An evening of elegance, celebration, and meaningful connections as the University of Venda brought together distinguished guests, university leadership, partners, and stakeholders for the Internationalisation Gala Dinner.

Held under the theme “Celebrating Partnerships, Global Engagement and Institutional Impact,” the evening highlighted the importance of strengthening strategic partnerships, fostering international collaboration, and building meaningful relationships that contribute to the university’s global footprint.

The programme featured welcome remarks, reflections on the role of government in promoting internationalisation, and a keynote address by Dr Pulane Modiha, COO: Home & Structured Lending at First National Bank, who shared insights aligned with the evening’s theme. The celebration also provided an opportunity to recognise the collective efforts that continue to advance international engagement and institutional development.

Beyond the formal programme, the evening created space for networking, entertainment, and the strengthening of relationships that support a shared vision for a globally connected University of Venda.

A truly memorable evening celebrating the partnerships that open doors, the collaborations that create opportunities, and the shared ambitions that shape the future of internationalisation.

Another key session during the UNIVEN Annual Internationalisation Week focused on “Internationalisation at Home and Global Learning: Creating a Globally Engaged UNIVEN Campus.”

The session explored how internationalisation can be integrated into the everyday university experience, ensuring that students and staff can engage with global perspectives and develop the knowledge, skills and intercultural awareness needed to thrive in an interconnected world.

The discussions focused on several important areas, including:

📚 Internationalisation of the Curriculum — exploring how global perspectives can be incorporated into teaching, learning and the academic experience.

🌍 Intercultural Competence & Global Citizenship — highlighting the importance of developing students who are able to engage respectfully and effectively across different cultures and global contexts.

🤝 Community-Engaged Internationalisation — examining how internationalisation can extend beyond the university and contribute to meaningful engagement with communities.

🏘️ Strategic Partnerships & Community Engagement — looking at how partnerships can be strengthened through community engagement to create meaningful institutional impact.

🏛️ Internationalisation & Local Development — considering the role of UNIVEN’s internationalisation agenda in supporting broader local development priorities.

The session reinforced an important message: internationalisation is not only about studying or travelling abroad. It can happen right here at UNIVEN — through the curriculum, classroom interactions, community engagement, cultural exchange, global learning and the development of globally engaged graduates.

One of the major highlights of the UNIVEN Annual Internationalisation Week was an engaging Panel Discussion featuring Faculty Deans and representatives from across the faculties , who came together to reflect on the importance of internationalisation in higher education and its role in advancing the University of Venda’s institutional agenda.

The panel provided a valuable platform for faculties to share perspectives on how internationalisation can be integrated into teaching and learning, research, innovation, partnerships and community engagement, while creating opportunities for students and staff to connect with the global academic community.

The discussion highlighted that internationalisation is not only the responsibility of the Directorate of International Relations and Partnerships, but is a shared institutional responsibility that requires active participation across faculties and academic disciplines.

Through collaboration, global partnerships, international mobility, knowledge exchange and research networks, UNIVEN continues to explore ways of strengthening its local relevance and global standing.

The participation of faculty leadership demonstrated the importance of placing internationalisation at the heart of the University’s broader institutional development and ensuring that its benefits reach students, academics, researchers and the communities UNIVEN serves.

Mr Ted Xiong from the Green Technology Confucius Institute shares insights into the wide range of opportunities available through international engagement with China, including opportunities for students and staff to learn, connect, travel and gain international experiences.

Day 2 of UNIVEN Internationalisation Week kicks off with Seipati Maboya and Mr Jake Goshert from the U.S. Embassy, sharing insights into international opportunities available to students and academics.

The session highlights the Fulbright Scholarship Programme and other opportunities that support study, research, academic exchange and professional development in the United States. Participants gain valuable information on available programmes and how they can position themselves to access these global opportunities.

The University of Venda’s Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, through the Department of Human Sciences, joined the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture – Mopani District, stakeholders and cultural enthusiasts at the Xirimelo Heritage Celebration 2026.

The celebration brought together individuals and institutions to honour, preserve, and promote South Africa’s rich cultural heritage. It highlighted the importance of heritage education, conservation, and passing cultural knowledge to future generations.

The event provided an opportunity for meaningful academic and community engagement, reinforcing the collective responsibility to safeguard our cultural identity and heritage.
