The Pearston EYC had a fascinating visit to the Karoo Origins Fossil education centre and loved every minute of it! Taking classroom learning outside and into interactive, tactile and contextual spaces is proven to boost learning, spark further curiosity and engage learners in a way that is difficult to achieve in a classroom setting. Thank you Lindsay from the fossil centre for your knowledge and teaching of this important natural history!

On Saturday our Rheenendal, Kurland and Tsitikamma Eco Youth Circles joined Natures Valley Trust and leaders of the Inqua Royal Kingdom, to walk the paths of the Robberg Peninsula and explore some of its coastline. We experienced this exceptional place through stories, games and experiential learning - the stories being a highlight for many. Sitting in a cave and leaning back in time to remember and consider the generations of indigenous people who once lived in this area, their deep connection to the land and sea, and the ways in which natural resources were used sustainably to support communities over generations.
It wouldn’t be an EYC outing without free time to play and explore with friends from different communities! Thank you to everyone who helped get us all out into one of the most special places in the Garden Route!

It’s been a crazy time for some of our remote leadership team as storms ravaged the whole south coast. Bushmans Pillow which is our camp ground and also Carla our lead Coorindators home has had over twenty trees down and no reception or power for days, causing them to be stuck and in the Garden Route many of our EYC teams still have no power and minima reception! It’s not easy being a remote team and trying to make things work in these semi rural communities and even more so when communication goes down but we are rebuilding, strengthening our systems and our spaces and enjoying the sunshine after the storm! We have been thinking about all of those severely affected and struggling with damage and doing what we can to help those in need too. Everything will be back up and running very soon! A big lesson in adapting and figuring out how to navigate these sorts of extreme weather events.

There have been some amazing sporting achievements recently under the guidance of Cultural Connections sports coach Kayline who goes above and beyond to get her teams out there working in her own time with these youth who strive to do well in their respective sports. Her dedication to her teams is inspiring and we will be sharing more of their recent achievements soon! Positive vibes to you Kayline ✌️respect!

Stress affects every one of us, in times of high stress it’s difficult to remember to slow down in moments and look up. When we look to nature we can find beauty everyday despite all that is happening in our human world, taking time to pause and take a few deep breaths can change the tone of your whole day!

A reminder from the Groot Karoo.

Multi relationship projects , many people, overlapping systems - they all have complex challenges and require systems thinking to constantly zoom in and out to get different views. We value systems thinking, critical questioning and try to encourage everyone in Cultural Connections to learn the practice of zooming in and out!

Learning through play is a pedagogical approach where children explore, discover, and make sense of the world, supporting cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. It uses natural curiosity to build skills like creativity, problem-solving, and resilience. And best of all - ITS FUN! Aunty C is the passionate, bright homework and reading facilitator at the Pearston club who has been exploring some of these creative methods.

The ants in Pearston can be intense, boiling out from the earth before the rains and finding feet to nibble on causing many of us to scamper too and fro but they are also such community orientated creatures with highly complex social behaviours.

Did you know Ants are incredibly strong, capable of lifting 10–50 times their body weight, and exist on every continent except Antarctica?

We stood together in the veld recently witnessing this colony moving seeds into their ant hill and they managed so much better when they helped one another - in made us think of us, so often trying to solve complex issues alone but when we work together we are so much more effective.

Introducing the Pearston Creative Foundation phase playbook! 🎉 created by and this invaluable resource is being trialled in literacy lessons in Pearston!

During the first training session that took place a few weeks ago, the literacy practitioners learned how to navigate within the playbook, to take photos, videos, and to access the stored resources. They also completed two activities in the teacher guide and created a teacher reflection collage for the front page of the learning journals they will be keeping. The playbook and teacher guide work together to provide the literacy practitioners with an interactive learning experience that is designed to expand their teaching pedagogy. Through watching the video’s and completing the activities, the practitioners will gain instructional knowledge, classroom management skills, and creative teaching strategies.
The next training session is in May, where the literacy practitioners will present the lessons that they have designed to be included in the second addition of the playbook so that the resource becomes a collaborative one!
