Nearly 60% of South Africans don’t have a single book at home, according to a 2016 survey by the South African Book Development Council. What's even more disheartening is that according to the latest ECD Census Report, only 56% of ECD centres have age appropriate books.

We applaud the amazing work that our friends and partners, Book Dash, Read to Rise help2read and Room to Read are doing to close the literacy gap.

We are so inspired by the impact Finding Thabo is having on parents, teachers and children across the country.

Finding Thabo is an interactive play-based game designed to stimulate key parts of the brain and build foundations for lifelong learning, and enables children to learn by interacting with the beautiful posters. Parents, teachers and caregivers can engage with children by reading the prompts via WhatsApp or Facebook messenger.

This video explains how Finding Thabo works, and how teachers are enjoying using it in the classroom.

Research shows that owning books is a key factor in holistic early development and lifelong academic and economic success: the effect of owning books outweighs a child’s socio-economic status and is equaled only by parents’ level of education.

Our partners at Book Dash are doing their part in closing the illiteracy gap in South Africa. This video showcases the work that they do:

According to LEGO Foundation, play is something every child, everywhere in the world can do. It fuels curiosity, sparks creativity, and inspires a lifelong love of learning. Children who play pick up all kinds of skills to thrive today – and lay the foundations for a happier, healthier life tomorrow.

Our current focus is Early Childhood Development & reaching each South African child via our innovative learning apps.
