Play is serious business!

Our Head of Training & Development and Ubuntu Champions joined the excitement at the Penreach Play Day today - perfectly timed with International Day of Play!

There’s nothing more powerful than seeing children learn, grow, and thrive through joyful, purposeful play. Today reminds us that play is not a luxury, it’s essential for healthy development and strong foundations in early childhood.

Huge thanks to the Penreach team for creating such a meaningful space for children, families, and ECD practitioners. Proud to stand alongside partners who champion play as a fundamental right for every child.

Keep them safe first!
When one thinks of early childhood development, it might only be about learning different skills. But one of the important modules that we teach (and recently did as part of the Malawi arm of our Green Growth Girls training programme), focuses on safeguarding children.

We guide caregivers and teachers in how to spot early warning signs of abuse, how to teach children the difference between secrets and surprises, and how to establish safety networks for the children and for them to know their rights.

The Green Growth Girls training programme is supported by GIZ through the Employment Promotion for Women for the Green Transformation in Africa – WE4D Programme commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ); Co-funded by the European Union through regional and bilateral Team Europe Initiatives (TEIs) and Norway.

When you're working in a charitable environment, spreading the word of what you do is so important. We recently hit the jackpot when we had the opportunity to be a guest on kykNet's Groot Ontbyt. After the nerves, came the reminder that we're doing good and that we can, with great confidence, ask people to support out work.

Today, we are reminded that play is so much more than fun - it is how children learn, grow, explore, build confidence, and develop important social and emotional skills.

At the ClemenGold Foundation, we believe every child deserves opportunities to play in safe, stimulating, and joyful environments. Through our support of Early Childhood Development centres and community initiatives, we continue working towards creating spaces where children can learn through play every single day.

The ClemenGold Foundation acts as a catalyst in some of South Africa's deepest rural communities, creating opportunities, potentiating change and co-creating a better future for those living there. One of the programmes that fulfil this mandate is Green Growth Girls. With support from GIZ South Africa, Lesotho & eSwatini through the Employment Promotion for Women for the Green Transformation in Africa – WE4D programme, we equip women with sustainable agriculture skills, improving their employability, increases their income potential and overall resilience.

Our training partner Hoedspruit Hub has just kicked off the first round of training sessions with unemployed women and youth in the Hoedspruit area. The course material includes topics such as functional agricultural numeracy, soft skills and a range of agricultural and environment-related modules.

A big step forward for the ECD centres in our programme!

Thanks to our valued partnership with 𝗚𝗜𝗭 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮, 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘀𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗶 through the Employment Promotion for Women for the Green Transformation in Africa – WE4D Programme, we were able to purchase new outdoor play equipment from Kids Collab, creating exciting spaces where our little ones can learn, explore, and grow through play.

Outdoor play is about so much more than just having fun. It helps children develop important social skills as they learn to share, communicate, and work together positively with others. It also supports gross motor development by encouraging movement, balance, coordination, and confidence – all important building blocks for healthy development and future learning.

As highlighted by UNICEF, outdoor play also encourages creativity, problem-solving, independence, and emotional well-being, while helping children build a healthy connection with the world around them. 🌱💛

Ubuntu Champions in Action

Our Ubuntu Champions (UC’s) are hard at work alongside our creches, turning everyday recycled items into tools for learning and play.

Cardboard boxes, containers, and offcuts become building blocks, fantasy kitchen sets, and sandpit toys. These hands-on creations unlock creativity while making the most of available resources.

Four days.
28 young people.
One unforgettable journey of growth.

The Ignite Youth Camp in Hoedspruit created space for young people to step into courage, discover their strengths, and reflect on who they are becoming. What began with fear turned into courage… shyness into confidence… and uncertainty into clarity.

Through team challenges, career guidance and deep reflection circles, the camp helped participants find their voice, set goals, and realise they are not alone in their struggles or their dreams.

They left with a deeper sense of belonging - proof once again of what happens when young people are given space to be seen, heard, and supported.

Huge thanks to our incredible facilitation team and every young person who showed up ready to grow.
