SPOTLIGHT SUNDAY

This Sunday we shine a spotlight on Janet Burnside Soga, Rev Tiyo Soga's wife.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and missionary partner to Rev. Tiyo Soga. Born in Scotland in 1835, she married Rev. Soga and returned to South Africa with him in 1857. Janet supported her husband's ministry, cared for their seven children, and was involved in community development initiatives, teaching local women skills like sewing and needlework. Her legacy is one of love, dedication, and service, leaving a lasting impact on her family and community. Her selflessness and compassion are an inspiration, highlighting the important role women played in shaping South Africa's history.

Let's recap from our last episode (39. Building the Church - Episode 5):

Rev. Tiyo Soga took on the massive task of overseeing the construction of the church, despite having no experience. He faced numerous challenges:

1. Managing labourers who were unskilled for the task.
2. Ensuring that there was a constant supply of materials like bricks and stones from the quarry.
3. Dealing with the uncertain weather on production and stone quarrying.
4. Meeting the high expectations of the people and the Church and to avoid failure.

Despite struggling with poor health, including asthma, severe colds, and bronchitis, Rev. Soga persevered, driven by his determination to complete the church.
