For years, the value of cattle hides was often overlooked by communities living in the buffer zone of Maputo National Park (Parque Nacional de Maputo). Today, that is changing. Cattle hides are being turned into marketable products such as ranger boots, belts and hats, creating additional income opportunities for households.

The ranger boots are a powerful example of how value can be unlocked from resources that already exist within livestock farming communities.

Beyond the boots lies a bigger story. Through Herding for Health, communities are improving how cattle graze and helping grazing lands recover. Healthier landscapes support wildlife, strengthen biodiversity, build resilience to future environmental pressures and create new opportunities for local families.

This work is implemented through Mozambique's National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC / Administraรงรฃo Nacional das รreas de Conservaรงรฃo) and Herding for Health, a partnership between Conservation International, Africa Field Division and Peace Parks Foundation.

With rangelands high on the agenda at UNCCD COP17 Mongolia and its theme of "Restoring Land. Restoring Hope.", this story shows what restoration can look like on the ground.

Effective protected area management depends on well-supported rangers and the systems that enable them to do their work.

Across Southern Africa, governments and protected area authorities rely on rangers to protect wildlife, support communities and respond to growing pressures across vast and often remote landscapes. They need strong leadership, professional support, reliable communications, appropriate technology and effective operational systems.

Conservation practitioners, ranger organisations and technology specialists recently combined their expertise to help shape two complementary initiatives: Ranger360 and Tech4Nature.

Ranger360 focuses on people. It is designed to strengthen ranger leadership, wellbeing, professional standards and operational readiness.

Tech4Nature focuses on systems. It aims to improve connectivity, communications and digital tools that help protected area teams make informed decisions and respond more effectively.

Participants shared practical experience, tested the thinking behind both initiatives and identified gaps that need to be addressed as the programmes are developed.

We thank Conservation Synergies, Connected Conservation Foundation, EarthRanger, Endangered Wildlife Trust, Alinea Network, Southern African Wildlife College, Off-Grid Consulting, the Game Rangers Association of Africa, independent Conservation Planning Specialist Group facilitators Lauren Waller and Lucy Kemp, and the Peace Parks team for their contributions.

By strengthening both the people on the frontline and the systems around them, Ranger360 and Tech4Nature aim to support more effective, professional and resilient protected area management across Southern Africa.

Rangers at Parque Nacional de Banhine - Banhine National Park, Mozambique, now have access to improved accommodation with electricity, secure storage and running water.

Led by Mozambique's National Administration for Conservation (Administraรงรฃo Nacional das รreas de Conservaรงรฃo), and supported by the Comon Foundation and Peace Parks Foundation, the new housing forms part of wider efforts to strengthen the park's capacity and support its continued development.

This forms part of a broader effort to strengthen the park's management and support its long-term recovery, including:

โ€ข 385 animals reintroduced in 2025
โ€ข Development of a new wildlife sanctuary and supporting infrastructure
โ€ข Continued investment in park operations

As part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area, Banhine plays an important role in reconnecting ecosystems and supporting biodiversity.

For the first time since Banhine was proclaimed more than 50 years ago, conservation revenue is reaching local communities, marking an important milestone for more inclusive conservation.

Together, these achievements reflect the steady progress being made across the park.

An important perspective from Mozambiqueโ€™s National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC / Administraรงรฃo Nacional das รreas de Conservaรงรฃo) on the investment needed for the effective management of protected areas.

Sustained investment in people, infrastructure, wildlife management, community development and tourism is essential to protect biodiversity, support livelihoods and create lasting economic opportunity.

We value our longstanding partnership with ANAC and the Government of Mozambique and remain committed to supporting the country's protected areas.

Mozambique needs up to US$4 million a year for each conservation area, says ANAC
