nurse Cele accompanied us, he’s in the picture with Liana and I. He told us that he is the ward champion for KMC, (kangaroo mother care) and asked whether we could assist with more kangaroo pouches (they still have 14 in stock from what we’re given them previously) but Sr Latha said they are moving to KMC more and more, if you look at the baby in the pink hat you will see she doesn’t have a top on, she’s about to be KMC d with her mom- skin to skin- the baby only has a hat and booties on.

There were more boys than girls yesterday, and as always the staff were happy to see us and Sr Latha was very grateful, thank you everyone for your time and dedication to the moms and babies in our area! 🌸

A big " Thank You " to Beth Dowey of N. Ireland and Ann Glendinning of Scotland for posting lots of lovely baby jerseys, hats, booties, babygros and socks to me.
I'm sorry that they all got mixed up in the unpacking, but the photo shows all of their contributions.
Thank you ladies for knitting all these wonderful items for the babies. I shall be taking them back with me to S Africa in August.

I'm visiting England at the moment and have invited a few of our stalwarts ( old supporters ) who could no longer post any donations to us in South Africa ( due to the failed SA Post Office ) to post to me in England .
I plan to take a 2nd suitcase back to SA, full of baby clothes.
So far Helen Menezes of Warwickshire and Anne Field of the United Reformed Church of Melbourn ( near Cambridge ) have posted to me.
These ladies have been wonderfully generous and my case is filling up fast.

Angela and I had the privilege of going out to Murchison this morning. There were 5 premmies, (one set of twins)
8 antenatal mommies,
1 baby who had just been delivered by caesarean
10 postnatal moms and 1 mom who had unfortunately lost her baby.

Angela got the biggest most spontaneous hug from one of the moms! 😁 you can see by the smiles that your hard work is appreciated!

The little girl being kangaroo nursed weighs 1.65 kg, and she’s being nursed in one of our pouches.

The ward delivered 25 babies this weekend, one of whom was dressed in our goodies as mommy didn’t have anything.

Lots of smiles all round, Sr Latha told Angela that we are the only ones who visit the ward and that our gifts are particularly welcome in the winter!

EN Thembeka Nzama accompanied us today 💕 Angela was the photographer today, she told me to use a few photos, but how could I choose? 🤷‍♀️

Sorry for the long break in communications. However we have not been idle.
We have delivered baby packs to Murchison each month ( March, April and May ) . Kirstine and I alternate driving out. We have been assisted by Liesel, Tina, Gerda and Trixi.
Dr Romola continues to hand out teddies in the paediatric wards of 4 hospitals ( that we don't have access to ) . She is also distributing prem baby packs on her rounds.
The ladies continue to knit , sew and crochet for the babies. We had a big get together in April ( 31 ladies) when a mountain of goodies was brought in. The ladies come to my house monthly to make up the packs and we go out to Murchison every month. Now that the operating theatre is open again and caesars can be scheduled, the numbers of babies had returned to normal. So we are back to taking out 46 packs at each visit.
I'm attaching a photo of the contents of a baby pack rolled up in a fleecy blanket. In winter we will be giving thicker crocheted blankets instead of the fleecy one.

We had accumulated a lot of teddies so we gave them to Dr Ramola ( the pediatrician for Ugu district). She has been distributing them to the sick children in the paediatric wards of local rural hospitals. These photos were taken at GJ Crookes ( near Pennington ), at Murchison Hospital and at St Andrews ( near Harding ).

Kirstine and Carol handed out 14 baby packs at the maternity ward today. Nurses Dlamini and Khuzwayo assisted them.
The theatre is still closed so all caesaruans are referred to the Provincial Hospital in Port Shepstone.
There was one set of twin boys in the prem ward and 2 other prem babies. They left 6 baby packs with Sr Latha to distribute at a later stage.

The mommy of the first baby born in 2025 at Murchison received a special baby pack.
