Thanks to everyone who completed a submission in response to the DSR for the proposed Nuclear Power Plant at Thyspunt. There was a huge amount of support from the local community and now we need to wait while the consultants go through all of the submissions. If things go quiet, it doesn't mean that it is over, this is just the start of the process and we will be keeping you updated on progress.

Why is the Black Harrier so Threatened?

The Black Harrier faces many pressures.

It nests on the ground, which makes breeding sites especially vulnerable to disturbance. Large areas of natural fynbos and renosterveld have been transformed for agriculture, leaving limited habitat. Other threats include poisoning from agrochemicals and pesticides, as well as poorly placed powerlines and wind turbines.

Understanding the threats is the first step towards protecting the species.

Eco-Kids met on the 30th May for a Musical Breakfast. The group learnt about seeds and beans, baked healthy muffins, made instruments using seeds and planted some to grow at home.

Our thanks to Pig & Rooster for hosting us.

Raptors play a vital role in maintaining balance in our natural environment.

The Black Harrier helps control rodent and small mammal populations, making it an important part of a healthy ecosystem. By conserving the Black Harrier, we are also protecting the biodiversity and ecological balance of the Greater Kromme landscape.

When we protect predators, we protect the whole system.

Did you know that the Black Harrier faces a greater risk of extinction than even the Black Rhino?

This powerful fact reminds us just how urgent conservation action has become. Every sighting, every protected habitat, and every landowner who supports stewardship plays a role in giving this endangered bird a better chance of survival.

Can you help save the Black Harrier?

The boys of St Francis Soccer Club enjoyed a fantastic and educational visit to the Port recently.

The day began with a guided tour led by Mr Ant Sherren, who shared valuable insights into the fishing industry that plays such an important role in supporting our town and community.

The boys were also generously hosted by Garth Shamley at the NSRI station, where they learned more about the vital work carried out by this dedicated organisation.

To round off a memorable day, PJ of the Ski Boat Club treated everyone to a delicious meal of calamari and chips at his restaurant – a much-appreciated highlight for the hungry youngsters!

A sincere thank you to our wonderful hosts for their time, generosity, and hospitality, and to SPAR for their continued support in helping make opportunities like this possible.

The Black Harrier is one of Southern Africa’s rarest and most threatened birds of prey — and it needs our protection.

Over the next few posts, Greater Kromme Stewardship will be sharing more about this remarkable species, the threats it faces, and how landowners and communities can help secure its future.

The Black Harrier is found gliding low over fynbos and renosterveld, depending on healthy natural landscapes to survive. Protecting these spaces is not only about conserving one species; it is about safeguarding the ecosystems that support many others too.

Our land. Our responsibility.
