A WHOLE COMMUNITY HELD ITS BREATH FOR BABY DUSTIN.
HOPE ARRIVED AT 14:20.
Platinum Bushvelder newspaper | Thabazimbi, Northam – The arrival of a baby is always special, but for the Gilau family, and much of the Thabazimbi and Northam communities, little Dustin Quintin Gilau Jnr’s birth became a story of hope, prayer and incredible relief.
Born on Saturday, 13 June 2026 at 14:20, Dustin Jnr made his long-awaited entrance into the world weighing 3.46kg and measuring 54cm in length. His proud parents, Quintin Gilau and Michelle Edwards, could finally hold their son after hours of uncertainty and emotional strain.
At home, three excited siblings – Heino Marais (10), Skylar Rene Gilau (6) and Christopher Tyler Gilau (5) – eagerly awaited the arrival of their new baby brother.
The day began before sunrise when Michelle started experiencing contractions shortly before 06:00. With her pregnancy classified as high-risk, concern quickly turned into urgency when her water broke shortly thereafter. As the family waited for assistance, Quintin turned to local community groups for advice and support. What followed was remarkable.
Residents from across Thabazimbi and Northam rallied around the family, offering guidance, encouragement and prayers as they followed the unfolding story.
With contractions becoming stronger and help still on the way, Quintin found himself preparing for a situation few parents ever imagine – the possibility of having to deliver his own baby at home. Despite the mounting pressure, he remained focused on keeping Michelle and their unborn son safe.
Fortunately, emergency services arrived in time and Michelle was safely transported to hospital. Members of Thaba Fire and Rescue supported the family throughout the long night and early morning hours, helping them navigate a tense and emotional wait.
But even after Dustin’s safe arrival, the family’s ordeal was not yet over.
Shortly after giving birth, Michelle suffered severe bleeding and had to be rushed into theatre. At the same time, newborn Dustin initially struggled to breathe. For a period, the family faced some of the most frightening moments of their lives.
“It was stress upon stress,” Quintin recalled. “With the high-risk pregnancy we were incredibly worried. There were so many emotions throughout the labour process, and the tension afterwards was unbelievable. But we feel incredibly relieved and truly blessed.”
By approximately 16:30, both mother and baby had stabilised, allowing the family to finally breathe a collective sigh of relief.
Michelle and little Dustin were discharged from hospital the following day and returned home to a joyful family eager to welcome their newest member.
For the Gilau family, 13 June will forever be remembered as a day that tested their courage, faith and resilience. Yet it will also be remembered as the day an entire community stood alongside them – proving that in times of uncertainty, kindness, prayer and support can make all the difference.
What began as a day filled with worry ended with a precious new life, grateful hearts and a community celebrating together the safe arrival of little Dustin Quintin Gilau Jnr.
