Today, the South African Arts Creatives Network (SAACN) family joins the nation in celebrating the incredible Sister Phumi (Phumi Maduna)!

From her early beginnings in Orlando East, Soweto, Sister Phumi has been a foundational pillar of South African music heritage. Her dazzling career kicked off in the iconic theatre productions of Sam Mhangwana and Gibson Kente, where she shared early stages alongside her close friend, the late Brenda Fassie. She captured the country's heart as one-half of the hit-making pop duo Cheek to Cheek in the 1980s.

Her musical path took a historic turn when she joined the legendary Lucky Dube as a backing vocalist. Stepping out as a pioneer, she broke barriers to become the first South African woman to release a solo reggae album with her groundbreaking 1991 release, Substitute.

As a dynamic singer, songwriter, and global touring artist, Sister Phumi continues to inspire generations of artists within our creative community.
