Today, November 21, 2025, Women For Change is leading a national shutdown in South Africa to raise awareness and demand action against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). This movement is calling for GBVF to be declared a national disaster, with demands including adequate funding for survivor support services, swift prosecution of perpetrators, and comprehensive education on consent and healthy relationships.

The statistics are stark: a woman is murdered every 2.5 hours in South Africa, with 15 women killed daily. This crisis affects not just women but the entire nation, making it a human rights issue.

You can show your support in various ways:
- Wear black as a symbol of mourning and resistance
- Change your social media profile picture to purple
- Join the 15-minute national standstill at 12:00 pm
- Refrain from spending money to demonstrate economic impact
- Amplify survivor voices responsibly
- Donate to local NGOs and community-led safety projects

President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged the dire situation. The G20 Women's Shutdown aims to pressure leaders to prioritize women's safety during the upcoming G20 Summit.

Let's stand together against GBVF and demand change

As TWYST Foundation, we are deeply shocked and outraged by the horrific r**e and murder of an 8-year-old child in kwaLanga. This senseless act of violence is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of our children and the need for collective action to protect them.

Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this unimaginable time. We condemn the perpetrator's actions in the strongest possible terms and we demand justice for the victim and her family.

We urge the authorities to conduct take concrete steps to prevent such heinous crimes in the future. No child deserves to suffer such brutality. Enough is enough! ‼️⛔

Today we remember the 20 000 (S)heroes who marched to the Union Buildings on 09 August 1956 to protest the pass laws. They paved the way for the women we are able to become today!πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

"We are women from every part of South Africa. We are women of every race. We come from the cities and the towns, from the reserves and the villages. We come as women united in our purpose to save the African women from the degradation of passes.” – Excerpt from the petition presented to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956.
