WE REMEMBER UYINENE MRWETYANA
Today, as South Africa unites in the GBV shutdown on 21 November 2025, The Mandisi Tshingana Foundation stands in solemn remembrance of Uyinene Mrwetyana - a young woman whose life was tragically taken but whose spirit continues to inspire a nation.
Uyinene was more than a victim of gender-based violence; she was a beacon of hope, courage, and change. Her story awakened the conscience of South Africa, forcing us to confront the harsh realities that many women face daily. Her legacy is a call to action, reminding us that every woman deserves to live without fear, with dignity and respect.
Declaring GBV a national crisis is not only necessary - IT IS URGENT. It demands that society, government, and every individual recognise the devastating impact of violence on families and communities. GBV is not an isolated issue; it is a national emergency that touches all corners of our country regardless of race, class, or background. To honour Uyinene, we must enshrine protection, justice, and support for survivors as pillars of this fight.
On this day, we reflect not only on the pain and loss but also on the resilience and unity sparked by Uyineneβs story. Let her bravery inspire ongoing efforts to educate, protect, and empower. Together, we can ensure her memory endures through transformative action to end GBV in South Africa once and for all.
Her light shines on, urging us to build a safer, kinder, and more just nation where every woman and girl can realise her full potential - free from violence and fear. We commit to carrying her legacy forward, because the fight against GBV is a fight for all South Africans. ππππππ
