Facilitators Diary:
Found myself in a library today and I honestly really questioned the relevance in today's digital world...
Yes. Libraries remain highly relevant in today's digital world, but their role has evolved. They are no longer just places to borrow books; they can become community learning hubs that provide access to knowledge, technology, mentorship, and safe spaces for young people. A revitalised library system could have a significant positive impact on both our youth and society. Libraries offer children a secure and supervised place to spend their time, reducing idle time and the likelihood of loitering, substance abuse, or involvement in risky behaviour. This naturally improves their vocabulary, communication skills, and confidence in expressing themselves. Modern libraries provide access to computers, internet connectivity, online learning resources, and digital literacy programmes for children who may not have these resources at home.Youth development: Libraries can host homework clubs, career guidance sessions, coding workshops, entrepreneurship programmes, debate clubs, arts activities, and mentorship initiatives that nurture future leaders. A library that remains open during school holidays and provides activities such as reading challenges, storytelling sessions, creative writing, chess, coding, arts and crafts, and educational games gives young people meaningful ways to spend their time. While libraries alone cannot eliminate loitering, they can become an important part of a broader community strategy to keep children engaged, stimulated, and safe. By partnering with schools, local businesses, NGOs, and community volunteers, libraries can offer after-school support, holiday programmes, skills development, and digital learning opportunities that empower youth. A child who develops a love for reading today is far more likely to become an informed, skilled, and empowered adult tomorrow.
