Children cannot consent.

That is why there is no such thing as “child po*******hy.”

For many survivors, that language can feel as though they were complicit in their own abuse rather than victims of it. The term minimizes the reality of what occurred and suggests a level of participation that a child is incapable of giving.

It can also normalize and sanitize the abuse by framing it as a category of po*******hy rather than what it truly is: the documented sexual abuse and exploitation of a child.

Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) more accurately reflects what these images and videos depict: the sexual abuse and exploitation of a child.

The language we use shapes how society understands harm, accountability, and victimization. When we name it accurately, responsibility remains where it belongs: with the offender, not the child.

Call it what it is: Child Sexual Abuse Material.

[WESTERN CAPE HIGH COURT SENTENCES CERES PA******LE TO FIVE LIFE TERMS AND 78 YEARS]

Western Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General (Adv) Thembisile Patekile lauds Ceres FCS detective Warrant Officer Anthony Rooy for his relentless pursuit of justice in the case of Leano Vergotine.

Vergotine committed a series of gruesome sexual offences between July and September 2022. He r***d and filmed two boys aged nine and 14 as well as a 16-year-old girl whom he physically assaulted during the act.

An 18-year-old female victim also opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm against him.

He was arrested and charged on five counts of r**e, two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, child po*******hy, grooming and contravention of the Film and Publication Act.

While handing down the sentence, the presiding officer declared the 42-year-old dangerous and a pa******le. He was sentenced to five life terms and an additional 78 years in prison without a possibility of a parole.
