These were some of the key takeaways from the News24 5 Million Jobs in 10 Years Summit. The conversations were bold. The ideas were ambitious.
But we couldn’t ignore what was missing.

Disability was not centered.

Not in the solutions.
Not in the urgency.
Not in the vision.
And that matters.

Because you cannot solve unemployment while excluding an entire community.

Inclusion is not a side note. It is the work.

Today, we marked Human Rights Day in South Africa 🇿🇦

A day rooted in the legacy of the Sharpeville Massacre a painful reminder of what happens when dignity is denied.

But today is not just about remembrance.
It is about reckoning.

Disabled people are still fighting for access, for dignity, for inclusion for the basic recognition that our lives matter.

Disability rights are not special rights.
They are human rights.

And until our systems, spaces, and policies reflect that truth, the work continues.

✊🏽 We are here.
✊🏽 We are leading.
✊🏽 We are disabling norms.

Our Power Is Disabled No More.

Enabled Enlightenment stands in fierce solidarity with women, girls, and gender-diverse persons especially those with disabilities in the fight to end gender-based violence.

On Friday, 21 November 2025, we join women across South Africa as we withdraw our power from workplaces, classrooms, homes, and care spaces to expose the violence, exclusion, and silence that society has normalized.

For women with disabilities, GBV is not only physical it’s systemic. It’s in the inaccessible shelters, the disbelief of our stories, the policies that overlook our pain, and the care systems that fail us.

Until South Africa stops burying a woman every 2.5 hours many of them disabled, poor, and unheard the G20 cannot speak of progress or justice.

We echo the call to declare Gender-Based Violence and Femicide a National Disaster not in the next 16 Days of Activism, but now.

Disabled women are not invisible. Our silence ends here.

Withdraw your power. Speak out.

The South African Reality

In South Africa, access to healthcare is a constitutional right but for many people with disabilities, it’s still out of reach.

Across the country, disabled people face:
Clinics without ramps or interpreters
Healthcare workers who overlook or dismiss symptoms
Harmful stereotypes about our sexuality and fertility
A system not designed for our bodies or our realities

The result? Missed diagnoses. Unplanned pregnancies. Silence. Shame. Avoidable trauma.

The Inclusive Health Project exists to change this by exposing these gaps and advocating for healthcare that is inclusive, respectful, and affirming for everybody.

Because rights on paper mean nothing if they’re not felt in our lives.

The Inclusive Health Project Matters because Sexual and reproductive health isn’t just about choice it’s about dignity, autonomy, and access.

Yet, for many people with disabilities, these rights are routinely denied. From missed diagnoses and inaccessible clinics to harmful stereotypes that desexualize or infantilize disabled bodies the system often excludes us before we even step through the door.

The Inclusive Health Project is changing that.
We’re amplifying disabled voices, collecting data, and driving conversations that center our experiences in sexual and reproductive health (SRH).

Because we all deserve:
Quality healthcare.
Bodily autonomy.
Respect and inclusion.

Health justice is reproductive justice.
And inclusive health is the bridge between the two.

After a year of deep reflection and strategic groundwork, Enabled Enlightenment is making a triumphant return stronger, louder, and more committed than ever to our core mission of advocacy and empowerment.

This October, we are centering our efforts on the crucial themes of disability, health, and justice. We firmly believe that access to healthcare, mental wellness support, and the inherent dignity of all individuals are fundamental rights, not exclusive privileges reserved for a few.

Join us in our commitment to dismantling harmful societal norms that marginalize those with disabilities. Together, we can create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Let’s work hand in hand to challenge the status quo and foster a more inclusive society for all.

Are you aware of the experiences of the deaf community?

South Africa has 234,000 Deaf people using South African Sign Language (SASL) as their first language (SASL National Council). Yet, many face communication barriers. You can help!
