Neal Bosman (Class of 1978) known to many as “Stukkie,” a nickname earned during his days in NC Dugmore House, Neal Bosman’s connection to Muir College runs deep through generations of family tradition and legacy.

Life at Muir
Neal attended Muir as both a boarder and later a day scholar, boarding in 1974 and 1975 before completing his final years from 1976 to 1978. Coming from a proud farming family, he was part of a remarkable Bosman legacy at Muir. At one stage, there were seven Bosmans at the school simultaneously — all boarders and mostly brothers or cousins — following in the footsteps of fathers, uncles, grandfathers, and great-uncles who had also worn the Muir uniform over the years. Sport played a significant role in his school life. Neal participated in cricket, hockey, tennis, and shooting, and in his younger years was also known for his speed on the athletics track as a 100m sprinter. While he admits he was “probably a cultural ignoramus” during his school days, he did take on informal leadership roles by captaining several sports teams. When asked about his fondest memory of school, his answer was simple and honest — school holidays!

Life After School
After leaving Muir, Neal completed his Honours degree in Industrial Psychology at UPE. Following his university studies and national service, he relocated from Port Elizabeth to Pretoria in 1986 to begin his career at Samcor. He later became IR Manager before taking the entrepreneurial leap in 1997 when Ford reinvested in the company. That same year, he established his own HR consulting business, Pro-Link Management Services, which continues to thrive today.

Life Today
Neal has called Pretoria home since 1986. He met his wife, Helen, while at university, and together they built a family with their two daughters, both of whom were raised in Pretoria and now live in London. Outside of work, Neal enjoys a wide range of outdoor and leisure pursuits, including shooting, hunting, reloading, fishing, boating, and golf — although he jokes that he’s often found “in the rough” on the golf course. He is also an avid reader with a strong interest in non-fiction literature. From a proud Muir legacy to building a successful career and family life, Neal’s journey reflects dedication, resilience, and a lifelong connection to the values and traditions of Muir College.

Ashley Williams (Class of 1974) recalls:

“I cannot recall the man’s name, but in 1973 (if my memory serves me correctly) we got this new PT teacher who had apparently played on the flank for Stellenbosch University. Since he was no oil painting, we named him ‘Frankie’ after Frankenstein. Well, Frankie had some weird ideas for PT, such as boxing. I remember having to fight Kevin Harvey who was quite a bit taller than me, but let’s say our contest was a draw. Then Frankie wanted to fight one of us. Since Dean was one of the tallest, he was promptly nominated. The Class of ‘74 was all cheering for Dean, but we did not know that Frankie was a university boxing champion! Dean put up a brave fight but could only hit the air while Frankie gave him some light punches. Sorry Dean, we gave that one to Frankie on points. Years later while at the Military Academy in Saldanha, I met Frankie again, he was the Sports Officer at Air Force Base Langebaanweg.”

Athenkosi Faku, known as “Dinky” during his early school years and later as “Bhuda FK,” attended Muir College as a day scholar. His time at Muir was marked by strong friendships, memorable moments, and a deep sense of loyalty and camaraderie.

Life at Muir
He was actively involved in Rugby, earning his 1st team blazer and demonstrating his commitment to the sport. He also took on leadership responsibilities, captaining the 2nd team under Mr Moodley, where the team proudly carried the nickname “VryStad.”

His fondest memories reflect the spirit of brotherhood that defines Muir. One standout moment involved him and fellow student Xhanti Makhubalo alongside a group of prefects, singing loudly in the quad. When confronted by Mr Francis, the group scattered and hid, but he and Xhanti chose to step forward and take responsibility to protect the others. Despite the risk of harsher consequences, he stood firm in his decision not to implicate his peers—an act that highlights his loyalty and character. The incident remains a humorous and meaningful memory from his school days.

Life After School
After leaving Muir, he pursued Sports Management at Boston City Campus. His career path led him into the hospitality and tourism industry, where he found his passion in nature and wildlife.

Life Today
He is currently an Assistant Lodge Manager at Amakhala Game Reserve (Bush Lodge), a role he has held for approximately six years. He enjoys the unique experience of working in the bush and regularly going on game drives, which continues to fuel his love for the environment.

Now based in Paterson, his hometown just outside Port Elizabeth, he remains grounded in family life. As the youngest in his family, he still enjoys the playful dynamics that come with it. He is a proud father to his son, Luphiwe Tize, who now attends Muir College, and his daughter, Avothando, who lives with him.

In his free time, he prioritises spending quality time with family and friends. Whether relaxing at home after his 21-days-on, 7-days-off work cycle, watching sports, or helping his daughter with homework, he values the simple moments that bring balance and joy to his life.

Last night, the OMU hosted its AGM at Walmer Golf Club in Gqeberha, where members gathered to reflect on the past year’s initiatives and discuss the exciting plans ahead for 2026.
We appreciate everyone who attended and contributed to the evening’s discussions. Unfortunately, a few members had to leave early and were not captured in the photos shared.

During the AGM, we acknowledged the resignations of committee members Jason Henman and Leo Doria, both of whom have served the OMU with dedication over many years. We sincerely thank them for their valuable contributions and lasting impact, and we wish them all the very best in their future endeavours.

We also proudly welcomed Faeez Karodia (Class of 2005) as a newly appointed committee member and look forward to his contribution to the OMU.

Overall, the AGM was well received, and we are excited for the year ahead — including the much-anticipated Founders’ Weekend taking place in August.

Calling All Old Muirites! 🏉

The Old Muirite Rugby Legends are calling for Old Muirites to join the Team.

Launched by the Old Muirite Union in 2022, the Legends were created to bring Old Muirites together through a shared love of rugby, camaraderie, and connection across generations.

The team’s inaugural match was a memorable exhibition clash against the SA Rugby Legends during Muir College’s historic 200-year celebrations in August 2022. Led by Muir College Springbok Garth Wright and coached by Robert Blignaut and Eric Tuck, more than 40 Old Muirites proudly pulled on the special 200-year commemorative jerseys.

Since then, the Legends have continued the tradition with three more exhibition fixtures — including two Founder’s Weekend encounters against Daniel Pienaar Old Boys and another against Westering High School Old Boys.

Whether you still lace up your boots regularly or haven’t played in years, this is about more than rugby — it’s about reconnecting, representing Muir, and enjoying the spirit of brotherhood once again.

Old Muirites aged 23 or older are invited to join the squad and become part of the next chapter of the Old Muirite Rugby Legends.

“Late one afternoon I had occasion to call on Anthony, a senior boarder in NC Dugmore House. I tapped on his door, and on receiving no response to further tapping, I opened it and entered the room. What I beheld was a rather sorrowful sight. Anthony was lying on his bed, looking quite ill; his face was unhealthily ruddy. Fever, I wondered? He just lay there with both hands behind his head, not attempting to get up in response to a teacher entering his room. Hors de combat, totally out of it, apparently unable to move without difficulty, quite floored (except of course that he was lying on his bed). I felt some concern.

"Anthony, what is the matter? Are you feeling ill?" He replied: "I’m… not…feeling well…Sir…"

The thought went through my head that I should call Matron, or help him to the sanatorium perhaps, when I saw something unexpected. A thin trickle of smoke was rising upwards from behind Anthony’s head, upon which I realised what was happening. I felt a moment of uncertainty about what to do next. I didn’t respond immediately one way or the other. I’ve never thought of myself as a sadist, but I’m not sure whether I was deliberately prolonging the poor lad’s discomfort or whether I was trying to decide what action to take. After some moments, however, I decided that Anthony had suffered enough anxiety during this episode, and that further punishment for infringing the rules of the hostel would be unnecessary.

I probably said something encouraging like hoping he would feel better soon, then turned around and exited the room. But I departed quite slowly, I remember, as I was feeling very tempted to drop a last comment that would (a) show Anthony that I wasn’t being taken in by his little charade, and (b) to make him sit up (not literally, at first) and wonder why he had been let off. The comment would have been something like this: ‘Oh, and Anthony, please take care that you don’t set either your hair or the building on fire.’

After I had returned to my own quarters, I felt a slight pang of regret that I hadn’t delivered this throwaway line. Ah well. As far as I remember, I never said anything to Anthony about it afterwards. So, he must have thought, “What a stroke of luck that he never saw the smoke!” Indeed!”

This episode was from an anecdote titled ‘Smoke Alert’ and appeared on page 163 of Shout Till The Rafters Ring.
