Open Arms SA

Open Arms SA Are you pregnant or a birth mother? Open Arms SA is here to help and advise you so you can make an informed decision for yourself and your baby.

Open Arms SA is a project of Isiaiah 54 Children's Sanctuary in Durban, a crisis home for abused, abandoned and HIV infected babies and children. I started this project because I am very concerned about the number of babies that are abandoned in the street, bins, bushes etc. I know that sometimes the step to the welfare is very high and it takes up to much time, what most of the mother don't have

as the are in a panic and need to get out of the situation as soon as possible. But abandoning your baby is a crime and besides that, it is not good for the baby. We must always keep in mind that the baby never chose to be born and we need to do what is the best for baby and the mother. Handing your baby over or giving it up for adoption is not being a careless mother and bad to do, it even makes you more of a good mother. Because you know that you cannot give the baby what it deserves, and by giving it up for adoption you are able to give your baby a future by a forever family. Never think that you are a bad mother by making this choice, you would be a bad mother if you didn't make this choice knowing you cannot look after baby and give it what is deserves, a stable, loving life and a future with lots op opportunities. Don't be afraid to contact me, I am here to help not to judge you. You can contact me:

Join us.

Not for noise.
Not for politics.
But for the babies who never got a second chance.

Join us for a peaceful march in support of Baby Savers and Safe Relinquishment in South Africa.

For the first time, all 5 Baby Savers in KZN are standing together.
Not because it’s easy…
But because we are tired of seeing what happens when there is no safe option.

We have held the babies who made it.
And we have buried the ones who didn’t.

This march is for every mother who felt she had no way out.
For every child who deserved to be found safe… not too late.

📍 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁: Whale Bone Pier, Umhlanga Promenade
🕜 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲: Gather at 1:30PM | March starts at 2:00PM
🚶‍♀️ 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲: Less than 3km – a gentle, family-friendly walk

This is a peaceful, safe march.
Prams are welcome. Families are welcome. Everyone is welcome.

Parking is available at The Pearls and Oceans Mall.

Come stand with us.
Stand for awareness.
Stand for safe options.
Stand for lives that still have a chance.

The baby saver opened around 9pm.
A little boy was left behind.
About 18 months old.
This was 10 days ago.

He was old enough to know his mother wasn’t there.
Old enough to feel it in his bones.

He didn’t cry.
He didn’t fight.
He just lay there, frozen, like his world had collapsed and he had no idea why.

He was clean. He smelled good.
And that, that’s what breaks you.

Someone fed him.
Someone bathed him.
Someone held him close.
And then, someone walked away.

It was nearly Christmas.
A mother went to bed that night without her child.
No lights. No laughter.
Just absence. Just heartbreak.

If you are a mother right now, in Durban or anywhere in South Africa and you are thinking of leaving your baby in the rain, on the street, in a bin, or alone in someone’s yard, please stop.

Especially now, with these hectic rains in our province.
A baby left unsafely in this weather is a baby we might not save in time.
Rather choose the baby saver, it's safe, baby will be found in seconds.

And please, if you can:
• Leave a note with the baby’s full name and date of birth
• Mention if the baby is on any medication
• If possible, include the clinic card, just tear off the part with your details
• Medical information is not a luxury, it can save a life

You don’t have to leave your story.
You don’t have to explain yourself.
This is a last resort option but better than leaving baby unsafely.

A December Mommy’s Story

She is 26 years old.
And on the 3rd of December, she brought a perfect little girl into the world, a tiny heartbeat wrapped in hope, a daughter she loves with every corner of her tired soul.

But love, on its own, doesn’t pay rent.
It doesn’t stretch food.
It doesn’t make space appear where no space exists.

Right now, she is sharing a single room with her cousin and her cousin’s husband, three adults and now soon a newborn, the air already thin, the cupboard already empty.
She has overstayed.
They are struggling.
And she knows it.

A family member offered to “help,” but with a price no mother should ever have to pay.
Give me the baby, but you cannot see her.
Return only when your life is perfect again and even then, you must repay me first.

That isn’t help.
That is heartbreak in a different shape.
And she walked away from that option with tears burning in her throat.

She loves her daughter.
She truly does.
But she has no job, no secure place to stay, no support system stepping in, no one holding her hand while the world shakes under her feet.

The social workers at the hospital, they nod, they listen, but they do not move.
Excuses.
Delays.
Doors that will not open.
She feels like she is drowning with her baby in her arms.

And while the rest of us are decorating trees,
planning meals, rushing for gifts, she is simply trying to breathe.
Trying to choose the safest path in a life that has never offered her an easy one.

She is not a bad mom.
She is not “giving up.”
She is a mother with love in her chest
and no ground beneath her feet.

She needs:
• A safe place to stay
• A job
• Gentle guidance
• A chance
• Someone to listen
• A little time to stand up again
• And the reassurance that she is not walking this alone.

There are so many mothers like her,
quietly breaking, quietly trying, quietly hoping someone will see them before it’s too late.

Tonight, before you sleep,
keep her in your heart.
Because while the world is celebrating,
she is simply trying to survive and still be a mother worth remembering.

THANK YOU

Our hearts are overflowing.
In just a short time, our community came together and raised the full R2 500 needed for Mandla’s mommy to do her DNA test. ❤️

Because of you, your kindness, your generosity, your compassion, a mother is now one step closer to being reunited with her baby boy.
You didn’t just give money, you gave hope, dignity and a fighting chance for a family to be made whole again.

To every single person who shared, donated, prayed or simply held this story in their heart, thank you.
You reminded us that humanity is still good, that we stand together when it matters and that love truly moves mountains.

We will keep you updated as we walk this journey with Mandla’s mommy and our social worker.
But for now, please know this:

You made a miracle possible today.
From all of us and from one very grateful mother, thank you.

On the 5th of September, a mother made one of the bravest and most heartbreaking decisions a woman can make, she placed her tiny baby boy in our Baby Saver.
Some of you may remember him, a beautiful, healthy little boy, about 2–3 weeks old. We named him Mandla “strength.”

Today, we have the most incredible news.
Mandla’s mommy has reached out. She wants Mandla back in her arms.
And that is where he belongs, with her. A family finding its way back to each other. ❤️

We are working closely with a wonderful social worker who also believes reunification is the best and safest option. But before this miracle can happen, a few things need to be in place:
• A safe and stable place for her to stay
• A permanent job
• A support system
• And most importantly a DNA test to confirm that she is indeed Mandla’s mom

The DNA test costs R2 500 and for a young mom trying to rebuild her life, this is a mountain.
We want to help her climb it.

Every single rand brings Mandla one step closer to being held in his mother’s arms again.
Every little contribution helps a family reunite.
Every donation is a piece of hope.

If you’re able to help, please send your contribution via EFT:

Thank you for standing with us, for believing in second chances and for helping a mother fight her way back to her child.
This is what love in action looks like. 🩷

Today, Open Arms SA stands still.
I stand for every woman who didn’t survive Gender-Based Violence and for every women still fighting to stay alive, stay heard and stay safe.

Every day I walk alongside women in crisis, women carrying pregnancies alone, carrying fear, carrying shame, carrying danger.
But today, we also carry their voices.

If women stop, this country stops.
Mothers can’t shut down… but imagine if they did.
No one would hold families, communities, or futures together.

Enough is enough.

Open Arms SA stands with every woman who feels unseen, unheard, or unsafe.
We fight for better options, safer choices and a South Africa where women are allowed to live.

Child abandonment is real.
Not just a made-up story.
Every single day, mothers across South Africa face desperate, terrifying moments, alone, unsupported and afraid.
Abandoning a baby is never an easy choice.

Another baby has been found abandoned, thankfully this little one is alive.
But how many more babies need to be abandoned before DSD Gauteng sees how broken our system is and how urgently safe relinquishment laws and baby savers are needed right now?

We can’t stay silent.
We can’t lose another baby because of inaction.

Please take a few minutes to email your submission and stand with us in support of the Safe Relinquishment Private Members Bill (PMB) from the DA.
Your voice matters, it can help save lives.

Use this message or write your own:

Subject: Strong Support for the Safe Relinquishment Private Members Bill (PMB)

Dear Speaker, Portfolio Committee & Stakeholders,

I am writing in full support of the Safe Relinquishment Private Members Bill (PMB).

This Bill offers a compassionate, legal, and life-saving alternative to unsafe abandonment. It:
• Protects vulnerable babies from harm
• Recognises the operation of registered baby savers and safe havens
• Prevents mothers in crisis from being criminalised for acting responsibly

No child should be left in danger.
No mother should face punishment for choosing safety.

I urge you to pass the PMB without delay and strengthen clauses that:
• Clearly define safe relinquishment
• Protect baby saver organisations from legal risk
• Ensure anonymity and non-prosecution for mothers in crisis

This is about dignity, protection, and second chances.

I fully support the PMB.

Let’s make South Africa a place where every baby survives and every mother has options.

Sincerely,
