We were delighted to have a Fedusa financial education workshop in Bloemfontein where we covered topics such as the Two Pot Retirement System, Section 37C Death and Unclaimed Benefits.

We've wrapped up two days of organised labour and trustees workshops in Gqeberha, helping strengthen retirement fund knowledge across the sector.

Day 1 was with FEDUSA organised labour, covering retirement fund member access during employment, the two-pot system, section 37C death benefits and unclaimed benefits, and data integrity.

Day 2 brought together trustees from various retirement funds for a session on private markets.

Both sessions formed part of Money Smart Week South Africa, with the support of Sanlam Foundation and Alternative Prosperity.

Today in Gqeberha, we ran a FEDUSA Organised Labour workshop, and the room was filled entirely with women - a fitting way to close off Women's Month.

Many people assume death benefits are distributed according to a will. In reality, trustees have specific responsibilities under Section 37C of the Pension Funds Act when determining how benefits are allocated. Complex topics such as Section 37C have a direct impact on members and their beneficiaries, yet they are often poorly understood.

This is one of the reasons Atleha-edu continues to prioritise financial education on retirement fund governance for organised labour representatives. When trustees, shop stewards, and worker representatives better understand the process, they are better positioned to support members and their families during difficult times. By making these topics accessible and practical, we help organised labour representatives build the confidence and knowledge needed to engage meaningfully on behalf of members.

As one Ceppwawu union official reflected following the training: “This aspect of the workshop context (Section 37) was discussed in layman’s terms…the way it was delivered on these days was such that one can confidently discuss the matter confidently with others. What stood out was the understanding of the audience by the facilitators which made learning fun whilst entrenching the knowledge."

Our financial education session at iHub Africa focused on building practical financial skills for young professionals entering the world of work.
