And... we had a birthday in the team!

A belated happy birthday to Ngcebo Thembela - Ranyaka local coordinator in Umlazi, Durban who celebrated his birthday this past weekend! đŸ€©

Ngcebo, we wish you a fruitful and fulfilling new life year - and on behalf of the marketing team, we commit to a more rehearsed happy birthday song than the random (but 100% heartfelt) attempt that you received during our meeting today 😂 Clearly none of us are here for our singing talent!

Thank you for the energy and commitment you bring to the team, and your dedication to cocreating thriving communities. We know that an exciting year awaits!

Wishing you only the best!

Your Ranyaka family (the ones who can sing, and the ones who cannot. Cake is called for...)

Today marks the start of National Child Protection Week in South Africa.

This year’s theme, “Working together in ending violence against children,” reminds us that protecting children is not the responsibility of one person, one organisation or one sector alone.

At Ranyaka, we believe safer communities are built through connected people, trusted local networks and spaces where children, families and community members are seen, heard and supported.

Every child deserves to grow up safe, valued and protected.

We often talk about the power of a strong network in action.

When people are intentionally connected to the right spaces and opportunities, something begins to move. One introduction, one invitation or one shared space can open the door to learning, growth and new possibilities.

This week, that looked like a group of women from the Klapmuts THRIVE Women’s Club attending an Ezer Connect session on childhood trauma and its long-term effects, presented by AdrĂ© Potgieter.

The ladies arranged their own transport and made sure they were in the room. This group is on the ball! Thank you so much to Ezer Connect for creating meaningful spaces where women can gather, learn and reflect.

The Klapmuts THRIVE Women’s Club was launched earlier this year under the banner of the Nedbank-funded Proud of My Town programme, for which Ranyaka serves as the national implementation agent.

Since its launch, the Klapmuts women have already hosted a holiday programme, led a community clean-up and are already planning their next session to map out their programme for the rest of the year.

We’re inspired by the way this group continues to show up for opportunities to serve the community, as well as to invest in themselves.

{THRIVE Clubs are one of the four pillars of the Ranyaka THRIVE framework. They become vehicles through which community members can empower themselves, connect with others and make a difference in their communities.}

| Trees Connect Continues to Grow |

The Trees Connect Campaign - an environmental initiative under the Nedbank-funded Proud of My Town Programme and implemented by Ranyaka Community Transformation - continues to expand into more communities.

We work alongside residents to create greener spaces, cleaner surroundings, and a stronger environmental future for the next generation.

Yesterday, we kicked off the Katlehong leg of the campaign with an environmental awareness presentation to Grade 8 learners from Fumane Secondary School before heading out to plant 15 trees in collaboration with the City of Ekurhuleni.

The trees were planted in an open space next to the school, which the municipality plans to revitalise into a recreational area for future community activities.

Following the tree planting, the space was fenced off as preparations begin for the development of the site.

A huge thank you to the 25 community volunteers who came through to assist with the planting, as well as the Nedbank representatives who joined us in making the initiative a success.

At the beginning of May, the Midvaal Skills Development Centre (MSDC) hosted an interactive youth engagement session with the Consumer Advisory Panel under the theme: Critical Concerns Experienced by Youth in Telecommunications, Broadcasting and Postal Services.

Young entrepreneurs and aspiring professionals from the communications, printing, media and telecommunications sectors came together to raise questions, share challenges and engage around opportunities within the industry.

The session created an important platform for Midvaal youth voices to be heard, with participants hoping for positive feedback and practical solutions from ICASA on the matters raised.

The event showcases the importance of supporting youth participation in future-focused industries and providing spaces, like the Skills Development Centre, where youth have access to engagement, information and a broader network that unlocks opportunities.

{Ranyaka is an implementation partner for the Midvaal Skills Development Centre, an initiative of the Midvaal Local Municipality. Ranyaka’s Tshidi Mabe is the centre manager, coordinating activities and projects on site. The Centre also serves as an example of what we refer to at Ranyaka as a THRIVE space!}

It was an icy cold Friday in Klapmuts, but that didn’t stop this incredible group from showing up for their community.

Members of the Klapmuts Women’s THRIVE Club recently led a community clean-up adjacent to the Klapmuts Fire Brigade and sports ground.

With 14 dynamic women, 52 enthusiastic children and plenty of determination, the group worked together to collect an incredible 100 bags of trash before warming up with soup and bread at the home of one of the Club members. A local business also donated oranges for the children who braved the cold alongside the adults 🍊

A Nedbank Caps for Wheels collection box was also on site, giving community members the opportunity to donate plastic bottle caps towards a broader recycling initiative that helps support wheelchair and mobility assistance projects. The box has since been placed at the Klapmuts Multipurpose Centre so that local residents can continue contributing long after the clean-up day ended.

Initiatives like these are about so much more than the 100 bags of waste that were collected. They demonstrate what is possible when local residents choose to show up together, participate together, and take ownership of the spaces around them.

The clean-up formed part of the broader THRIVE Club initiative in Klapmuts, where local community members are leading positive change from within their own neighbourhoods.

{THRIVE is the model that underpins the work we do and the movement that mobilises incredible changemakers across South Africa! Thanks to the Nedbank-funded Proud of My Town programme, for which Ranyaka is the official implementation agent, we're able to cocreate thriving, resilient communities with the real heroes on the ground.}

| Trees Connect: Growing Greener Communities, One Town at a Time |

Real change takes root when communities come together. Through the Trees Connect Campaign - an environmental initiative under the Nedbank-funded Proud of My Town Programme, implemented by Ranyaka Community Transformation - communities across South Africa are working together to create greener public spaces, improve air quality, and build healthier environments for future generations.

So far, Trees Connect has successfully planted trees in Mamelodi, Midvaal, and Polokwane, with the campaign continuing to expand. During the month of May, tree planting activities are set to take place in Mangaung, Kathorus, and Thembisa, further growing the campaign’s impact and footprint across communities.

Last week, the Ranyaka team joined hands with Mamelodi Thrive Club members, Nedbank, and the City of Tshwane to plant 30 indigenous trees across key sites in Mamelodi, contributing to greener, healthier community spaces. This forms part of a broader movement to strengthen the connection between people, public spaces, and the natural environment.

A heartfelt thank you to all community members, Thrive Club volunteers, partners, and stakeholders who continue to make this initiative possible. Your support and participation are helping shape cleaner, greener, and more welcoming spaces for all.

This is only the beginning - and we look forward to seeing Trees Connect continue to grow roots across many more communities.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SITHEMBISO!

Today, we celebrate the birthday of our Chief Executive Officer, Sithembiso. But even more than a birthday, we celebrate an incredible human being. S'the, we are blessed to call you our CEO, our colleague, our friend.

If you know S'the, you'll know that despite the title she carries, she typically does not seek out the limelight. Her heart is for people. Her work speaks of a genuine desire to be part of bringing hope to communities that need it most, commitment and the ability to do everything she tackles with excellence.

We love S'the's sense of humour, the random dance moves and song that pop up out of nowhere - quick enough for us to never get to our phones in time to capture it on camera :)

S'the is so much more than an urban planner and a CEO. She is one of those people who makes our world a better place.

Wishing you a blessed day, S'the - and a year brimming with fulfillment and all that brings you much joy! We appreciate you!

What is in our hands?

Earth Day is a reminder that the environments we care for shape the lives we’re able to build.

In our work we do across South Africa under the banner of the Nedbank-funded Proud of My Town programme, we see this every day. When spaces are clean, safe and actively used, they begin to unlock opportunity. When communities take ownership, those spaces start to hold momentum.

At Ranyaka, our focus is on enabling that shift through place-based, people-centred, citizen-led work. This can look like small, practical actions: cleaner streets, maintained public spaces, local hubs that stay active and cared for. Over time, those actions build environments where enterprise, dignity and connection can grow. And when these actions are plugged into an intentional, overarching strategy for a place, the impact is amplified and sustainable.

This Earth Day, we’re reminded that lasting impact is not driven by once-off campaigns, but by consistent stewardship of the places we share.
