The National Department of Agriculture under the lead of Minister John Steenhuisen, and Italy's Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, Francesco Lollobrigida, hosted the South Africa-Italy Agriculture Business Forum this week.

The Business Forum theme: "South Africa and Italy Building Resilient, Value-Added Agri-Business Partnerships: "From the Soil to the Shelf." Cultivating Partnerships. Driving Innovation. Growing Agricultural Trade.

This strategic forum brought together businesses, investors, industry leaders, and stakeholders to unlock new opportunities in agricultural trade, investment, innovation, and sustainable development. The SA Olive Industry Association CEO, Mrs Wendy Petersen, was one of the business leaders invited to join these conversations.

"The engagement between Italy and South Africa is an important
one as both countries are olive producing countries. Collaboration and support in terms of training, research and development, market opportunities and consumer education are important to drive growth of this sector" says Wendy Petersen.

A MOU was signed between South Africa and Italy, marking closer collaboration in Agriculture possible. Key discussions during this week of engagement were around opportunities,
the commitments identified throughout the forum, all aimed at strengthening agricultural trade, investment, innovation, and collaboration between South Africa and Italy.

These outcomes will help shape future partnerships and support sustainable growth across the agricultural value chain.

Climate action starts with the choices we make every day 🌍 On World Environment Day, we recognise the importance of farming in ways that work with the environment, not against it.

Across South Africa's olive-growing regions, producers are embracing sustainable practices - from smarter water use and healthier soils to maintaining biodiversity within and around their groves. SA Olive Industry Association is proud to support an industry committed to growing responsibly.

Small actions, taken consistently, make a lasting impact 🫶🫒

South Africa on the international stage🫒 This week, two of South Africa's most respected olive oil judges head to Tunisia to serve on the international judging panel at the prestigious Carthage IOOC (9-11 June 2026).

Reni Hildenbrand, South African Panel Leader and Benedetta Lami, Tasting Panel Member, have both been selected once again - a proud recognition of the expertise and high standards South Africa brings to the global olive oil industry.

In Reni's words:
"I am deeply honoured to have been selected once again as an international judge for the Carthage Competition in Tunisia. Being among the few representatives from South Africa is a proud recognition of the expertise and high standards that our country brings to the olive oil industry. The competition showcases some of the finest extra virgin olive oils from around the world and provides an outstanding platform for celebrating excellence, quality, and innovation within the global olive oil sector."

And from Benedetta:
"Being on an international judging panel for olive oil awards is always a great honour and a deeply meaningful experience. It means joining a community united by the same passion; it means paying tribute to a product rich in history, heritage, and tradition. It means allowing it to reveal itself, creating a perception that engages all the senses and leaves a lasting memory. And it means discovering olive oils from all over the world."

Safe travels to you both - South Africa is incredibly proud to have you representing us on the world stage🫒
