We had a powerful presentation on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), followed by a discussion on the possible factors that contribute to GBV. Different teams presented and shared their insights, creating a meaningful and engaging dialogue.
From a broader perspective, GBV (Gender-Based Violence):
Is any form of violence or abuse directed at someone because of their gender, gender identity, or perceived role in society.
Includes physical, emotional, sexual, financial, and psychological abuse, as well as controlling behavior.
Often happens in close relationships (partners, family members), but can also occur in schools, workplaces and communities.
Is strongly linked to power imbalances, patriarchy, harmful gender norms, poverty, substance abuse, unemployment, stress, jealousy, and unresolved trauma.
Affects everyone, but women, children, LGBTQIA+ persons and people with disabilities are often the most vulnerable.
Has serious effects on mental health, physical health, children’s development, community safety, and the economy.
Requires collective action: awareness, reporting abuse, supporting survivors, challenging harmful behaviors and attitudes, and working with community structures, leaders and organizations.
By holding these discussions and giving different teams a chance to present, we are helping to break the silence, promote respectful relationships, and encourage a zero-tolerance stance on violence in our communities.
