With hope in their hearts and unity in their steps, members of the Vhembe Disability Forum, under the leadership of Mr Makhanthisa T, marched yesterday, 21 August 2026 to Thulamela Municipality.

They went to submit a memorandum not just on paper, but carrying the daily struggles, dreams and voices of persons living with disabilities in Vhembe.

This time, the government must truly hear and take action to build a community where everyone belongs.

Where is inclusivity?

Imagine marching to a government building to have your voice heard, only to discover that there is no sign language interpreter available.

Imagine having to fight for your rights while the very institution meant to serve and protect you cannot even provide the basic support needed for you to participate.

How heartbreaking is that?

Sadly, this is the reality faced by many people living with disabilities in South Africa. Their voices are too often overlooked, their needs pushed aside and their rights treated as though they are optional.

Inclusivity is not a favour. Accessibility is not a privilege. And equal rights should never depend on whether someone can hear, see, walk or communicate in the same way as everyone else.

Every person deserves to be heard, respected and included especially in the places where decisions about their lives are being made.

South Africa deserves an inclusivity that is not merely spoken about, but seen, practised and protected. 🇿🇦
