𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬.

The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, through the Department of English, Media Studies and Linguistics at the University of Venda, conducted a Media and Information Literacy Community Engagement Outreach at Andries Mugaguli High School on 18 June 2026.

The outreach programme focused on addressing the growing challenges of cyberbullying, misinformation, and unsafe digital behaviour among learners in the digital age. Learners were engaged on how harmful online conduct, including harassment, sharing of false information, and irresponsible use of social media, can negatively affect their wellbeing, reputation, and academic performance.

The presentations were delivered by Media Studies students from the University of Venda, followed by an interactive discussion where learners openly reflected on their own experiences with social media and online safety challenges.

The outreach formed part of the University of Venda’s commitment to strengthening digital literacy, promoting safe online practices, and empowering young people with the knowledge to navigate the media environment responsibly and critically.

The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education proudly celebrates 𝐃𝐫 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐥𝐨 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐢, makhadzi of the Mukula Royal Family, recognised for her unwavering commitment to the preservation and advancement of cultural heritage.

Dr Takalani matriculated at Mbilwi Secondary School and later pursued her academic journey at the University of Venda, where she enrolled for a 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞, majoring in English, Political Studies, and Public Administration. She subsequently completed a 𝐁𝐀 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, reflecting her dedication to academic excellence and professional growth. She further obtained a 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧(PGCE), strengthening her professional teaching qualifications and commitment to education.

Motivated by a passion for education and community development, Dr Takalani began her professional journey as a 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫, where she developed a strong foundation in teaching, communication, and learner support. She later expanded her experience in the retail sector, working at a gift shop, an opportunity that further strengthened her interpersonal and administrative competencies.

Her career progressed when she joined the 𝐓𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭 at the University of Venda as an Administrative Clerk. During this period, she developed a deep interest in Tshivenda language development, lexicography, and indigenous language scholarship. This growing passion inspired her to further strengthen her linguistic expertise by completing Tshivenda Levels 1, 2, and 3 alongside her academic studies.

Driven by academic curiosity and professional dedication, Dr Takalani went on to complete a 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞, enhancing her knowledge in language planning, terminology development, and dictionary compilation. Through consistent hard work and expertise in lexicography, she was promoted to 𝐃𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫 at the Tshivenda National Lexicography Unit. Her leadership, scholarly contribution, and commitment to language development ultimately led to her appointment as 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫-𝐢𝐧-𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 of the Unit.

Her academic journey reflects perseverance, lifelong learning, and an unwavering dedication to the promotion, preservation, and development of the Tshivenda language. She has now successfully obtained her 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐲 (𝐏𝐡𝐃) 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 from the University of Venda under the supervision of 𝐃𝐫 𝐒. 𝐋. 𝐓𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐤𝐨𝐭𝐚 and 𝐂𝐨-𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐫 𝐌. 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢.

Her doctoral research is titled:

The study found that learners experience difficulties in Mathematics due to language barriers, limited guidance, inadequate resources, and insufficient mathematical terminology. It further revealed that Tshivenda bilingual dictionaries play a significant role in improving conceptual understanding by clarifying mathematical terminology, expanding learners’ vocabulary, and supporting bilingual learning approaches. However, the study also highlights a shortage of appropriately developed Mathematics dictionaries, particularly for use in the Foundation Phase.

The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education proudly celebrates 𝐃𝐫 𝐊𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐚𝐭𝐣𝐚 on obtaining her 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐮𝐦 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬) degree from the University of Venda.

Born in the Success Section of Ga-Mathabatha, Dr Manyatja began her educational journey at Mokolobane Primary School before completing her secondary education at Mogaputji Secondary School. Following matriculation, she pursued a 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 at EWC Kempton Park. Her passion for education led her to further her studies, obtaining a 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐄𝐓) and an 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐮𝐦 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 from the University of Limpopo, followed by a 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐮𝐦 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 from Tshwane University of Technology. Her academic journey has now culminated in the attainment of a 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚. Dr Manyatja began her teaching career at Matsimela High School, where she taught Sepedi Home Language, Geography, and Social Sciences from 2015 to 2022. She later served at Mosepedi High School before joining the University of Venda in 2023 as an nGAP Lecturer, a position she currently holds.

Her doctoral research focused on | 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐥𝐲 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬. The findings of the study contribute significantly to improving the quality of teaching and learning, particularly within rural and under-resourced communities. The research also supports the preservation and promotion of Sepedi Home Language by ensuring that educators are adequately prepared to teach it effectively.

The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education proudly celebrates 𝐃𝐫 𝐍𝐠𝐚𝐝𝐢 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐞 on obtaining her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Arts and Social Sciences. This remarkable achievement reflects a journey of passion, perseverance, and a deep commitment to youth development and education.

Dr Rankakane was born and raised in Eldorado Village under Blouberg Local Municipality in the Capricorn District. Her academic journey began at the University of Venda, where she obtained a 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, followed by 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, She later completed a 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 at STADIO and proceeded to pursue her PhD in Arts and Social Sciences.

Along her academic journey, she also contributed to teaching and learning as a facilitator and assessor at TSP College, a tutor in the Department of Youth in Development at the University of Venda, and later as a part-time lecturer in the same department while completing her doctoral studies. She is currently serving as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU), University of Cape Town.

Her passion for education and youth development inspired her to pursue doctoral studies. From a young age, she dreamed of advancing her education, a vision strengthened during her master’s studies where she developed a deep interest in research and academia.

Her PhD research focused 𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬, 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

The study examined community-based youth development programmes targeting high school learners and assessed their effectiveness in fostering entrepreneurial thinking and skills. The findings revealed systemic challenges affecting programme effectiveness, despite their contribution to developing essential soft skills.
