Today, November 21, 2025, Women For Change is leading a national shutdown in South Africa to raise awareness and demand action against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). This movement is calling for GBVF to be declared a national disaster, with demands including adequate funding for survivor support services, swift prosecution of perpetrators, and comprehensive education on consent and healthy relationships.
The statistics are stark: a woman is murdered every 2.5 hours in South Africa, with 15 women killed daily. This crisis affects not just women but the entire nation, making it a human rights issue.
You can show your support in various ways:
- Wear black as a symbol of mourning and resistance
- Change your social media profile picture to purple
- Join the 15-minute national standstill at 12:00 pm
- Refrain from spending money to demonstrate economic impact
- Amplify survivor voices responsibly
- Donate to local NGOs and community-led safety projects
President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged the dire situation. The G20 Women's Shutdown aims to pressure leaders to prioritize women's safety during the upcoming G20 Summit.
Let's stand together against GBVF and demand change
