Shining Light on Ms. Ayanda Gwaji: A Pillar of Strength in Umlazi π
As we continue to celebrate the incredible women making huge differences in their communities, we would like to shine a spotlight on Ms. Ayanda Gwaji, the inspiring founder of Siza Community Care Center. A Community based organisation that has been operating in Umlazi for over 15 years β€οΈ π€
In the early 2000s, when the prevalence of HIV/AIDS was alarmingly high and care was scarce, hospitals were overwhelmed with patients, and there was a lack of treatment options. Ms. Ayanda saw a tremendous need for support and care. She felt compelled to take a stand as a woman, not only to provide care but to teach other women how to care for bedridden individuals. Especially as she noticed that many families lacked the proper knowledge to care for their loved ones.
During this time, stigma and misconceptions about HIV/AIDS was spreading uncontrollably. Many in the community even believed that looking at someone who was HIV-positive could transmit the virus. This deep rooted fear and lack of understanding became a driving force for Ms. Ayanda. She was determined to educate her community, dispel myths and spread awareness about how HIV is truly contracted, its signs and symptoms and how to properly care for those who are ill π· π.
From this passion, Siza Community Care was born. Through her tireless efforts, Ms. Ayanda developed workshops and training programs to educate the community about HIV/AIDS. She provided the tools and knowledge needed to care for the sick with dignity and compassion. As the epidemic continued to take its toll, leaving many children orphaned and vulnerable, Ms. Ayanda expanded Siza Community Careβs mission to provide support to those who were most affected.
Today, Siza Community Care stands as a testament to the power of community and the impact one woman can have. The organisation assists those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, chronic TB and addresses other social ills, including gender-based violence.
βHIV is here, Gender-Based Violence is here. We need to stand up and educate our communities,β Ms. Ayanda says.
Thank you, Ms. Ayanda, for your unwavering commitment to your community. Your courage, exemplifies the strength and resilience of women who lead with compassion ππͺπ½
