We are honoured to have received the SME of the Year 2026 award at the Standard Bank Free State Business Awards. This achievement is a meaningful recognition of our entrepreneurial journey, resilience, commitment to sustainable business growth and contribution to the green economy.

🌍 SiAWECCA South African Women Entrepreneurs Climate Change Awards 2026

We were also honoured to receive recognition at the South African Women Entrepreneurs Climate Change Awards (SiAWECCA), where I had the privilege of representing the Free State Province. Being recognised on a platform that celebrates women entrepreneurs contributing to climate action and environmental sustainability is an achievement I deeply value.

These milestones represent more than awards. They reflect the hard work, determination and vision behind building an environmentally responsible enterprise in a sector that is essential to our future.

At Boikanyo Lesedi Environmental Waste Management, our work goes beyond waste collection and recycling. We are committed to advancing the circular economy, creating green economic opportunities, empowering communities, supporting waste pickers and developing sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.

Our journey has not always been easy. Like many growing enterprises, we have faced challenges, learned valuable lessons and continued to push forward, driven by the belief that waste management can create both environmental value and economic opportunity.

I am grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey — our team, partners, clients, community members, waste pickers and stakeholders who continue to support our vision. Every contribution has played a role in bringing us to this point.

As we celebrate these achievements, we remain focused on expanding our impact, strengthening partnerships, embracing innovation and building a business that contributes meaningfully to South Africa’s green economy.

Boikanyo-Lesedi Environmental Waste Management is a circular-economy business that takes waste that would otherwise end up in landfills and turns it into valuable materials, while creating jobs, developing skills and empowering communities.

Its bigger purpose can be summed up as:

Partnership Between Boikanyo Lesedi Environmental Waste and Seriti Institute NPC

GreenWorks Recycling Programme – Matjhabeng Local Municipality

Partnership Overview

Boikanyo Lesedi Environmental Waste Management has partnered with the Seriti Institute through the GreenWorks Recycling Programme to empower and develop 200 young participants across all six towns of Matjhabeng Local Municipality: Welkom, Virginia, Odendaalsrus, Hennenman, Ventersburg and Allanridge.

The partnership combines Seriti Institute’s youth-development and green-economy expertise with Boikanyo Lesedi’s practical experience in recycling, waste management, material recovery and environmental education. Through this collaboration, young people will gain the knowledge, practical skills and support needed to participate meaningfully in the local green economy.

The programme will provide the 200 participants with practical exposure to waste separation, collection, sorting, recycling, environmental awareness and green-enterprise opportunities. It will also promote employment readiness, entrepreneurship, leadership, teamwork and community participation, enabling young people to pursue sustainable livelihoods and become active environmental champions in their communities.

The programme is expected to deliver measurable environmental benefits across the six Matjhabeng towns, including increased waste separation and recycling, reduced illegal dumping and littering, improved recovery of recyclable materials, cleaner public spaces and greater community awareness of responsible waste management. By diverting recoverable materials from disposal and returning them to productive use, the initiative will help conserve resources and reduce the environmental impacts associated with waste.

Boikanyo Lesedi acts as the practical recycling and environmental implementation partner, while Seriti Institute provides the broader youth-development and community programme framework. Together, the organisations are strengthening the local recycling value chain and creating opportunities for young people to contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable local economy.

The initiative supports the transition to a circular economy by treating waste as a valuable resource rather than an end product. It will encourage the recovery, reuse, recycling and reintegration of materials into the economy, while supporting green enterprises, local value creation and sustainable livelihoods. The participation of 200 young people will help build a pipeline of skilled youth capable of driving innovation, enterprise development and long-term circular-economy practices in Matjhabeng.

Ultimately, the partnership aims to establish a network of young environmental champions across Welkom, Virginia, Odendaalsrus, Hennenman, Ventersburg and Allanridge. These participants will help drive behavioural change, improve environmental conditions, strengthen recycling systems and contribute to inclusive green economic development throughout Matjhabeng Local Municipality.
