🌿✨ A Weekend of Memories, Growth & New Friendships! ✨🌿

From 21–23 August 2026, Usiko had the privilege of taking 20 amazing learners from Melton Primary School on an unforgettable camp! πŸ•οΈπŸ’š

This camp was extra special as it was our very first time working with Melton Primary School, and what a beautiful beginning it was! 🌟

Throughout the weekend, the learners stepped outside of their comfort zones, built their confidence, shared their stories and experiences, and created moments filled with laughter, happiness and connection. ❀️

They supported one another, learned more about themselves and each other, and formed friendships that we hope will last a lifetime. 🀝✨

From the little moments to the big adventures, so many memories were made that will be carried with them long after the camp is over.

A special thank you to the Department of Social Development for making this camp possible and for supporting opportunities that allow young people to grow, connect and create meaningful memories. πŸ’š

International Recognition for Local Impact

When young people are given the opportunity to discover their potential, incredible things happen.
We are honoured to have our work featured in the International Astronomical Union Office of Astronomy for Development's Annual Report, highlighting the impact of Usiko's partnership with the IAU OAD and the incredible journey of one of our participants, Dandre Swanepoel.

After attending a Usiko camp, Dandre discovered a confidence she never knew she had. Today, she has completed her Higher Certificate in Emergency Care and is pursuing further studies in Emergency Medical Care.

The report also celebrates the success of the Usiko Astronomy Club, where young people explored the wonders of the universe while developing critical thinking, communication skills, confidence and curiosity. By combining astronomy with mentorship and experiential learning, learners discovered that the sky is not the limit, it is only the beginning.

We are equally proud that our Fundraiser, Wilma De Souza, contributed to a global discussion at the Science Forum South Africa on how science and innovation can help shape more inclusive and resilient societies.

Thank you to the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development for recognising the power of investing in young people, and to every partner who continues to believe in the potential of the next generation.

What an unforgettable evening.

As we celebrate 25 Years of Usiko Stellenbosch, we had the privilege of gathering around the table with incredible people who share a passion for investing in the future of our young people.

From meaningful conversations and new connections to heartfelt Stories of Hope, every moment reminded us that lasting change happens when a community comes together with purpose.

A heartfelt thank you to Bertus Basson and Mareli Basson, and the wonderful team at Toevlug Restaurant, for opening your doors and your hearts to us. Your generosity, exceptional hospitality, incredible food and beautiful setting made the evening truly unforgettable.

There are some children who know what it feels like to go to bed hungry.

Children who have learnt to stay silent because no one has ever really listened.

Children who have already experienced more loss, violence and rejection than many adults will in a lifetime.

And then...

They arrive at Usiko.

For generations, people have gathered beneath baobab trees to listen, learn, reflect and grow.
In the first week of July, in partnership with ClemenGold Foundation, Usiko facilited another Ignite Youth Camp where a new generation added their stories.

Around the fire, beneath ancient branches that have weathered countless seasons, young people found courage to speak, to listen deeply, to challenge themselves and to discover that they belong.

At Usiko, we believe transformation happens in spaces like these. not because of the tree, but because of the conversations, the community and the courage shared beneath it.

✨ Learning through experience! ✨

On Saturday, 13 June 2026, our Cloetesville Primary School group enjoyed an exciting visit to the Museum of Illusions in Cape Town. Learners explored interactive exhibits, challenged their minds, and had lots of fun while learning something new.

Afterwards, we headed to Signal Hill, where the learners enjoyed lunch while taking in the beautiful views of Cape Town. It was a day filled with learning, fun, and memorable experiences beyond the classroom.

As the facilitator of Usiko's Head, Heart & Soul programme, Brendyn has spent years walking alongside boys and men as they navigate identity, belonging, loss, healing and purpose.

In our conversation with him, one message stood out above all others:

Many of the young men who come through our programme carry deep wounds – often linked to father absence, loneliness, trauma, shame and the pressure to "be strong" while suffering in silence.

Yet time and again we witness the power of community, vulnerability and brotherhood. We see young men finding their voice, rediscovering hope and choosing a different future for themselves.

One participant, previously involved in gangs and selling drugs, experienced a profound turning point through the programme. Today he is employed, rebuilding his life and inspiring others through his journey.

This Men's Health Month, let's challenge the idea that strength means carrying everything alone.

We are inviting men for our community-based mentoring programme to be trained as mentors we give preference to men from Ashton in the Langeberg region, Strand in the Helderberg region, and Jamestown, Kayamandi and Stellenbosch in the Cape Winelands region, Ocean View, Hout Bay, Masiphumelele in the Deep South - our programme is community-based and localised so it works best to invite men from specific communities where we have a footprint.

You are warmly invited to attend the Usiko Mentoring Workshop, an opportunity to explore the role of mentoring within our Head, Heart & Soul Journey Programme.

This workshop is designed for men who are interested in supporting and guiding young people through their personal growth and development journeys. It will provide insight into the principles of mentoring, the impact mentors can have, and the commitment required to walk alongside young men as they navigate life's challenges and opportunities.

On Saturday, 6 June, the Phase 1 (Grade 9) boys of Stellenzicht Secondary School enjoyed an unforgettable excursion around the beautiful Cape Peninsula.

For many of the boys, it was their first opportunity to experience this iconic part of the Western Cape, taking in the breathtaking scenery, coastal views, and landmarks that make our region so special. The day was filled with discovery, learning, laughter, and lasting memories.

Experiences like these remind us of the value of learning beyond the classroom and the importance of creating opportunities that broaden our learners’ horizons.

A wonderful day was had by all, and we are grateful for the chance to share such meaningful experiences with our learners.
