🚑🐾 And just like that, today's plans have changed. Again.

It's a Sunday.

Jo has flu.

Karen has flu.

Neither of them should really be doing much more than drinking coffee, complaining dramatically and attempting to sleep.

Jo was finally sitting still for five minutes and was busy falling asleep.

Karen has a long-standing theory that every single time Jo dares to sleep during the day, an animal somewhere immediately decides to have an emergency.

At this point we are starting to suspect she may be right.

So, as Jo was drifting off, the rescue hotline apparently notified the universe and we are now dashing out 80km to collect a dog that urgently needs veterinary care.

Our inspection scheduled for tomorrow, which is another 60km away, now has to take a back seat because the funds set aside for that trip are being used to get this dog to safety and to a vet.

The reality is simple: we cannot look at an animal in need and ask it to wait while we juggle spreadsheets, budgets and bank balances.

When a dog needs help, it needs help now.

This is exactly why we keep talking about our sustainability programme and why we ask for support so often. Emergencies don't arrive with a booking confirmation, a warning siren or a convenient bank balance. They simply arrive and expect us to respond.

Every rescue, every inspection, every litre of fuel and every veterinary bill comes from the same limited pot.

And this is also why our veterinary account is always growing. We are incredibly grateful for our vet's patience and support, but emergencies don't care what day it is, how much fuel is left, or whether both humans are running on flu medication, stubbornness and questionable life choices.

In fact, they seem to prefer Sundays.

Thank you to everyone who keeps this rescue moving.

The lesson from today appears to be clear:

Jo must stop sleeping.

Every time she tries, an emergency appears, fuel disappears, and another veterinary bill joins the growing collection.

Karen would like it officially noted that this keeps happening and she considers herself vindicated.

The animals have spoken. 😒🐾💙

If you would like to help us build a rescue that can handle these emergencies without robbing tomorrow's inspections to save today's lives, please consider supporting our sustainability programme through BackaBuddy.

Together we can make sure that when the next call comes, and it always does, we can simply say:

"We're on our way." 🚗🐕💨

😼 Sunday, 09:45am.

Chief Security Officer Jax has once again been caught sleeping on duty.

This time he wasn't even pretending to patrol. He was found fully tucked in, warm, comfortable, and snoring with the confidence of an employee who knows management can't afford to fire him.

When questioned about his lack of productivity, Jax stated:

"There have been no hoots at the gate, no emergency inspections required, no suspicious deliveries to investigate, and most importantly... no donations arriving for quality control. Under these conditions, I see no reason to be conscious."

He further advised that he will remain asleep until:

🐾 A donation appears that requires thorough sniff-testing
🐾 The humans stop making him work weekends

Until then, the Cat Angel Refuge Security Department remains technically operational, albeit horizontally.

Should anyone wish to give Jax a reason to wake up, donations can be delivered to:

📍 2 Vos Street, Zeerust

We apologise for the reduced level of vigilance. The entire security budget is currently taking a nap. 😹💤🐾

☕🐾 Our friends at Rescue Roast are at it again!

Now, we already love their coffee. In fact, the shelter coffee supplies are looking dangerously low at the moment. This is a hint. A very obvious hint. We are not subtle people. 😹

For the rest of June, while stocks last, Rescue Roast is being extra generous. Every qualifying 1kg bag sold means a whopping R100 goes directly to your chosen rescue.

And naturally we'd love it if your chosen rescue was Cat Angel Refuge. 🐱❤️

🟡 Look for the YELLOW or GREEN DOT ( #2 blends)
🔵 Look for the BLUE DOT ( #4 blends)

It's simple:

✅ Choose your favourite coffee
✅ Choose your favourite rescue
✅ Select Cat Angel Refuge
✅ Enjoy great coffee while helping animals in need

Every bag sold helps provide food, veterinary care, sterilisations, shelter, blankets, and occasionally enough caffeine to stop the rescue humans from staring blankly into space while wondering what fresh chaos the day will bring.

Want to spoil us even more? You can have your coffee delivered directly to us:

📦 Cat Angel Refuge

Because while the dogs appreciate food, the humans are mostly powered by coffee and questionable life choices.

Remember:
🟡 Yellow/Green Dot ( #2 blends)
🔵 Blue Dot ( #4 blends)

Choose Cat Angel Refuge at checkout and turn your coffee habit into animal welfare.

P.S. If you're kind enough to buy coffee for the shelter, please choose FILTER coffee, not beans.

We don't own a coffee grinder.

We grind our teeth, not beans.

Usually while reading electricity bills, vet accounts, and messages that begin with, "I found this puppy and can't keep it..."

The coffee should arrive ready for the kettle. The humans are already sufficiently ground down. ☕😹

The animals thank you.
The humans thank you.
The shelter kettle thanks you most of all.

☕🎉 It might be the long weekend endorphins...
Or perhaps we've had one too many cups of hot chocolate...

But we're feeling especially festive and a little extra generous today! 😄

For the rest of June, while stocks last, your favourite rescue gets a whopping R100 for every 1kg bag sold on selected Rescue Roast coffees! 🐾

And another huge thank you goes out to Zeerust Rugby Club. 🏉🐾

The club decided to collect dog and cat goodies for us and honestly, we were completely blown away.

Today, before their game, they handed over more than 300kg of food, treats, toys and blankets for the animals in our care.

To every player, supporter and person who contributed, thank you. You have no idea what a difference this makes. Every bag of food, every toy and every blanket means one less thing for us to worry about and one more animal that can be cared for properly.

Please support our local rugby team whenever you can, whether it's at home games or away matches. These men have shown that they are not just built for rugby scrums. They have enormous hearts too.

Of course, before anything could officially enter the refuge, Chief Quality Control Officer Jax conducted a full inspection. We suspect he was mainly checking whether any of the donations were edible and whether any toys were secretly intended for him. His report was lengthy, mostly drool-covered, and concluded that the donation was "acceptable."

Thank you, Zeerust Rugby Club. You scored points today that won't appear on any scoreboard, but they will be felt by every animal who benefits from your kindness. ❤️🐶🐱

Very overdue because the unpaid humans have been far too busy trying to keep the wheels on the rescue bus while it hurtles downhill with questionable brakes.

After the heartbreaking situation where we could not get a dog safely off the road in time, someone stepped in and sponsored something we desperately needed.

A rescue net.

Not just any rescue net. It had to be specially manufactured for us.

It has arrived.

It's here.

It's ready.

Ready for the next terrified dog, panicked cat, confused chicken, escape-artist goat, or possibly even wildlife that decides today is the perfect day to make poor life choices.

We hope we never have to use it.

But if that call comes in, we won't be standing there wishing we had better equipment. We'll be ready to act fast.

There are gifts that make life easier, and there are gifts that bring peace of mind. This is one of those gifts.

To the incredible person who made this possible: thank you will never feel like enough. You have given us another tool to help save lives and hopefully prevent another heartbreaking outcome.

The animals may never know your name, but the next one safely brought to rescue because of this net will be part of your legacy.

Now we're just waiting for Jax to inspect it. We expect he'll spend most of the inspection asleep on it.

13/06/2026

Jax, our usually sleeping-on-duty staff member, briefly woke up today, stretched dramatically, inspected absolutely nothing, and informed management that the awake-on-duty staff have posted a new needs list.

Apparently the animals remain stubbornly committed to eating every single day. We have repeatedly explained inflation to them. They remain unmoved.

Current needs:

🐾 Wet food for dogs and cats
🐾 Macaroni
🐾 Cat litter (wood or crystal)
🐾 Bread
🐾 Paper towels

The cats would also like it noted that empty food bowls are a human rights violation.

Donations can be delivered to:

📍 2 Vos Street, Zeerust

Or if you'd like to help from afar:

Every morning we carefully open the storeroom door to see whether the food has magically multiplied overnight. So far the miracle has failed to occur, although the paperwork continues breeding at an alarming rate.

The dogs are convinced somebody somewhere owns a money tree. We are beginning to suspect they are confusing it with a stick.

Jax has now returned to his official position as Head of Napping, Director of Quality Control, and Senior Supervisor of Watching Other People Work.

The awake-on-duty staff will continue attempting to keep hundreds of animals fed while maintaining the traditional rescue diet of caffeine, panic, and poor financial decisions.

As always, thank you to everyone who helps us turn donations into full bellies, wagging tails, clean litter trays, and one less migraine for the humans. ❤️🐾

🚨 A little truth from the frontlines of rescue work 🚨

We are a private rescue organisation.

We receive no funding from government or municipal departments.

We survive on donations, fundraising, and the kindness of our community. That's it.

Karen and I (Joanne) became Animal Welfare Inspectors not because it was easy, glamorous, or profitable, but because nobody else in the Zeerust area was willing to do it.

We carry Magisterial authorisation and cover the entire Ramotshere Moiloa area.

People often assume we have a large team behind us.

We don't.

While Karen and I are out attending complaints, conducting inspections, responding to emergencies, attending court matters, following up investigations, and generally trying to keep the wheels from falling off animal welfare, Luke mans the fort. Piet, Joshua, Ellias and Paulina help fill the gaps at the shelter and keep things running.

But the reality is that Karen and I still carry the majority of the workload.

The inspections.

The investigations.

The emergency call-outs.

The court preparation.

The administration.

The fundraising.

The veterinary runs.

The rescue coordination.

The complaint management.

And then there is the paperwork.

Sweet merciful paperwork.

Jo's natural predators are no longer snakes, spiders, or angry dogs.

They are forms.

Endless forms.

Forms that require other forms.

Forms that need signatures confirming previous forms were completed correctly.

Forms that require reports explaining why the forms were completed.

Forms that need filing before more forms can be issued.

If paperwork could be sterilised, we'd have solved the overpopulation crisis years ago.

Jo's natural habitat is now a mountain of files, half-drunk coffee, and a computer that trembles every time another complaint arrives.

We do all of this with limited resources, limited manpower, and a vehicle that occasionally sounds like it's filing a grievance against management.

Our complaint list is longer than our helper list.

We do what we can with what we've got. We triage. We prioritise. We make difficult decisions every day.

And yes, we must follow the law, even when the outcome isn't what everyone wants.

Please understand that when multiple WhatsApps, calls, voice notes, follow-up messages, and messages asking if we've seen the previous messages arrive, it takes time away from animals who may genuinely be in crisis.

We understand that your case matters to you.

But we're often juggling twenty or more others that matter just as much.

🐾 In a perfect world, every animal would sleep indoors.

🐾 In a perfect world, every owner would have access to veterinary care, fencing, food, and sterilisation.

🐾 In a perfect world, neighbour disputes wouldn't suddenly become urgent animal cruelty complaints the moment somebody falls out over a boundary line.

🐾 In a perfect world, Jo would open her laptop and discover fewer than seventeen new forms waiting for her before breakfast.

💔 Unfortunately, every false or exaggerated complaint takes time, fuel, resources, and attention away from an animal that genuinely needs help.

⚖️ How we resolve a situation may not always be to your personal liking, but it is done legally and within the scope of the Animal Protection Act.

We will not break the law.

We will not abuse our Magisterial authorisation.

And we will not remove animals simply because someone demands it.

🙏 What we ask for is understanding, patience, and support.

We're still here.

We're still answering the calls.

We're still doing the inspections.

We're still writing the reports.

We're still feeding the animals.

We're still trying to make a difference.

Some days fuelled by coffee.

Some days fuelled by stubbornness.

Most days fuelled by the animals who need us.

💙

10/06/2026

We are all about the steries, steries, steries. 🐾✂️

Today, two more animals from areas where we actively work were sterilised.

First up was Tiger from Ikalegeng Ext 3. Life is hard there. Most puppies don't make it to adulthood, and puppies are often seen as a source of income rather than family members.

This young man has now allowed animal number two to be sterilised. Rex was done last year, Tiger was done today, and next week his final female, Lady, will be done.

Baby steps.

Every visit is an opportunity to educate, explain, answer questions, and talk about why we insist on sterilisation. Sometimes it feels like we're talking to a brick wall. Sometimes it feels like we're talking to a slightly confused goat. Sometimes we're not entirely sure which of the two we're speaking to. 😅

But we're winning.

Not with grand speeches or magical rescue fairy dust.

With persistence.
With showing up.
With endless conversations.
And occasionally by becoming more stubborn than the people we're trying to convince.

One house at a time.
One conversation at a time.
One sterilisation at a time.

Next was a cat from the railway houses . His name is Hanametsi.

The railway houses are one of the toughest areas for us to break into. Trust takes time. Relationships take time. Showing up over and over again takes time.

So far we have managed to get animals sterilised at just three houses there.

To some people that sounds tiny.

To us, that's a breakthrough.

Three houses means three families willing to trust us.
Three houses means fewer unwanted litters.
Three houses means fewer kittens born under abandoned buildings only to become statistics.

His humans have very little. No fancy furniture. No luxuries. Not even a couch.

Yet somehow they are richer in love than many people with fully furnished lounges and matching scatter cushions.

Today their cat joined the ranks of our newest sports models and headed off for sterilisation.

Because sterilisations are not the only thing happening.

As a Rabies Centre of Excellence, every opportunity is also a chance to ensure rabies vaccinations are up to date.

Sterilise.
Vaccinate.
Educate.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

The glamorous life everyone thinks animal welfare is.

People imagine rescue work is cuddling puppies and kittens all day.

In reality it's explaining for the 47th time why male dogs should also be sterilised, trying to catch semi-feral cats, arguing with photocopied rumours from someone's cousin's neighbour's uncle, and surviving largely on caffeine, sarcasm and pure spite.

People often think animal welfare is about animals.

It's also about people.

People trying their best with very little.
People willing to listen.
People willing to trust.
People willing to learn.

Those are the victories that keep us going.

The puppy and kitten explosion wasn't built in a day, and it won't be fixed in a day either.

But today, one more dog and one more cat won't contribute to the endless cycle.

That's potentially hundreds of future puppies and kittens that won't end up hungry, abandoned, neglected, hit by cars, or keeping rescuers awake at 2am wondering how they're going to fit one more animal into a shelter that already resembles a furry version of rush-hour traffic.

A huge thank you to National Sterilization Project and their supporters. Without them, none of this would be possible.

Their belief in our tiny organisation, working far away from them, is creating real change in communities that many people never see.

They don't just fund sterilisations.

They fund prevention.
They fund education.
They fund rabies vaccinations.
They fund healthier communities.
They fund hope.

One animal at a time.
One family at a time.
One sterilisation at a time.

Slowly, quietly, and without much fanfare, lives are changing.

And somewhere tonight, two animals are wondering why everyone keeps calling them "sports models" while also refusing to explain where certain body parts disappeared to. ❤️🐾✂️

The Great Electricity Meter Conspiracy

Our electricity meter is a tiny, sadistic creature.

Every time we walk past it, it sits there happily flashing and blinking to let us know that the units are running out. Not a care in the world. No sympathy. No concern. Just a cheerful little electronic reminder that darkness is approaching.

Meanwhile, Chief of Operations, Jax, has lodged an official complaint.

His statement was brief:

"It's getting colder, humans. Fix it."

As Head of Sleeping, Snack Quality Control, and General Supervision, Jax would like to remind everyone that blankets are nice, heated beds are better, and electricity is what keeps the food prep area, lights, security systems, washing machines, puppy heating pads, and human servants functioning.

The meter is smiling.

Jax is not.

And while the adult animals can pile into beds, blankets, and occasionally on top of unsuspecting humans, our tiny baby puppies rely on heat to stay safe and snuggly warm through these cold winter nights. Their heating pads and warm bedding are not luxuries, they're necessities.

If anyone would like to help keep the lights on, the dogs warm, the cats comfortable, the baby puppies toasty, and prevent Jax from filing further workplace grievances, donations towards electricity are always appreciated.

🐾 Because apparently "everyone pile on Karen for warmth" is not considered a sustainable winter strategy. Especially not for the puppies.
