Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Kliptown is more than just a landmark it is a place where South Africa’s democratic history was shaped.

Formerly known as Freedom Square Kliptown, the site was renamed Walter Sisulu Square Of Dedication in 2002, in honour of liberation struggle stalwart Walter Sisulu, who was himself a delegate at the historic 1955 Congress of the People.

In 2024, Walter Sisulu Square Kliptown became part of a UNESCO World Heritage property, the Human Rights, Liberation and Reconciliation: Nelson Mandela Legacy Sites,which consists of 14 sites across South Africa connected to the country’s struggle for human rights, liberation and reconciliation.

Here are some facts you may not know:

• The Congress of the People took place here on 25–26 June 1955.

• Around 3,000 delegates gathered in Kliptown to consider and adopt the Freedom Charter.

• The gathering brought together people from different racial and political communities, making it one of the most significant multiracial political gatherings in South African history.

• The Square's 10 pillars represent the 10 articles of the Freedom Charter.

• The central monument incorporates the Freedom Charter, while the Square's design uses architecture and public art to commemorate the historic gathering.

• The modern Walter Sisulu Square was officially opened in 2005, marking the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Charter.

And right within this historic precinct is the Soweto Hotel & Conference Centre, a four-star boutique hotel which was opened in 2007 as Holiday Inn Soweto Freedom Square and renamed in 2009 to Soweto Hotel and Conference Centre with offerings:

Soweto is home to the Centre for Neurodiversity@uj based at the University Of Johannesburg Soweto under the Faculty of Education and Department of Educational Psychology.

Here’s an interesting fact:

The Centre was officially launched on 9 September 2022, making it the first Centre for Neurodiversity at a South African public higher education institution. It was established through a collaboration between the University of Johannesburg, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the European Union.

Another interesting fact is that the Centre is one of three Centres of Excellence and National Hubs in South Africa funded through the DHET and EU initiative, alongside specialised centres at Wits University and the University of Pretoria.

The Centre was created to address the neurodevelopmental learning needs of children and youth, particularly in underserved communities, while promoting greater awareness and understanding of neurodiversity.

Today, the Centre supports neurodiverse individuals, families, educators and communities through services and programmes including:

• Neurodiversity awareness and advocacy
• Learning support
• Psychoeducational assessments
• Training for teachers and other stakeholders
• Family support and development
• Career transitioning
• Therapeutic and educational interventions
• Community engagement and support

From research and assessments to family support, advocacy and community engagement, the Centre is helping create a more inclusive society right here in the heart of Soweto.

Tourism Safety Intervention | Continuing the Conversation

One of the key concerns raised during today's Tourism Safety Intervention was the safety and security of both international tourists and local visitors.

A safe tourism destination benefits everyone. It encourages more visitors to explore our communities, supports local businesses, creates employment opportunities, and strengthens confidence in Soweto and the greater Johannesburg region.

The discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration between tourism stakeholders, law enforcement agencies, businesses, and community members to develop practical solutions that enhance safety across our tourism precincts.

Together, we can create a destination where every visitor feels welcome, safe, and inspired to return.

Today, Soweto Tourism joins key stakeholders at the Tourism Safety Intervention Joburg Region hosted by the Gauteng Tourism Authority at Sakhumzi Restaurant, Phhefeni.

The session brings together government, law enforcement, tourism businesses, and community leaders to discuss practical solutions that enhance visitor safety, strengthen collaboration, and ensure Johannesburg remains a safe and welcoming destination for both local and international tourists.

Together, we are building a safer, stronger, and more resilient tourism sector.
