⚖️ BACK IN COURT TODAY ⚖️

Today we return to court for the case that began on 21 June 2025.

Today we speak for 3 dogs.

For these dogs, this isn't an abstract legal case. Their futures are literally being decided. While the case moves through the courts, they remain in kennels, unable to be rehomed and unable to move on with their lives.

They wait.

They wait for a decision about where they will spend the rest of their lives. They wait while months turn into years. And every day they wait, we continue to feed them, care for them, provide veterinary treatment when needed and make sure they are safe.

At R75 per dog, per day, that's R225 every day just for these three dogs.

Today, Joanne and Dr Natalie have both been subpoenaed to appear in court. They will stand up and speak for these animals because the three dogs cannot speak for themselves.

And when we walk out of court today, their lives may still be in limbo.

But we will keep showing up.

We will keep speaking.

And we will keep fighting for them.

🐾 If you can help, please consider sponsoring a court case kennel for R500 a month.

☕ LET’S TALK HONESTLY ABOUT RESCUE ROAST ☕

Yes, it’s damn good coffee.

And the hot chocolate?

Heavenly. 🍫

But Rescue Roast is about a hell of a lot more than good taste.

We earn a commission on every bag from our range that is sold with our logo on it.

And here’s where it gets even better than the coffee...

That commission has genuinely been a lifeline for us on some really bloody hard days.

It has meant petrol money when we suddenly needed to throw ourselves into the vehicle and dash off on a rescue.

Because apparently animals have absolutely no respect for budgets, business hours or the concept of “perhaps next month.” 🙄

It has meant we could put electricity on when the meter was looking dangerously close to becoming a decorative object.

It has meant that on nights when we went to bed wondering:

“Okay... what the hell do we do now?”

We could wake up on commission payment day and say:

“Okay. We can handle today.”

Not tomorrow.

Not next week.

Today.

And in rescue, sometimes getting through today is the entire bloody plan.

And if you don’t drink coffee, that’s okay.

WE DO!! 😂☕

The state vet who regularly comes here does too.

Violet and Nadine, who volunteer their time training our pups, building cat enrichment and helping us sort through the daily rescue chaos, do too.

So if you don’t want to order coffee for yourself...

ORDER IT FOR US. 🐾

https://www.rescueroast.co.za/collections/cat-angel-refuge

Your conscience will be clean, our coffee cupboard will be happy and somewhere in the background Karen will probably be making coffee while wondering why rescue has once again turned into a full-contact sport.

And now for the REALLY good news...

☕ RESCUE ROAST NOW DOES SUBSCRIPTIONS! ☕

You can subscribe for yourself and have your coffee or hot chocolate delivered regularly.

OR...

YOU CAN SUBSCRIBE FOR US. ❤️

Yes.

You can literally make Cat Angel Refuge your monthly coffee subscription.

Every month you can sit there enjoying your coffee while knowing that your subscription is helping keep a rescue running.

Because apparently we have reached the stage where coffee is an operational expense.

And honestly?

It bloody well is. 😂

Petrol.
Electricity.
Emergency rescues.
Food.
Vet bills.
More vet bills.
Bills that breed overnight when nobody is looking...

Rescue Roast helps us deal with all of it.

📦 DELIVERY ADDRESS:
Cat Angel Refuge
2 Vos Street
Zeerust

And remember:

EVERY BAG YOU BUY FROM OUR RESCUE ROAST RANGE BENEFITS THE REFUGE.

Every bag helps.

Every order matters.

Every subscription gives us one more little piece of predictable income in a rescue world where absolutely nothing else appears to have received the memo about predictable.

To everyone who already buys Rescue Roast, keeps buying it, subscribes, sends it as gifts or recommends it to someone else...

THANK YOU. ❤️

You’re not just buying coffee.

You’re helping keep the lights on.

You’re helping keep the vehicles moving.

You’re helping us get to the next animal that needs us.

And occasionally, you’re helping prevent a rescue worker from staring blankly into the fridge at 10pm wondering whether coffee counts as dinner.

RESCUE ROAST. ☕
Good coffee.
Heavenly hot chocolate.
And surprisingly effective rescue survival equipment. 🐾❤️

Because apparently caffeine really can help save lives.

And possibly sanity.

Mostly caffeine.

☁️🌧️ SUNDAY AT THE REFUGE: CLOUDY, WET & COFFEE-FUELLED ☕🦄🍰

Sometimes, in rescue, you need to take time out.

Yesterday was a long one. Between the weather, the damage and the very enthusiastic mop-up operation, there wasn't exactly much time left for celebrating Luke's birthday.

So today, Karen, Luke, Jo, Nadine and Violet decided to take some time out just to be people. ❤️

No rescuing.
No cleaning.
No fixing things.
No trying to solve the world's problems.

Just good coffee, a game of Unstable Unicorns, Luke's birthday cake and a few hours where we could simply sit, laugh and just be.

Because after yesterday's mop-up, that cake wasn't just birthday cake.

It was emotional support cake. 😂🍰

Nadine had also planned a wood hunt, but the weather had other ideas. So the wood hunt was cancelled in favour of staying dry and pretending we have our lives together. 🌧️😂

☕ And speaking of coffee...

https://www.rescueroast.co.za/collections/cat-angel-refuge

PS: We are going to be needing more Rescue Roast very soon!

It is absolutely flying here because we have successfully converted even more people to the coffee side. There may be no saving them now. 😂

You can buy Rescue Roast and have it sent to us, helping keep the rescue humans caffeinated...

OR

Buy it for yourself and enjoy it, because nothing makes life better than good coffee, especially when that good coffee also helps rescue. ❤️☕

Sometimes rescue needs food.
Sometimes rescue needs funds.
Sometimes rescue needs a mop.

And sometimes rescue needs cake, coffee, Unstable Unicorns and five people remembering that they are humans too. 🐾☕🦄🍰

Today was one of those days. ❤️

THE GOOD NEWS, THE BAD NEWS AND THE “YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME” NEWS…

⚡ THE GOOD NEWS:
Our electricity was finally restored last night! 🎉

We celebrated.

Briefly.

🔌 THE BAD NEWS:
We have 25 units left.

Because apparently electricity has decided it also wants to live on the edge.

While the power was off, we used our data and the extra time we suddenly had to sort out more data, because naturally we had a few situations that needed dealing with.

And now our phones have joined the electricity in the “please feed me or I stop functioning” club.

📱 MTN & VODACOM

Both MTN and Vodacom need actual airtime/talktime first to repay the extra time we used.

MTN:
Airtime first. Once the extra time is paid back, MTN then needs data.

And because MTN apparently believes in debt collection with enthusiasm, any data bought gets swallowed by the extra time debt first.

Vodacom:
Airtime first, but data can be bought whenever needed.

So yes, we currently have electricity debt, airtime debt and data debt.

At this point we are waiting for the dogs to start sending us invoices. 🫠

⚖️ AND THEN THERE'S TOMORROW…

Our original plans for tomorrow have officially been cancelled.

Instead of doing what we were supposed to be doing, we need to see a lawyer.

Because apparently running a rescue, feeding everyone, cleaning everything, dealing with emergencies and trying to keep the lights on wasn't quite enough excitement for one week.

We now have two situations that need legal attention.

Threats are not taken lightly, and neither is ongoing harassment. Some things are no longer suitable for being handled with patience, polite messages and the traditional rescue technique of quietly muttering into a mop bucket.

These matters need to be dealt with properly and through the correct channels.

Honestly, we'd much rather be dealing with p**p, puppies and paperwork of the animal variety.

But apparently September has chosen “legal drama” as today's special. 🙄

❤️ SO, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP US KEEP THE LIGHTS ON AND OUR PHONES TALKING…

⚡ ELECTRICITY

📞 VODACOM AIRTIME

Every contribution helps.

Because apparently at Cat Angel Refuge we don't believe in having just one crisis at a time.

That would be far too relaxing. 😂🫠

Thank you to everyone who keeps helping us through the chaos, the emergencies, the electricity meter, the phone companies and whatever fresh plot twist tomorrow decides to throw at us.

Compassion with backbone. Even when the backbone is held together with caffeine, duct tape and sheer bloody-mindedness. ❤️🐾

WHAT A WAY TO SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LUKE! 🎂🌨️

Today it’s Luke, Karen and Jo on duty.

Because obviously, when it’s Luke’s birthday, the universe decided three people needed a team-building exercise. 😂

Firstly, we’ve had NO POWER since 2pm yesterday.

The municipality is on strike, so we have absolutely no idea when the power will return.

Could be today.
Could be tomorrow.
Could be when Luke turns 24.
At this stage we’re basically waiting for divine intervention. 😂

Then, at midnight…

SURPRISE!

HAIL.

And not a polite little sprinkling either.

A LOT of hail.

Thankfully, Karen had already put all the garden dogs into their enclosed kennels because apparently she possesses the rare rescue superpower known as PREPARATION.

The cats, however, were not consulted.

The cats panicked.

The cat runs are now in disarray.

Panels are down.

Things are everywhere.

And the three humans responsible for putting the entire place back together are standing there thinking:

“Happy birthday, Luke.” 😂

So today’s birthday itinerary is:

🎂 Birthday celebrations

🧹 Clean-up

🐈 Reorganise traumatised cats

🔨 Put panels back

💧 Mop everything

💡 Continue existing without electricity

🎉 Pretend this is a perfectly normal birthday

We’ve kept the original sound on the early-morning videos because Luke, for once in his life, actually sounds GENUINELY SHOCKED.

And frankly, after everything this rescue has thrown at him, getting an actual reaction out of Luke deserves its own birthday video. 😂

But then, just when we were wondering how on earth we were going to fit feeding ourselves into today's already ridiculous schedule...

Kivashni came to the rescue. ❤️

She sent TWO Checkers Sixty60 drivers to us with much-needed items PLUS lunch for the three of us.

Honestly, Kivashni, thank you. ❤️

That is not just food and supplies arriving at the gate. That is two less things we have to worry about while we mop, clean, fix panels, sort cats and try to restore some form of order to this place.

One less stress on an already ridiculous day.

Sometimes the unexpected kindness arrives at exactly the right moment, and today it really did. ❤️

Now, back to the clean-up crew.

Happy birthday, Luke. 🎂

Your present from Mother Nature was hail.

Your present from the municipality was no electricity.

And your present from Kivashni was two Sixty60 deliveries, everything we needed and lunch.

I think we can all agree which one wins. 😂❤️🌨️

🐾 CAT ANGEL REFUGE: WHAT WE NEED RIGHT NOW 🐾

We’re hanging on. We’re hanging in. And the rescue bank account is currently held together by stubbornness, caffeine and questionable financial decisions. 😂

Here’s our current list of fires to put out:

❤️ PIET: R800

Piet works the most days of all our staff and gives so much of himself to the refuge and the animals.

He is the only staff member we still owe money to, and we owe him R800.

Once Piet is paid, all our wages are completely sorted. We’d really love to get this done for him. ❤️

🐶🐱 FOOD URGENTLY NEEDED

Dogs: Ideal, Lifestyle, Bob Martin or Jock
Available from PnP asap, Checkers, Takealot & Amazon.

Cats: Whiskas, Catmor or Monty and Me

📦 Delivery: 2 Vos Street, Zeerust

🍲 FOOD FOR OUR STAFF ON MONDAY

We also need to make sure our humans are fed!

For Monday, our staff need:

💧 Drinking water
🥩 Beef or chicken

Because apparently the staff also expect food. The nerve. 😂

🩺 VET BILL: R10,461

We have had to cap the account at R10,000. Apart from sponsored sterilisations, we’re currently stuck and desperately need to bring this bill down.

Apparently vets have not yet accepted “we’ll pay when the universe provides” as a payment plan. 😂

🍽️ RABIES TRAINING CATERING: R3,370

The original bill was R8,000, so we’ve already made a big dent. We just need to clear the remaining R3,370.

⚡ ELECTRICITY: 64 UNITS

And Paulina is doing washing today.

So basically, those 64 units are living on borrowed time. 😂

---

We don't need one person to fix everything.

R50 helps.
R100 helps.
A bag of food helps.
A few tins help.
Electricity helps.
Food for our staff helps.

Every little bit keeps this slightly deranged rescue bus moving. 🐾😂

Some days you don't realise just how ridiculously fast time flies.

7 YEARS AGO Teddy Roosevelt was adopted from us. 🥹🐾

Teddy was a Chow, and one of the hardest dogs we ever had to home. Not because he wasn't wonderful, obviously. He was just very committed to making sure everyone understood that he would be interviewing them. 😂

Eventually, he found his human. And apparently, it was a match made in heaven.

Every year on his adoptaversary, Teddy's human sends us an update AND makes a donation to Cat Angel Refuge.

Today, seven years later, we received another update and a much-needed donation. ❤️

Which means that while Teddy has spent the last 7 years living his best life, his human has spent 7 years remembering the rescue that once had the privilege of being his temporary staff. 😂

These are the stories that keep us going. The dogs who leave our gates don't leave our hearts, and knowing that they're loved, happy and thriving years later is the absolute best kind of rescue update.

And the fact that their humans still remember us years later? That's the cherry on the cake. ❤️

Happy 7th adoptaversary, Teddy Roosevelt! 🎉

Seven years of love, cuddles, probably questionable behaviour, and successfully training your human to make an annual donation to Cat Angel Refuge.

We always knew you were clever. 😂🐾

Thank you to Teddy's human for remembering us every year. That donation arrived at a particularly important time and is very, very appreciated. ❤️

🐾✂️ COOPER HAS JOINED THE STERILISATION CLUB! ✂️🐾

And we are carrying on with our sterilisations, because apparently sitting quietly at the shelter and behaving normally is not part of our job description. 😂

Today it was Cooper’s turn.

Cooper is a very loved, very happy pup. ❤️
His mom and dad are equally loved and equally happy.

They absolutely adore their humans.

The rest of humanity? Not so much.

Humans? ❌ NO.
Vehicles? ❌ DEFINITELY NO.
Anyone approaching with suspicious intentions? ❌ PREPARE TO MEET THE TEETH.

Dad has decided that his life's mission is to eat everyone, including the car.

Mom has apparently reviewed his security strategy and decided:

"Excellent. I'll help." 😂

So yes, Mom and Dad are booked for their sterilisations too.

We just need to work out the safety logistics first, because transporting two dogs who believe the entire outside world is a buffet presents certain... challenges.

We would ideally like everyone to arrive at the vet with the same number of limbs, ears and vehicle panels they left with. 😂

But watch this space!

Mom and Dad are coming for their sterilisation appointments next.

Cooper lives in the area on the other side of the mountain where Kitty 1, 2 and 3 live.

And yes, we know that because we actually climbed the mountain and found Kitty 1, 2 and 3 on the other side. ⛰️🐱🐱🐱

Those three have already been sterilised, so naturally we thought:

"Why stop at one side of the mountain?"

Apparently our sterilisation programme now includes mountaineering, navigation and potentially negotiating with dogs who want to eat the transport vehicle. 😂

But underneath all the chaos, this is incredibly important work.

Every animal we sterilise means fewer unwanted litters, fewer animals facing uncertain futures and fewer preventable cases ending up in rescue.

❤️ Our adventurous sterilisations are made possible by the National Sterilization Project and the amazing people who say YES when they ask for funding.

Without you, these sterilisations simply would not happen.

You help us reach animals who might otherwise never get the chance.

And because rabies prevention is just as important to us, Cooper also received his rabies vaccination today. 💉🐶

So today's scoreboard:

✂️ Cooper: sterilised
💉 Rabies vaccination: DONE
🐶 Mom & Dad: booked for sterilisation
⛰️ Mountain: conquered
🐱 Kitty 1, 2 & 3: already sterilised
🚗 Car: survived... for now
🦷 Dad: still plotting

This is what your support makes possible.

Sometimes it's a straightforward trip to the vet.

Sometimes it's a mountain expedition.

And sometimes you have to devise a military-grade extraction plan for two very enthusiastic canine security guards. 😂

But we keep going. One animal, one sterilisation and one rabies vaccination at a time. ❤️🐾

Compassion with backbone. Always.

03/09/2026

🧁🎂 LUKE'S BIRTHDAY APPEAL 🎂🧁

Luke's birthday is 5 September, and this year something has happened that has honestly left us a little emotional.

For the first time ever, Luke has asked for something for himself.

And we're still in shock.

Not because of what he asked for, but because Luke is usually the one giving, never asking. He puts the shelter, the animals and everyone else's needs before his own, day after day.

So when we asked:

“What can we ask people for to say thank you and happy birthday?”

We really weren't expecting him to have an answer.

But he did.

“Cake flour, baking powder, castor sugar, cream of tartar, bicarb, milk, vanilla essence etc. I'm starting to bake at night.”

And honestly, our hearts melted. ❤️

Because after everything he gives to the shelter, he's found something that brings him a little happiness.

By day, Luke runs the shelter when we're busy. He deals with the animals, emergencies, vets, the general public and far too many children for his liking. 😂

By night, he bakes.

Someone has already separately spoilt him with flour, eggs, milk and other baking basics, which is incredibly kind. ❤️

So now we'd love to help him with the things he still needs to get his little night-time baking hobby going:

🧁 LUKE'S BIRTHDAY WISH LIST

🥣 Mixing bowl
🥄 Measuring spoons
🥛 Measuring jug
🍰 Air-fryer-friendly silicone baking moulds/tins
🍰 Air-fryer-friendly aluminium baking tins
🍫 Cocoa
🥥 Coconut
🧁 Other basic baking equipment and ingredients suitable for air-fryer baking

Nothing extravagant.

Just a few simple things that can help him enjoy something that is his.

Because Luke spends so much of his life giving to others. He rarely asks for anything, and that's exactly why this birthday feels a little different.

For once, we'd like to give something back to him.

Something that isn't for the shelter.

Something that isn't for the animals.

Something that is simply because Luke deserves a little joy too. ❤️

And yes, we're still slightly stunned that the man who never asks for anything has finally said:

“I want to bake.” 😂🧁

We're taking this as our cue to spoil him.

📍 Cat Angel Refuge
2 Vos Street, Zeerust

If you'd like to help with something from Luke's birthday baking wish list, we'd be incredibly grateful.

By day, he takes care of everyone else.
This birthday, let's take care of Luke. ❤️🐾🎂

And if anyone hears the unmistakable sound of an air fryer working at midnight at the refuge...

don't worry. It's just Luke. He's baking. 😂🧁
