I have been asked if I do clean-ups at cemeteries. Unfortunately I don't, but it is avery valid question and topic.
The neglect that we see in our towns does not stop at pothole, water leaks or uncut grass. It goes into every aspect of our living space, even as far as the Cemeteries.
When last did you go to your local cemetry to pay respects to a fallen loved one? All Our Cemeteries have become a security hazard where nobody wants to go on their own. The people I know all arrange for friends or family to go with for protection.
The graves are all overgrown and in a lot of cases the graves are damaged. Some of them the headstones are just pulled over to brake and then just left.
Now the request was for someone or a company who can clean up the grave site, cut the grass and just clean the grave.
If we do have somebody on the group who do that, or will be able to help, please feel free to give us your name and contact number. I am sure the people will look for your details and contact you.

Good evening everybody.
Today is a good day in my books. Pine reported that they cut the grass today at Waterfall Park. As usual you can count on him to do as promised. THANK YOU PINE!!!
In one of my last posts I asked for help from a grass cutting company to enable us to cut the island from the Total Garage to Albertyn School Robot.
So far nobody responded, but I really STILL do need a reliable company to cut the grass. Uitenhage has a big problem when it comes to Maintaining public spaces and this stretch of road is one of Uitenhage's main entrances that needs Revitalising.
To all the gardening / grass cutting companies out there... Please reconsider your silence.
Uitenhage needs YOU!
IF THERE ARE MORE THAN ONE COMPANY THAT VOLUNTEERS YOU CAN DO IT EVERY OTHER MONTH. Then it will be less Strain on any one company.

Good evening everybody.
I am here today to make a request for help!
The Waterfall Park is in the final stages so the project needs to be the catalyst for change here in Uitenhage. What I want to do is tackling the island from The Total garage untill the robot at Albertyn school.
It will be an extension of the Waterfall Park area. Eventually the area untill the Corkwood Mall will be cleaned and with that ONE OF THE ENTRANCES into Uitenhage.
I am making a plea to the other Grass cutting companies in Uitenhage to reach out and join the group that is starting to make a dent in the negative vibe in Uitenhage.
What I am asking is that a few companies declare their intention to help 'I Love Uitenhage'. We can then get them to cut the area on a rotation basis.
That way it won't be that much on any one of them, because it cost a lot to help as a donation.
Pine is cutting the grass at the Waterfall Park monthly and I know it is a lot for one person so I can't expect him to also take on the next stage.
There are a lot more passionate people in Uitenhage, so my request is for a few of them to put up their hands and make a difference in Uitenhage.
If any of you knows a garden service/Grasscutting company, please plea to them to join our small band of merry men to stop the rot in Uitenhage.

Good evening everybody.
This morning I said I will post a few photos of the Queen Mary Hospital because I know I saw a few among the files from Eben.
What I didn't know was that they were all basically the same photo angle so they pretty much all look the same. I will put only THREE of them up with the hope to get more.
WHAT I ALSO FOUND is the story about how the Hospital came to be. It came in the form of a Herald Article from 23rd August 2007 by Ivor Markman.
"A little known connection exists between the wreck of the Amsterdam in 1817 and the creation of Uitenhage's first Hospital.
After the ship suffered severe damage the Crew were forced to run it aground at the now Amsterdamhoek.
When the Uitenhage residents heard about it Landdrost Cuyler and residents took wagons and went to their aid. The survivors were housed allover Uitenhage District. To raise funds the sulvaged items from the ship went up for sale.
Cuyler bought one of the cannons and took it to Uitenhage. The hill behind the Drostdy was used for surveillance and protecting Uitenhage. The cannon was never fired except on special occasions.
On 21st May 1900 such an occasion arised. The canon was to be fired. Charles Gross agreed to fire it, but he was delaid, because his little girl asked him to repair her bicycle's puncture.
When Gross got to the Hill nobody told him that the cannon had been fired already. He proceeded to load it and it went of as he was puching the ramrod down the barrel.
The explosion shatered the ramrod and a splinter entered his throat and a big piece severed his hand. Badly wounded dokters were attending to him, but they had to ruch him on a wheeled stretcher the station and then to the Port Elizabeth hospital where he passed away the next day.
The cannon accident emphasised the need for a hospital in town. Within a few years the new cottage hospital was built below Coronation Park and named the Queen Mary Hospital.
Unfortunately it was demolished in the 1950's. Today the site is occupied by Builders Express.

Good morning everyone.
In the last post a few of you mentioned Cowboy Mills. I then wnent looking and found a few photos which I will share just now.
But it also made me think back. We visited Cowboy Mills often on weekends. One of my Mother's fondest pictures is of Charles Jacobie sitting on the Pole fence, at Cowboy Mills, dressed in a white suit.
The other request was about the old Hospital in Cannon street. I will do that next time.

Good morning everybody.
The last few posts were more History than fixing Uitenhage, but that is also necessary, because how can we move forward if you don't know where you are coming from!
BUT ENOUGH OF THAT FOR NOW!
I am working on the NEXT PROJECT, it actually has 5 parts, but the Red Tape is a schlepp!
I get permission from the Municipality before I start on anything that belongs to them. But to just get hold of the person in charge of this department is a BIG problem.
Actually up to now I still have no certainty of which department is in charge of the Entrances leading into Uitenhage.
The Uitenhage Staff really couldn't tell me, but the one lady actually tried her best to find out and I got a name and E-mail address.
The only problem is that after almost 3 weeks I had no reply.
It could be that I wrote it down incorrectly or it is just a tipical municipality response when it comes to anything Uitenhage!
I NEED YOUR HELP... PLEASE!!!
Does any of you work in the Municipality, or know a senior person who does?
I need to pitch the Project to get permission to do something about our uninspiring Town Entances.
This is a multi-department project, because it would involve at least 3 Departments.
The one in charge of that piece of land, then the Engineers Department and Then the traffic Department.
Before I can talk to any of the other two departments I need the black and white proof, giving us the permission to explore the possibility of doing something.
So please help Me to get hold of the person in sharge.
ONCE WE HAVE THE PERMISSION WE WILL START A CLEANING PROJECT while all the planning is going on.
Up to now this has been a 'one man show', but I need your help.
I NEED A DOOR KICKED DOWN!!!
Once I have the permission We must talk about designs, plans, and fundraising to achieve the desired outcome.

Good evening everybody.
In a lot of my posts one question keeps comming up.
When do we do something about the brown building on the other side of the bridge in Stow Street, although google maps say it is Bubbs Avenue.
My answer to that is that it is not municipality property, but it belongs to the Railways. They have security staff at the station that does nothing about their property, they don't care. I haven't the money to fix it anyhow.
But something else came up now, something very interesting.
The photos from Eben delivered one more photo worth posting about.
The photo of that building shows only two stories and NOW it boasts three stories. SO WHEN WAS THAT 3rd STORY ADDED.?
Does anyone know what year that extention was made.?
You can clearly see on the photos I took today that the top floor was built in a different brick. So is there anyone on this group who knows?

I said the other day that I am looking for photos of the aviary and the cage where the Apes and other animals were kept.
Then I got the Name of Eben Beckley as a person who knows Uitenhage and it's history. I was told that he has a lot of info. Eben got al the info he possessed together and copied it for me and what a wide range of topics it covered. I am going to use two now in this post.
There will be more in the future. The next post will really put the older generation's memories to the test. THANK YOU again Eben for al your hard work that you entrusted to me.
Please look at the photos and tell me you are not touched by the degree in which Uitenhage has been neglected. Uitenhage had it all... And then it was left to run into ruins... A shadow of what this town was once, a not so long time ago.

The Waterfall Park is nearing completion and one off the last things that needs attention is all the potholes at the stop street.
I went to the Dentist yesterday and on my way back to the shop I saw a truck and a team busy fixing potholes.
Me, being Barend, stop there by them and thanked them for fixing the roads. I said that I also filled a few potholes. The driver said he knows. I then asked them to please attend to the potholes at the Waterfall Park in Bubbs Avenue. He said he will attend to it.
I honestly didn't think they will do anything so I didn't say anything about it.
What was my surprise when I went pass there after work today and saw that a lot of the potholes were filled.
Now I am sorry that I didn't ask for his name, but know this friend, you are a man of your word and your actions are highly appreciated.
Now see, this is what can happen if we take hands to make Uitenhage UITENHAGE again.
